So my friend has some sort of overdeveloped magpie region of her brain and loves sparkly shiny clothing (think sequins, covered in glitter). Where can I find something extra special for christmas for her? Skirts, tops, dresses - hell, even pyjamas or accessories. I would love your ideas of where to purchase such sparkly items. UK-based is very preferable. Budget of £50 but preferably a bit cheaper. Thank you all in advance!

[Alt-health filter]: what are your top 10, most important, almost scientific (ie. generally accepted) foods and/or supplements that I should focus on to improve my health? Speaking from a general well-being, alternative health-type of point of view? I don't mean 'vegetables' but very specific stuff like "linseed oil is the very best thing in the world" and "resveratrol kept me alive for 200 years" etc. I'm not an alt-health fanatic but I know there's something there, sometimes, and I'd like to know what you think are the most important, and widely accepted.

"Avoid aspertame" would be a good example. But I can't determine which other stuff is as generally accepted as bad, or good, for you as aspertame. And honestly, I don't think I have time to eat all the things that I'm supposed to be consuming if I was to take everything I read on this seriously ("just 5mg of ... a day..." and "just 10ml of ... in the morning will..." multiplied by 50 just doesn't work).

What are your top 5 Android Apps? So, I decided to buck the trend a buy an Android device (HTC Magic).

With Metafilter being v. iPhone-centric I thought I'd bring something different to the table.

Loss prevention in a convertible with soft top - Lock the doors, or leave them unlocked? I recently heard an interesting loss prevention technique for convertible owners. Lock anything of any value away in a secure location within the car, and leave the doors unlocked. That way, a thief won't slash your $500 top to get into your car and realize there's nothing there. Just leave the doors open, and they'll look inside, realize there's nothing to be stolen, and take off.

Does this sound like a reasonable course of action to you guys?

Where can I find a comprehensive list of music featured on episodes of BBC's Top Gear? Clarification: I know that you can purchase CD's which are "approved" by Top Gear, i.e. Top Gear Top Anthems etc. However, I usually find myself watching Top Gear and thinking that I love the music that they feature during the show (during the car reviews and challenge bits) but I can never remember the names of the songs so I can download them later.

Is there any place where I can find a list of the music featured in every episode in the similar way that a feature film lists all the music in the end credits? I can't view the credits at the end of episodes because BBC America usually cuts them off.

Recently I saw an unusual bike, one with a curved top tube that extended beyond the seat tube to support a rack. It had trekking bars, too. Please help me identify it! I was going downhill opposite its rider, so I didn't want to stop and ask. Lemon yellow frame, which seemed mostly pretty normal--I think the down tube and seat tube were both straight, what looked like normal seatstays and chainstays. But that curved top tube extended maybe a foot and a half behind the seat tube, almost as if it were a fender, and it had a rack mounted on it. My google-fu has failed; please help! If you know of a similar bike, please link to a photo so I can figure out if it's what I saw.

Where online can I find a decent quality top hat and monocle, barring Ebay? Budget for both is around 60$ CDN pre-shipping. All I'm looking for is your standard top hat, British-gentleman-style, preferably "silky" looking rather than velvet or anything along those lines. Black.

I'm really not picky with regards to the monocle - I imagine a gold rim with chain and maybe a nose support thing (optional). These will be pseudo costume pieces, so it's not like they have to be top notch quality, but I would prefer they not be cheap plastic and cardboard items.

I've been searching through Froogle so far, mostly, and the relevancy (and sketchiness) of the results tend to vary a lot. Thanks in advance!

Help me get rid of my love handles My weight is fine. I'm at or even below my goal weight. But I have a definite roll around the middle. It's just where my body stores fat. And when I lose weight it comes off my butt where I would rather have it.
Anyway! Need ideas for exercises to help target this. Especially the back side of my waist.

Would also be willing to make some diet changes but like I said, I don't want to lose more weight unless it's gonna come off the right places.

I have a year before I am eligible to work for a big consulting company. What should I do during this year to maximise my chances of success, or bump up starting salary? I have only one subject (capstone thesis, no classes) to do next year, however big companies don't accept applicants who have not graduated. And graduate positions start only at the beginning of each year. With only one subject to do in 2008, I have a lot time.

Over a year of object-oriented coding
Over a year of mobile phones sales
Degree: BE Software, BA Int'l Studies in Chinese (6yr course)
Avg grades: ~73/100
Activities: Some involvement with clubs and volunteer programs, nothing outstanding or demonstrating leadership, debating skills or care for the greater community
Country: Australia
Willing to relocate to: UK, US, NZ, Asia
Companies of interest:
Particularly Bain and BCG for their reputation in culture and work/life balance

I've considered getting a full-time job geared towards it, like IT sales or business analyst. Also maybe being more active with uni activities. Just not sure what directions would maximise return. Any advice in any area is welcome.

Convertible Top Repair

Convertible Top Repair: Possible? My '01 Miata sat for a year while I was in China. Pulling the top down the first time led to a bunch of small holes above the rear window. Over the past month, it's become a straight up tear. It'll likely get bigger. On the inside, there's still cloth between the rip and window. Outside, it's right above the rubber lining to the rear window. The top is vinyl.

I'm selling. It looks horrible. A new top is ~$1000 installed and shops don't want to patch it up beyong pouring silicone glue on in, which doesn't last when the top comes down.

What can be done to save the top for another six months to a year and let me sell my otherwise flawless car for what it's worth?

Is there a set-top box that performs the opposite of a Slingbox? I have a Ubuntu server at home with a TV tuner in it. I am using VLC to stream the TV tuner to my machine in another city over the internet. I change the channel by logging in via SSH and issuing a "tune" command (that uses ivtv-tune to set the frequency). This works great for when I am sitting in front of the computer, but I'd like to be able to be a vegetable on the couch in front of the television and use a remote control to change the channel on a set top box and watch it through the television.

Is there a set top box that is less complicated, power hungry, and noisy than a complete computer that will a) allow me to run VLC, b) display VLC's output in full screen on the television, and c) issue SSH commands with the push of buttons on a remote control?

How much does a typical stove-top oven weigh? I'm going to pick up an oven that I purchased on Craigslist. I want to know how much a typical stove-top oven weighs so I know how many people I need to lift it.

I'm just going with my wife. I need to know if I'll need extra muscle to carry it.

Tips for woman on top position? Besides being shy about "being on top," I don't really know the logistics of how to do it. Any tips? How do you support yourself? Do you move up and down or do you rock back and forth? Are you sitting completely upright? Any tips would be much appreciated.

So I'm a fan of movies. A little over a year ago I watched the top 100 of IMDB's top 250. I enjoyed almost all of them. I've since looked through many other lists, but I can't decide if any of them are worth working through (although I have seriously considered the writer's guild's top 100 screenplays). Are there any other lists out there that any of you have enjoyed? Are there any I should particularly avoid?

So I've been doing a watch-a-thon of Dead Like Me (theme) and would really like to get my hands on one of those reaper costumes, but all the ones I've found all look really cheap. Where can I find the uber-est quality reaper costume, notably with the little point in the back of the cloak's headpiece/mantle/whatever? Any liklihood of actually getting one of those pieces from the actual show's main titles?

Help me make my other Mac, in the other room, beep me when an app has finished what it's doing. I have two Macs. The one in the living room is for browsing. The other one, down the hall, is where I do things like burning DVDs. It's not online.

So, if burning a DVD takes 20 minutes or so, I forget about it. A couple of hours later I remember and start burning the next one. So about an hour's work can take all day. And I can't be forever walking down the hall to see how it's going.

So, there must be some way I can run a script which monitors ps or top or something, right?

Every minute it could check and if Disk Utility's CPU usage was at 0.00%, then it's finished. And the computer would start quietly beeping. There's still some BELL character you can print to make it beep, right? Am I going to have problems with false positives, readings of zero for a split second?

For all I know there's actually shiny-GUI software which will do this, but I've never heard of it and can't think how to search. And I don't need it. I'll happily start the app, then type

beepwhenfinished 'Disk Utility'

or something.

Strange problem with half of my cable TV connections

Some strange problem with my cable TV. I was connecting a new Sylvania DVR/VCR unit in my bedroom. I used to have a Sony DVD/VCR in that same place and the cable reception used to be just fine. First thing I noticed after attaching the new unit is that the signal quality is very poor. But anyway then I come down to living room which has the Comcast's digital set top box connected to the wall outlet. I noticed there was no signal on TV and box was displaying a 'this channel would be available soon' message. Usually that means some kind of bad or no connection. Before I went up to the bedroom everything was running fine. Did plugging in the DVR/VCR unit blow the cable circuit ?
The way my place is set up is I have a splitter in attic which breaks up the incoming line into two circuits - one going down the front part of the house and other going down the back part. The back part also has a Comcast installed signal amplifier right after the splitter. The back line is further split to connect to the above mentioned DVD(R)/VCR setup in the bedroom and the digital settop box in living room.

After this blip last night the small TVs connected to the front side cable circuit seems to work just fine. I went up into the attic to take the amplifier out of the path and the signal was almost zero at that point in the bedroom DVR/VCR unit. I am now wondering if one side of the attic splitter blew up. Can that happen ? and just from plugging in a new VCR unit in the wall? strange.

I was planning on taking my small LCD TV into the attic and connecting it directly to the splitter output to see if the problem was there.

A question for any male gay mefi members -- or those in the know. It's my understanding that a good percentage of gay men are either exclusively "tops" or "bottoms". My question is this: how can you tell? Are the stereotypical gay mannerisms in fact just a subtle form of communicating this preference? Do you come straight out and ask? Or do you wait until the moment is upon you and hope for the best? Just one of those things I've always wondered about, like how do blind people know what floor to get off in the elevator.
