After reading this thread on the blue, and thinking of this prior question on the behavior of the non-amateur, I ask: What are the tools that experts in your field use? A preferred brand, the must-have piece of equipment? [more inside]
At work, we're creating a digital classroom observation tool. There will be short-answer questions resulting in a report. Google Forms and Survey Monkey aren't getting us there. Do you know other general purpose platforms or specific lesson observation tools I should consider? I'm interested in complete tools, or neat features to include if we end up custom-developing our own. [more inside]

Basically I'm looking for whoever the engineer or engineering company would be that creates some kind of specific tool for a one off specific job. Like the Space Needle is built and finished and then, out of nowhere, you need to change a nut and bolt out that was never supposed to be changed. And to do it you need a 40 foot, weirdly angled wrench. Who would build that? And is there a name for the kind of field or specialty this is?
I programmed an online calculator tool that generates inventory purchasing recommendations for retail store owners. I would like to get feedback on the tool from people who buy inventory for their retail stores for a living. How do I do that? Short of just walking into stores and bothering the owners to take a look at my program or paying for adwords or some such, I'm not sure how to get the word out about my new tool to people who would be interested in using it. Any feedback would be welcome.
What is this mystery tool? It's not really a clamp, since it will not lock into place. I would prefer not to have random guesses, since it's not really helpful, but if you have seen or used this device, you'd solve a great mystery. [more inside]

I am doing a class project for which I need to create a high-fidelity prototype of a mobile app idea. The final assignment in the class is going to be user testing of the prototype. What I'm looking for is a prototyping tool which will allow me to easily create screens with native iPhone widgets. It needs to be high-fidelity and as interactive as possible. And it needs to be accessible on the web. What are the tools that you use? My full requirements are within. [more inside]
This object was amongst tools belonging to a carpenter/furniture restorer, so may be something to do with that trade. Beer bottle cap for size, ~5 inches total length; good condition, but must be at least 20 years old - could be much older. The metal part appears to be aluminium, which would be too soft for many tool uses, so perhaps it is something else entirely?
I often work on my family's cars, however I don't have a garage and have to work in the driveway or in a rented (by the hour) garage with lift. In my workshop I have the tools organized on pegboards and in drawers. That's all fine and dandy, but I've come to realize that 90% of the time I use my tools I have to chuck them in tool bags and boxes and either bring them outside or to the aforementioned garage. I want a mobile storage system where everything has its place and I can see at a glance if something's missing. Like the pegboards, I guess, only portable. [more inside]

Sometimes, one of the first pages of a library book will bear an identifying stamp made of perforations punched through by a special tool. This practice seems to have disappeared, and Googling for it has only frustrated me. What is the tool called and where can I find one? [more inside]
Assuming a level of graphics competence at "low, but very willing to learn", what's the easiest method of creating inserts for audio cassettes? Level of quality around "punk/hardcore/straight edge" on the sliding scale. Preference slightly skewed to a 4 or 5 panel card, tools available are MS Office products, Photoshop Elements and of course GIMP. Access to printers and copiers, willing to lay out double digits for a tool, click-and-drag type template, or assistance. Thoughts/advice/help?

Say you had a team of three to five people working once per week over a year doing a gardening project on one acre of land and poly tunnels in a cold-to-moderate climate with clay and loamy soil (England). What tools would they need a weekly basis and what tools would they need on a once-per-year or quarterly basis?

I have a Challenge to all antique hand tool buffs. I'd really appreciate knowing what this tool is and what it was used for... The tool consists of a brass piece mounted to a wooden handle. The tool measures 6 3/4 " in total length. At the high point of the brass forefront, it is 1 15/16 ". The brass piece is 1 5/8 " wide. It has a tool stamp of 'IDEAL TOOL COMPANY' in raised letters on the reverse side of the upright brass fixture. I could not find anything like it on the Ideal Tool Company Antique website... I would greatly appreciate your expert opinions as to what it is and was used to accomplish. Thank you for your professional and generous offer to identify this hand tool piece !

Looking for a social media tool that allows visitors to our website to sign & send a pre-written email (and to possibly add their own comments or edits as well, but that's not 100% necessary) to a group of local politicians. I've seen things like this many many times on social and political campaign websites, but have no idea if there's an out-of-the-box solution or if we need to hire someone to write it. [more inside]

I have a couple of mini knives/multi-tools (1 Leatherman and 1 Gerber). I like both of them a lot, but they are getting kind of old (1 is 13 years old and the other is about 4 years old). I am looking for a way to clear them properly so that some of the minor rust spots are gone and get rid of all of the "stuff" that has accumulated in the knife over the years. However, where they are so small, I am finding this difficult. Any tips/suggestions as to go about doing this?

I just got a steal of a deal on ebay for a precision mitre hand saw. What cool projects can I do with it?
I'm looking for an object I once saw a picture of. It was an antique tool that was, I think, described as a japanese jade vise, or something similar. It was rectangular in shape, and consisted of a number of stacked wooden wedges that could be slid in and out in relation to one another to form an opening in which a gem could be securely held by the pressure of the wedges.

I'm trying to install a toilet. My contractor put a PVC pipe in the floor, but the end is too high for my toilet to sit level on the ground. So I need to cut the PVC pipe. There's only about a half inch gap around the pipe, so I started trying to cut it with a Dremel from the inside. But it seems to be too thick and overheats the Dremel. Is there another cheap tool I can use for this?
