I bought printed hemmed fabric squares in Japan that I thought were furoshiki, the gift-wrapping fabrics. But they feel too stiff and seem too small for this purpose. What are they really? Tea towels, maybe? (Links to photos in the "more inside") [more inside]

I'm trying to identify the ramen shop in this picture. It was taken in 2009, and I'm pretty sure it was on Chuo Dori. I'm hoping the shirts or signage gives a name or hint. [more inside]
I am going on vacation! To Tokyo! I will be there from Christmas to a few days after the new year, and I've seen a lot of people saying their office is closed for that week. As a first timer and tourist, what can I expect to be disrupted by the New Year's holidays? Transit? Restaurants? Museums? Is there anything going on I positively must see?
Can I view an English language version of Ant-Man at a theatre in Tokyo this week? Japanese subtitles not a problem of course.
After years of wanting to, I finally bought tickets to go to Japan this summer! (Eeeeeee!!!) I'll be flying into Tokyo and I'm already planning to get tickets for the Shinkansen to travel to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. Can you help me figure out great places to see, delicious things to eat, special keepsakes to bring home, and how to deal with logistics while I'm there? [more inside]

Due to a fluid work/living situation I have the freedom to try to make the following dream happen: to live for a month each in several cities of Asia (perhaps Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Hanoi, Bangkok, Phnom Penh) while working on a personal project. My core question is trying to find out if this is feasible within my budget and to ask for recommendations for accommodations in each city. Details within. [more inside]
We'll be in Tokyo between December 27-January 2 at the tail end of our honeymoon, right in the middle of the New Year holidays. Help us add a ryokan stay and onsen relaxation to our itinerary! [more inside]
I'm going to Tokyo in the fall. I'm allergic to soy. It is an allergy triggered by the soy protein, which means that tofu and edamame are not OK but soy sauce is because the protein is denatured. (This is common for people who are allergic to soy - I am no special snowflake.) The easy solution would seem to be to live on yakitori and yakiniku...but I'm also a vegetarian. Difficulty level = 11! [more inside]
I'll be in Tokyo with my family in July, and I would love to check out a sumo wrestling match. I found that there will be a tournament happening in Nagoya while we are there. It looks like the Shinkansen train can make the trip in ~100min. Is this a feasible day trip for 3 ppl (2 adults + 1 6y/o)? Any insight appreciated
I'm traveling with a friend to Tokyo next year, May 24th to June 6th. I've had Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak and Skyscanner on heavy rotation for three weeks and the best price I can find for travel time shorter than 24 hours is about $1500 round-trip. I'd rather not get scolded by our friends for paying too much, and Googling "nyc to tokyo airfare price range" is giving me the equivalent of hearing "usual and customary" from my insurance company, so I am turning to MeFites for help. Possible pertinent details below the fold. [more inside]

I will be in Tokyo for 5 days next week. Since I will be arriving at Haneda airport close to 23h00, I will need to make a call to my airport hotel to collect me at the airport. How does one actually make a phone call in Japan? I know this sounds silly but not knowing how to read all those japanese characters is making me anxious. The hotel is situated in the Haneda area and the phone number starts with 03. I searched flickr for some pictures of payphones and this one indicates that it accepts coins and phonecards. I am now worried that due to the lateness of my arrival; no shops selling phonecards will be open. Any advice ?

What is the best way to take Tokyo's railways from the Tokyo Big Sight (Comiket) to Narita Airport? I've gone to this site and this site and looked at several railway maps from the various transportation companies, but I am just getting more confused. I don't mind a long ride, so the fewer transfers the better. I'm leaving on a Saturday evening.
