I'm starting work soon, any ideas on how I could best spend my time before it starts in one month? This is my second fulltime job since I finished my degree last year, and I'd be far away from home this time.
Just wondered if there are worthwhile things to do in this not so short, but not so long period of time. [more inside]

I want to rig up a way to cover and uncover my fire alarm with ease. I cannot cook in my apartment, at all, without it going off, and I am too short to climb up and cover it every time. Any engineers out there? I'm thinking a wall aligned contraption like what would be on a very high window...does that make sense? Parts? How-to?

For my birthday, my boyfriend arranged for me to take two weeks off work to travel to the place in the world I have most wanted to visit for as long as I can remember. Hurrah! But it turns out that right now is a terrible time to go there (political upheaval, violence, etc.). Sadness. Can you help us figure out where we should go instead? [more inside]

Is there a website or something where i can find interesting/odd festivals, events, competitions ie : state fairs, log rolling competition, auctions, strong man competitions, pop culture debates? I feel like you already have to be in these circles to know about the events but i'm just intersted in doing different things. East coast or nation wide would be great.

I'm sick of Oklahoma, sick of cold and snow, sick of everything to do with this place. I want out of the state, but cant' decide where to go next. Over the last few years I've lived in San Diego, Orlando, Cocoa Beach, the Chicago area, Tulsa Ok, and originally the Phoenix area. Most of my moves have been prompted by having a friend with a couch willing to pick me up from the Greyhound station, but this time I'd like to go somewhere completely new and for the first time truly start over on my own. My boyfriend is about to face a court date next week for a furnishing alcohol to a minor charge.... he would gladfully face punishment for this crime, however, he didn't furnish alcohol to a minor. The prosecutor wants him to accept the plea agreement and not waste anyone's time. My boyfriend just doesn't want it on his record. Any ideas? [more inside]

I've used the Toshiba RD-XS32SU recorder for years; it's an excellent device for recording tv programs and making dvds. It has a wide variety of extremely useful editing features. Although it's no longer being made since Toshiba decided to focus on blu-ray, it's been long regarded as the premiere video recorder. Alas, my recorder is now refusing to recognize any brand of disc when I try to load. The only way it will accept a disc is after it's been unplugged for several hours. Then it will load one disc, but after that, no more.
Since college football season is here and I record many games and burn them to dvds, I'm in the market for a reliable recorder.
What models do you recommend, techie members of the hive mind? Are there any reasonably priced ones that include the editing features of the Toshiba RD-XS32SU?
Thanks in advance!

I have just accepted an offer to teach in a small town near Steamboat Springs, which is across the country from where I have lived/worked mostly all my life. It's a huge step for me (I'm nearly 40), and I am okay with the newness of starting over, etc. I am a bit nervous about the learning curve, but I think the people will be gracious and helpful, so that's not something that causes me to lose sleep.
What I've worked on almost day and night since taking the job offer (teaching) is a budget. It's an enormous pay cut for me (approximately $15,000), and I'm concerned about being able to cover costs. I'm more of a saver than spender, and I've always probably saved more than the average person. I know that teachers live there and survive (and maybe even thrive!) on the salary. I think I'll be okay as I get my bearings, but for now I would be so grateful to anyone who can share their thoughts about budgeting in Steamboat Springs, cost of living, anything at all.

Welcome to Guam!
Would anyone out there know how to say "Welcome to Guam" in Chamorro? My Google-fu has failed me, yet has lead to an interesting education on the history of Guam. I basically work on a ship and compile printed information on each port we visit. In a "good idea at the time" moment, I started using the local phrase for "welcome to..." as the header. It's been interesting as we travel around the world, but Guam has stumped me! Any ideas?

How to get the best conversion rate (GB Pound to US Dollar)?
I've been working in London for the past year, trying to save up money for grad school when I return to the states. I was told that December was the best month of the year to do a GBP to USD conversion (not too sure how accurate that is).
I bank with Barclays (England) and Chase (US) and am in the states at the moment. I've brought the money (in GBP) over because I thought it would give me more conversion options.
I know that it can get complicated with conversion rates changing, various banks with their own exchange rates, etc. I'm willing to open an online bank account if that's the best option to transfer pounds to dollars.
Are there any conversion geniuses out there who can help give me any tips?

How do I let people love me? Will I ever outgrow my fear of intimacy? I'm in my late 20s. I'm scared of intimacy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not scared of sex. Won't think twice about a threesome, but am startled by holding hands. If a guy wants to get to know me more, compliments me, or crosses the line from being sweet to me to being sweet on me, I get super flustered. I stutter or look at my feet. I run away. [more inside]

I cannot figure out how to transfer articles I've saved at Instapaper to my new Kindle 3. From what I read it ought to be possible, but after two days I can't set it up. If I understand correctly, Instapaper will email to my kindle email address the articles I select to be sent, and the Kindle is somehow supposed to receive them via my Wi-Fi.
Need I admit I'm a bit clueless? I need very specific step-by-step directions and or suggestions for finding / hiring somebody to set this up for me. I bought the Kindle mainly to be able to do this.
I work on Mac Book Pro.
