How to buy new tires for old AWD wagon in snowy climate?

We recently bought an old 1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon (2.2L, AWD) and find ourselves needing to replace all of the tires. Complications: snow, AWD, no storage for winter tires, and we need to be able to use the car on poorly maintained logging roads for field work in the summer. [more inside]

mix and match tires with all wheel drive?

I have a all wheel drive vehicle. A number of years ago all four tires were replaced , they have never been rotated. Now the fronts will not pass inspection but the rears probably have about 40% of tread left. I understand that one can ruin the transfer case if one runs different sized tires on this and many other all wheel drives. I would like to buy two of the exact same tires, which are still available, and put those on the back and put the old tires on the front. Do you think that the difference in diameter between the new tires and the partially worn ones will cause a problem with the drive train?

Two or 4? Need snow tire advice!

My fiancee's car is a 2003 Altima that I would like to put some snow tires on. I have used 4 tires on my vehicle for work (paid for by the company) and am wondering how much difference there is between using 2 or 4. I am not cheaping out on her of course, but we both have concerns over the cost/benefit ratio as we are just starting out. I am very familiar with using 2 new tires on front wheel drive cars with less tread on the back with all seasons and summer tires, and experienced no difficulty in seasonal months. If you have used 2 tires snow tires only, what was your experience? More inside... [more inside]

Tire overinflation

The sticker in my Malibu Maxx prescribes tire pressure of 30 psi; the sidewalls on the tires list a maximum pressure of 44 psi -- is it OK to run them at 35 psi, or higher, to gain better gas mileage, or will the money saved be nullified by shortened tire life? [more inside]

How do I protect my car from thieves?

How do I protect my car from thieves? I headed out to work this morning and was confronted by this. (that would be all four tires and wheels - $750 worth) I have a Clifford alarm system, I always park in highly visible areas, I stay out of "bad areas", there is a police academy 100 yards from where this picture was taken. What do I do to make this never happen again? [more inside] [more inside]
