A stranger thought I stole his citybike and proceeded to yell at me. I live in a nice area and this man "looked" to be a respectable middle aged business man, so it came as quite a shock for me. I know I shouldn't care about what crazy strangers say, but getting called a bitch and a fucking c*** really disturbs me! [more inside]
What factors might I consider and questions need I answer in planning a cross-country move for my family from San Diego to the east coast? Looking primarily for advice on logistics, practical considerations on the most economically feasible ways to do this, and personal anecdotes from those of you that have done a long distance, city to city move successfully with a family. I was at a Bank recently 15 minutes before they open. They have a lobby with an ATM machine that can be accessed with your ATM card. A rough looking dude in his 30's was walking very fast to get in to the lobby without using a card. I let the door close quickly behind me as the bank asks you not to let people in without them using their card. [more inside]
One of my closet relatives has self-published a book and now has revisited with hopes of submission to book agents. Aside from being a really interesting and good story, he is flummoxed by the plethora of requirements agents require (synopsis page, sample page, query letters, no attachements etc). He has used OpenOffice to create and is looking for software to help make agent submissions? Any ideas? More Inside the fold! [more inside]
Hi, I'm trying to put together a week of lectures on Women in Refrigerators for my students and I have gone and found Gail Simone's old list and looked at Feminist Frequency's episodes for Bitch Magazine, and I have some passages from a myth textbook and Joseph Campbell's work. But I want to add one of my favorite podcasts, On the Media. I vaguely remember the host Brooke Gladstone talking to a guest once and she says that when she was younger and she remembers watching those old black and white movies like Perils of Pauline she remembers there being something vaguely erotic or sexual about the way that the evil villains would tie up the damsels in distress and leave them on the railroad tracks, and she may have said she wrote her masters thesis on it? But I can't find a thesis on Proquest or JStor that Brooke published, anyone with a fantastic memory?
I am a longtime AmEx customer (nothing fancy, just a charge card) who just moved to the US from Canada and who needs a new credit card. I love the customer service of AmEx--I trust them, especially, for travel and for dispute resolution. So far AmEx Canada has been iffy (reasons below). I'm happy to pay an annual fee. What's my best bet? [more inside]
I would like to help people, maybe specifically teenagers, avoid being trapped in their lives by anxiety and save them some of the regret and difficulties I accrued. I believe if I turned my self seriously toward learning about it I could do some good. What sort of career avenues are there for someone interested in helping with this? And what sort of schooling do I need to have for them? [more inside]

Hi, everyone. I'm interested in selling all of my belongings--two beds, nice chairs, a dresser, a dinner table set, and high chairs--due to an exciting cross-world move. Though I'm currently based in Utah, the bulk of my furniture is disassembled in a storage unit back in Ohio, and I'm expected to leave the US in August 2016. Any tips on what sites to sell things on beyond the typical Craigslist or cosignment shops? I don't anticipate returning stateside anytime soon. Thanks much.

I"m taking a new job in Columbia... I figure i can live in York, or Lancaster.... All my (new) co-workers tell me Lancaster is better... To us (wife & 2 kids) it's about the school districts.... We're gonna rent for a year before we buy, but want to ensure where ever we rent, that if we in fact do buy in a year, will be in the right area where we won't have to move the kids out of school (again)... We both like live music... are we going to have a hard time making friends, or my wife finding a job??? [more inside]

I'm curious to know if there are any works of novels, poetry, and non-fiction that parallel with the work of Walden? From an individualist, naturalist, and stream of consciousness point of view. Particularly works similar to Thoreau's eloquent writing style. [more inside]
Hi MetaFilter, Putting it out for the group to help me weigh the pro's and con's of a career move. I am 44 years old, marketing professional with 10 years experience in health care marketing communication. I recently got my MBA last year and got recruited to go to another large Chicago health care system. The new job pays more and is OK but we are going through a reorg and merger and my position will change going forward. My current boss is leaving the organization and said that he is putting me forward for a better position with more responsibility going into the reorg but it is hard to trust that this will happen since that is all going to be in flux. About a month ago I applied for a federal marketing communication project manager position with the General Services Administration at the Federal Acquisition Service and this past Friday I was offered the job as a GS-13 Step One and they want my answer on Monday. Mr Bellastella & I are going to visit Vieques this fall. We had a lovely experience in Culebra two years ago, stayed at a small guesthouse and loved it! Vieques looks like a place we will really enjoy, and we like the idea of a room or casita, or guesthouse. We're looking at Esperanza, but that's not written in ink yet. [more inside]

My husband owns one small rental house. He had a tenant for several years (who has recently moved). Now that we are screening for new tenants we realize that we must educate ourselves anew about laws pertaining to service animals. We are completely on board about doing things lawfully, but it hasn't been easy to determine what we can and can't do. There seem to be tons of gray areas. [more inside]

I'm moving to Boston and driving up there with my car and belongings. I want to go with the latter. [more inside]

Young professional couple, 30 y/o, being relocated from NY to work in Roseville, CA. Currently work in Manhattan and live right outside the city. We're hoping to live somewhere that is within close distance to bars, restaurants, shops, etc. but are not looking to live in the suburbs. Preliminary research has shown us neighborhoods either very suburby or college towns. We still are hoping for the california feel so are a little weary about living in downtown sacramento but are open to any suggestions. We want to avoid living in an apartment building full of college kids. We would like to be west of sacramento so in closer distance to san francisco/napa/weekend trip options.

After my grandma lost her shit with me last night, she's calmed down enough to admit to my father today that she feels like I can be really condescending sometimes. Eek. This is a piece that I want to work on improving, while I'm also learning to be much more on guard whenever I'm around my grandma. Can you help me be less of an annoyingly (unintentionally) condescending/smug person? Ugh. The worst. [more inside]

I have never had an allergic reaction before so I don't know what to do. I just had hives that lasted for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor and they gave me some shots and it was gone in a day, but it came back the second week - I kept taking my meds so the hives are mostly gone now. Some spots were still kind of itchy but its mostly just dark marks on my face. I was wondering if anybody knows how to remove these dark spots on my face because I really feel uncomfortable looking at the mirror and seeing myself like I'm looking at a moon. [more inside]

My husband and I are looking for a hip, progressive, ethnically mixed city that is not over-priced yet. We have lived in nyc, Miami and La and have been priced out of all these markets with the overpriced housing. Considering Baltimore as I heard its not completely off the charts housing wise. I am a chef and teach cooking classes and he is in the renewable energy business and we work for ourselves. Both of us like good food, outdoors stuff like biking and hiking and enjoy a liberal atmosphere. Are we dreaming or might Baltimore be a good fit?
My SO sent me a package via USPS (and it is EMS on this end) on June 17, from Ohio. I can include the tracking number if that would be helpful but the tracking website's latest information says "Processed Through Sort Facility June 18, 2013, 10:29 pm ISC CHICAGO IL (USPS) PO to Addressee" Inside the package were just some inexpensive gifts, nothing that I think would get stuck at the border. Is my package lost? What steps can I (or the sender) take to recover it? any advice would be much apreciated
We are looking to live near the water and have tried Miami and LA and are now on the shoreline of Ct. The only problem is; we can't afford to buy a house here and the winter is a bit of a deal breaker. Thinking of moving to the West coast of Florida for the water and the warmth and would love to hear anyone's experience of this area. We have thought of Sarasota and would be open to other cities or large towns. We are both active, still working, (self employed) very liberal and interested in great food and a community of interesting people. We couldn't be somewhere where everyone is retired. Any thoughts?
Could I get a master's degree in market research or market analysis, even with a poor foundation in math? How long would that take? And could I qualify for any scholarships or anything to do it for cheap or free? (It might be a wild fantasy, but I have to ask.) Basically, I want to be that person that helps organizations target their advertising and campaigns in an impactful way by analyzing consumer behavior and consumer demographics. Details below: [more inside]
I ordered a box set from an amazon user at the end of april listed as "like new" which it wasn't. Asked for a refund, and he asked for more details and pictures which i gave, then i heard nothing for well over a week. So i decided to file an a to z claim on Monday, then today (Thursday) he says how he had been locked out of his bank account due to some banking issue. Now he's all gung ho to give me a refund after i send the stuff back and drop the a to z. I feel a little weary trusting him. He has good feed back, but it's only 6 feedbacks. Should i do as he suggests or continue letting amazon look into it?

I'm trying to think of a movie where a man is having an affair with another woman. During one of the encounters while he should be watching his child, the child accidentally dies I think by falling into a pool. After feeling grieved, he goes through some sort of cave in a park and goes back in time and can make things right again. Apparently, there's something weird about the new neighborhood he's in (spoilers so I won't say more). Anybody know what the movie is called?!
Damn you facebook. An acquaintance (at best) posted on facebook that he is glad Jimi, Curt, Hank, etc died young because they would have at some point started being old/fat/lazy/sell out, etc (Fade Away). I want to throw out a few names of people who not only kept making good music but who had a critically better musical period later in life.
