Shoes & Lunch

My cousin's coming to Toronto to go to the Bata Shoe Museum with me next Saturday. We'd like to have lunch before we check out the shoes of antiquity. Can any recommend a good and inexpensive place for us to have lunch in the Bloor & St. George area?

I want to take a walk up the street and find a place like the YMCA.

I've been thinking of joining a gym for the first time in my life, primarily because I live alone and work from home and it would be good for me to have a place to go to be around other people once a day. So, I am looking for a gym to join. I just checked out the one nearest me tonight but was discouraged by the fact that the facilities seemed dirty and smelly and crowded. Buffed Toronto Mefites, what gyms can you recommend for someone who lives in west end Toronto (between Lansdowne and Dundas West subway stations), and wants a convenient, clean, and inexpensive gym to join? I'd like to do weights and the occasional exercise class in whatever (pilates, yoga, or kickboxing are all fine). I'd love to be able to swim too, but realize that isn't compatible with inexpensive.

If there's a furnace old in your home sweet home, who you gonna call?

It's fall and I should have my furnace serviced. It's a 1991 furnace that has kept chugging along just fine so far (touch wood) but that I hope to be replacing in 2013, so I don't want to pay for more than a basic servicing/cleaning job now. I live in Toronto. Does anyone have recommendations as to whom I should hire for the job?

Mirror, mirror on the table, your scratches make your reflections a little unstable

From things that bump and grind in the night, may the good RMT deliver me

I grind my teeth in my sleep. A friend of mine who is an Registered Massage Therapist ("RMT") tells me that even though I have a night guard I'll destroy the discs in my jaw by grinding, that the fact that my jaw clicks when it opens and shuts is VERY BAD, and that I need to get to an RMT pronto. The dentists at the clinic I go to claim they've never heard of massage as a cure for grinding. So I have two questions: is my RMT friend right, and if so, can you recommend a Toronto-area (preferably central or west-end) RMT who has specialized training in TMJ issues?

Recommendations for Toronto home and garden workers?

Looking for recommendations for Toronto-area tree service (to severely prune back an old maple tree), and handy people who can replace my front door and attic/rooftop terrace door (some frame repair and possibly brickwork involved). I’ve gotten one estimate each for all three jobs, but they seem a little high (i.e., Home Depot wants $2300 to replace my front door alone) so it seems prudent to take some more bids. Can any Torontonians recommend reliable workers/companies with reasonable rates for these jobs?

Separating the men from the boys' bikes on Queen St. W.

For approximately the last ten years, whenever I have been down on Toronto's Queen Street West, I notice a number of very young men (age 18 to 21 give or take) riding boys' bicycles, sometimes with the seat jacked way up, but just as often not. Is there some reason why these young men are riding bicycles more suitably sized for a ten-year-old? I mean, any practical reason other than it being some sort of "Queen St. thing" and a trend? Perhaps such bicyles are cheaper, or easier to store, or there's some advantage when one is riding them? Or they've had some kind of freakish overnight growth spurt and just haven't got around to replacing their bikes?

Help me find a good venue for a class reunion

I'm going to be organizing a pub night for my class from the grade school I went to at some point — probably in September or October. The best location for the pub is probably in the north end of Toronto, say on Steeles or Finch somewhere, and not too far east or west. Not being very familiar with that area, I'd like suggestions as to a good venue. I'd like a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, decent food, and definitely nothing dive-y or too bar-like.

Where can I find a good used piano in Toronto?

Where in Toronto can I find a good secondhand upright piano? My question would have been more complex, but I got the rest of the advice I needed from this great thread, so don't feel obligated to advise me on how to appraise one, move it, or to tune it after I get it home, etc.

Wool ewe help me find some good places to buy yarn?

Knitters and crocheters of MeFi, which are the best Toronto-area yarn shops? I know about Romni Wools at Queen and Bathurst — what other stores should I check out? Alternatively, if you buy yarn online, where do you buy it (and are you really okay with not being able to feel up the yarn and ascertain the colour)?

Insurance! Water! Heat! Lights! Action!

After a last minute sale of my condo, the deal on the house I bought closes on Thursday. I need to arrange for utilities, insurance, and some repairs, and have next-to-no time to do research. And of course I'll think of you all when I'm doing my happy dance on my rooftop terrace;-) [more inside]

Portrait of the editrix as a young woman

I'd like to have a nice formal picture of me for inclusion in my Christmas cards. Can anyone recommend a good Toronto-area photographer? "Good" in this instance means both "technically skilled if not possessed of wizard-like abilities" and "charges reasonable prices" as I am a) vain, b) plain, and c) cheap. Email me with contact info if you don't care to share the person's identity with the world. Thanks!

Early Date Advice

Beyond renting videos, long walks on the beach, and hot pig sex... What are your favourite things to do on a date? I'd like some creative suggestions for fun, date-appropriate activities, especially ideas that are low-budget or free, and geared to the early stages when one (or two) hasn't quite gotten to the hot pig sex yet. Toronto-centric ideas will be most welcome, since that's where I am.

Volunteer organizations and causes

I want to start doing some volunteer work. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to organizations or causes?
