Help me move email to word

How can one take a bunch of emails and easily move them in to a word document? What I would like to do is take a bunch of email correspondence (between myself and a friend) and move all the emails to a readable word document. I would say there are about 200 separate emails. Is there a way to do this that is less tedious than copy and pasting?

Thank you so much.

A ladder left behind

[FearFilter]: 15 years ago I experienced an imminent death/serious injury moment that turned out ok. However, I still feel physical chills and tingly feelings even thinking about it. Am I the only one or is this common? Thoughts and stories appreciated. The science is a huge bonus. Short background. Many years ago some friends and I decided to put a ladder out the 3rd floor house in order to gain access to the roof.

I clearly recall the way back down the ladder and it is no mistake, balance was against me. That 1 second of fighting against of gravity while looking down is ingrained in my mind. The moment is etched forever in the brain and triggers immediate fear and physical response if I focus on it. WTF? After so long?

I can't be the only one that has such a memory that stirs such strong physical and emotion reaction. What is it called and how does one not be so jolted?

My (really not great) handwriting into pretty, pretty computer text?

My (really not great) handwriting into pretty, pretty computer text? Is Livescribe the answer? I have to take a lot of handwritten notes in my job. This results in a lot of them being stored up in notebooks and I will never be bothered to type them all up afterwards and so alot of useful info is left to moulder. I'm looking for a solution that will enable me to make handwritten notes, transfer them to a computer and then have them OCR'd (is that a verb?) into text which I can then store and transfer.

I've seen the Pulse Smartpen.

A few points:-

1. I'm fine with using the special dotted paper
2. If relevant, running Windows XP
3. I'm not fussed about recording audio although it doesn't hurt if it's there.
4. I want to avoid (at all costs) taking notes on ordinary paper and then scanning and OCRing them
5. I've seen some stuff which involves clipping something to an ordinary sheet of paper - not sure I like the look of that.

My questions:-

1. Does this thing actually take my (admittedly not great) handwriting and convert it into text? I've seen some reviews but would be interested to hear if anyone has live experience of this
2. If it doesn't, does anyone have any recommendations of something that would do this?

Thanks for your help

Help me gain the wit that Iain M. Banks thinks I should have.

In Look to Windward by Iain M. Banks there is a part where one of the Estodiens say to Quilan, 'I hope you have the wit to realise you past two little tests there, Major, not one'. It appears that I do not have the wit. Possible spoilers inside. This comes after Quilan's training when he first meets the second Estodien. One of their helpers circles around behind him and instead of him taking the hand offered in front of him. He spins and crouches down in his 'defense position'.

One test he passed was to know that he was about to be attacked; but what was the other? Was it as simple as him spotting someone who was out of place and a potential threat? But doesn't that just link into the 'first' test?

Programs similar to Couch to 5k?

Are there other graduated exercise programs like the Couch to 5K? I hate running, but I like the specificity, and the feeling of "leveling up" it gives me. I'm a mid-twenties female with a desk job. I'd like to be more active and to lose weight, but I find most forms of physical activity incredibly boring. HOWEVER, I did try the couch-to-5k program a few years ago and had some success with it, even though I hate running. I liked that it gave me boxes to check off and goals for each day. Are there other similar programs out there?

Moving from LA to London. What do I need to know?

Hi there, My company is transferring me to London at the end of the month and I haven’t had much time to do some essential research. Part of the problem is I don’t even know the right questions to ask, or the right places to go on the web to find the info I need.
Here are a few things that I’d need to know in order to get me started, if anyone is so inclined to lend their knowledge: Apartment, bank, mobile phone, international calls, location, public transit, exemption from US taxes, tying up loose ends in the US. Anything else I may be missing? APARTMENT – what documentation/qualifications/prerequisites will I need to rent an apartment there? Do I need to have a local bank account or credit established? Will it be a problem if I’m from the US?

BANK – I’ve heard that I should consider setting up an international bank, that way it will be set up before I get there. I’ve also heard that the international fees are outrageous and I should eventually set up an account with a local bank like Lloyds. I’m not sure if it makes much of a difference, but I will be getting paid in pounds. Any recommendations? What do I need in order to open an account (international or local)? I currently bank with Chase in the US.

MOBILE PHONE – can I use my current iPhone that’s under AT&T’s service? And advice on unlocking it vs. selling it here and buying one when I get there (only thing is I don’t want to be without a phone when I first get there since that’s my lifeline)?

For INTERNATIONAL CALLS, should I look into an international plan through a UK carrier, or should I use services like Skype?

LOCATION within my budget– I will be working in Bromley but will most likely want to live somewhere in central London. The train to Bromley leaves from the Victoria station. Any advice on areas to search that would be within my budget (income will be 32,500 pounds p/year)? I’m a single person and happy to live in a modest – but safe – studio.

PUBLIC TRANSIT – I would need M-F access to the train to Bromley, plus 7-days a week access to the underground for sightseeing & exploring. I priced out a monthly pass at 169 pounds per month, but this seems rather high after talking with an acquaintance who recently lived there. Is there a cheaper way to do it?

BICYCLE OR VESPA? - I’m used to having an automobile at my disposal and feel I may miss the freedom of being able to “drive” & arrive quickly to anywhere the public transit may not reach. Anyone have an opinion on whether a bicycle or a scooter may be something to consider? Parking/fees/ theft/plentiful places to lock up a bicycle, etc?

TAXES – Since I will be there for a year and getting paid in pounds, is there anyway to claim exemption from US taxes for the time I am away?

What LOOSE ENDS do I need to tie up in the US if I’m going to be away for one year?
Car insurance, registration, etc.

Anything else that I may be missing? I’d be infinitely grateful for any info you can provide, or web resources you can direct me to.

Best,
Scared to death?

What is this story about someone literally scared to death? Please help me find this story:

In India, a team executed a prisoner by telling him that he would bleed to death drop by drop, and then instead letting water drip on to the floor. And then he died. Something to this effect.

Somehow it was an experiment about the mind-body connection. And maybe it was quoted by Jerome Groopman (or in another pop medical book).

I recall that it was quoted as an actual medical article with references. Has anyone else head of this article? Could you direct me to it? Anything similar in PubMed?

What's a 14 Year Old Boy to Do In NYC???

My 14 year old stepson is bored in New York. What should he do? How about Montreal? My 14 year old stepson can't think of anything fun to do in New York. I know, I know. Me, I would go to the Natural History Museum. The Museum of Television and Radio. Ellis Island. The Cloisters. I would walk around. I might go swimming at the Y. I might even sign up for a language course.

He has rejected all of these. What other things are there to send a 14-year-old boy off to do by himself? He has no friends in New York, and I'm in Canada.

Also, he'd like to come back and spend some of the summer with us, in Montreal. Aside from the Just For Laughs Festival and La Ronde, what other fun things am I missing for him to do?

How to handoff cell to land line

I have two new iPhones. I also have a land line in my house. My cell signal in my house is poor at best. I like my land line so I'm going to keep it. I would like my cell phone to transfer to my land line when I'm home so I can get cell calls at home. I can't seem to find a product that will hand off my cell calls to my land line.
When to book to get cheapest flights?

Given that the airlines are reducing the numbers of flights due to the economic downturn, what is the optimal time to book cheap flights? In the past, I've had great success booking domestic flights 2-3 days before. This time, we will be booking 2 round trip tickets. I just booked a flight from the western US to Montreal for my husband, three weeks ahead, as we found the planes were filling up rapidly. We didn't get much of a deal.
Standby is not on option as I'll be flying with an autistic person.
Any and all hive-mind thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

How to flight?

How do I fight? I'm a pretty small guy. I'm also a former US Marine. I had loads of combat training, and instructors usually took me aside and told me that if I'm ever to depend on my physical prowess rather than my riflemanship, I am to fight dirty. Cock punching, eye gouging, neck jabs, knee breaking. All sorts of stuff that will enable me to survive in a situation where my life depends on it.

If I was in Belleau Woods, or Omaha Beach...that would make sense. But I'm not. I'm a civilian...and I have never been in combat.

What the hell do I do if and when I'm in a fight?

I don't want to say I'm a pacifist...but its been about 2-3 years since I last hit somebody. I don't like doing it...and I will only do it if I feel like my life is in danger. I'd rather look like a wimp and walk away, than be a tough guy who actually hurts someone. In fact, I'd rather take a punch and lay on the ground crying, than jab someone in the throat with a rigid hand. I don't want to hurt anyone. Thats my second goal.

My first goal is to not allow myself to be SERIOUSLY hurt.

In most situations, I feel I can walk away. No problem. If 99% of the people watching me think I'm a wimp...thats fine. I'd much rather be a perceived wimp, and leave without ANYONE hurt than hurt somebody to inflate my pride.

BUT...there MAY be situations in the future(although I try to avoid them like the plague) where I may be put in a situation where I HAVE to hurt or get hurt.

How the hell do I fight against some jerk who has less skill than me without killing or hurting him?

Mind you...running is ALWAYS an option for me. I will ALWAYS choose to run rather than being caught in a fight. Is it because I'm a wimp...nope. Its because I don't want anybody to suffer. Seriously.

But what do I do if I'm in a hurt or be hurt type of fight? I know this is isn't the best place to ask...but for years, I haven't been able to come up with an adequate solution.

How do I disable the situation without hurting the other person(s), or getting hurt?

I'm freaking funny...and have no problem running or ditching any material goods. Those are always my first options. I've been in fights before...and I have remained pretty calm (probably because I knew I could disable the situation and leave quickly). But I am DEATHLY afraid of the day I am surrounded by a few people and feel as if my only option is to fight dirty. I'm a civilian, and I don't want to do that. What the hell do I do?

Any help?

Sorry this isn't a typical AskMe type of question...but I really do need help here.

ET Phone Home

VPS and Internet Proxy: I have a VPS and want to be able to access the internet remotely from it. For example, the VPS is hosted in Scandinavia while I am in USA, how do I create a proxy server so I can access internet through the VPS country? Reasons for doing this are simple. While traveling there is country only content I can't access from abroad. Much like Hulu isn't available outside US.

I figure there must be a simple script or some type of settings I can use, but my google-fu isn't coming up with any good results.

VPS is Linux based, SSL enabled, etc....Perl, PGP, Python -- you name it, it is supported.

Sleepz?

If you are really exhausted from lack of sleep and stress, x say 2 months off and on, what's the best thing to do to get back in good shape? I've had a pretty stressful couple of months (2 moves, started a crazy school program, lots of work, anxiety). I haven't been sleeping particularly well for a lot of it and also fell of my exercise routine that I'd been doing since January.

Anyway, I missed out on a lot of sleep. The last few weeks I've just felt weary. Sometimes I don't but it doesn't take much for extreme weariness to kick in.

So what do I do? I have a hard time sleeping during the day, or sleeping in. Should I force myself to lay in bed, even if I don't sleep? Or just try to get on a more regular sleep schedule and wait for things to fix themselves?

An additional problem is that I usually wake up a bit after sunrise and it's really hard to get back to sleep. And I play music at night so I'm often awake until 11 or 12. = I'm getting 6.5 hours of good sleep a night quite often, and 8 would be more like it.

English to Latin Translation needed!

I need to have a latin phrase translated for a tattoo I'm getting, anyone know latin?

the phrase is:

"One day we will burn together as stars" "One day we will burn together as stars"

I want "One day" to communicate a time in the distant future. I wish to have the idea translated, rather than the exact text of 'single day'. I don't know Latin colloquialisms, so any help would be much appreciated :)!

My family and I will be driving from San Sebastian Spain to Barcelona the week of April 6th. I am interested to hear preferred routes to take that are off the beaten path taking into account there is still plenty of snow in the mountains. We are happy to go via France or Spain. All ideas welcome!!

Don't shoot, I'm a book dealer

What can I expect from a US border guard if I go into the USA from Canada carrying packages of things I've sold on ebay to mail in the USA? I've been selling things on ebay for many years. I've mailed hundreds and maybe thousands of packages from Canada to the USA. However Canada Post has become so ridiculously overpriced that I'm looking into a new method to save money. I live in Kingston and can drive over the border to Wellesley Island in New York in less than half an hour, mail things at the post office there, and save huge amounts of money. However, something tells me that the border patrol may have a problem with this, even though I can apparently mail things to the USA with no problem. What's the difference between mailing something and taking it over the border in a car? Will the border patrol make me pay duty on these things? Will they require me to have some sort of proof of sale? I'm particularly looking for answers that can be positively backed up with an official source of some sort, ideally the US Border Patrol, or Customs, or whatever. I have three packages of used books that were sold for very little money (US$50, $18, and $10). Is there a minimum limit below which they don't care about it? I could just not tell them about them, or tell them I'm giving them away, or sending them to friends, but I know from experience that you DON'T want to start playing those games with US Customs. If they sense one thing that's a bit funny it gets very weird very fast. So I'd rather be totally honest about what I'm doing, but don't want to pay duty or taxes.
Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks!

Pomodoro, no.

How did you give up certain foods for the rest of your goddamn life? Well, it's that time again. The time where my doctor says, "John, this is it..."

Giving up tomatoes is really, really difficult but I have to do it. Even though tomatoes are basically wonderful and in everything. What are some ways that Mefites have given up things they are told to stop consuming, and what are some "fun" ways I can work tomatoes out of my diet?

Let me just add: I hate bell peppers, so please do not recommend them as a substitute. Another bell pepper and I will literally vomit. Also, I already cannot eat eggplant. Basically, I am fucked as a human being.

I should note that tomatoes are not the only thing I am being asked to give up but I have to start with the most difficult thing or else none of the rest of the stuff will be easy. Sorry. However, I think I can handle my addiction to Mentos all on my own. Sorry, I know how lame my life is.

Why are file sizes different on XP to Vista Machines??

Why do file sizes vary from Windows XP to Vista????? I have been transfering Photo files from my old XP desktop to my new Vista Laptop and noticed that the file sizes were sometimes smaller on the Vista machine by 200MB on a 1Gig file. I initially thought that some pictures had been missed, so tried copying them again. Noticing that they were still smaller. I decided to count the actual pictures and there was the same amount!!!
So, how/why is this possible???????

Help me learn piano on the cheap!

Help me learn piano on a budget. I have always wanted to learn, and now I am 31 and tired of just wishing! Problem is, money is tight, so I am looking for suggestions on how to teach myself on the cheap (if that's possible). So, if you are able to suggest some affordable equipment (I own no piano), that would be great. Preferably a keyboard I could connect to my computer, as opposed to a full, traditional piano (space is tight as well). And any resources for learning, would be much appreciated.

Is it possible to earn a post-graduate degree in a field unrelated to your undergrad degree?

My boyfriend wants to return to school and get a degree in psychology, but isn't sure of the best way to do so, especially considering the caliber of schools he is targeting. Here is the situation: 35 year-old man who has had varying degrees of success in the business world, but realized it really is not an area of passion for him, wants to go back to college. He has always had an interest in, and aptitude for, psychology, and helping people resolve their problems. He currently resides in Northern California, and two of the very best schools in the country for psychology are in the Bay Area - Stanford and Berkeley.

He has a BS in MIS from Clarkson University, and an MBA from an international program called the Center for Global Business Studies (a joint program which no longer exists between the University of Hartford and the Grand École des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris). His undergraduate GPA was around 3.3, his graduate average around 3.8.

Is it possible for him to earn a graduate degree in psychology without having any undergraduate education in a related field? Will schools like Stanford or Berkeley require him to have credits in the area before joining their graduate degree programs?

As to being accepted, what are the requirements like to join a prestigious graduate program such as the ones offered by Stanford or Berkeley? What are the major areas of concern? What is the best way for determining who to speak to about acceptance requirements, and the best way of approaching that person?

I would like him to be able to maximize his chances of getting accepted. Given his level of passion I am positive that he will be a great student, the kind any school would love to have. How can he be seen and heard such that these schools will recognize that as well?

Finally, for graduate programs, what is the timing for applications/acceptance? I believe that for most undergraduate programs you want to have all of your applications in basically a year before the semester you will be joining. Is this the same for graduate programs?

Finally, are there any international schools (that teach in English preferably, or possibly French) that have graduate programs in psychology that compare favorably with that at Stanford, Berkeley, or the University of California-LA? If so, how do the things I am concerned about above change for this(these) international school(s)?

Thank you for all your assistance!

Do most newspapers allow anonymous letters to the editor? I recently submitted an anonymous letter to the editor of my local newspaper regarding a pet store's treatment of its ferrets. I had spoken to the store employees and management several times, but was always treated rudely and dismissed. I looked on the paper's website for guidelines, but did not find them, so I mailed my letter in.

I do not subscribe to our local paper, so it was a couple days later before I saw a paper copy and the printed guidelines. Apparently, you must submit name, address, and phone number with your letter. I did not think this would be an issue, but now I wonder if this is the status quo for newspapers or just the decision of my local, conservative paper. Please let me know. Thank you, Metafilter friends.

Can I check if I'm still registered to vote or do I need to register again?

So I registered to vote in MA in 2004 but I've moved a few times since then. Can I check if I'm still registered or do I need to register again? I've searched online for about 2 hours now but I can't find any information on how I can check whether I'm still registered.

Now....I know I can re-register with my new address, but I'm wondering (assuming my registration is still good) if I can just leave it be and go to my old town (where I was living in 2004) in November 2008 and cast my vote there.

The only piece of information I was able to come up with is the main telephone number for the town hall of where I used to live, so I can call them also but I don't want to go bouncing around from department to department until I may or may not reach the right person.
