I am looking for a system or tips on, basically, how to write a summary of a book that explains its main points. [more inside]
I am the first bartender this restaurant has hired and this is also my first bartending job, so both the owner and I are coming up with the tip out policy from scratch. This is in the US -- if you are not familiar with how US tipping culture works, please don't answer. [more inside]
About 8 months ago I asked a question about becoming a bartender on the fly, and the answers I received were fantastic, and really helped me become comfortable mixing drinks faster than I would have. But I have a few questions about something I didn't realize I would need help with: Tipping, or receiving tips. [more inside]

Our cleaning lady is taking her first holiday in a decade to visit her family. I was planning on giving her a cash present in lieu of the money she would have earned at our place, but I don't think she understands tips and I don't want her to feel further obliged to us. This has been a problem in the past because she has very strong views on hard work and duty &c. How should I present the idea (and money) to her in a culturally appropriate way? Am I just overthinking this?
Ni hao! I will be visiting China for the first time this December. Please share your advice and anecdotes! [more inside]
Is it fine to clean my silicone eartips with alcohol-based wipes? I've been doing it for a few years, and even the same tips for quite a while, without noticing any problem. Yet some scant audiophile advice on the Net says don't use alcohol. I'm wondering "Why not?" But I'm concerned if I am doing damage... Sometimes I do soak them in soapy water, but it's so time-saving to wipe them down with these pads from the first-aid aisle; plus, they -- and my ears -- stay pretty clean anyway. (I have standard silicone tips that came with Brainwavz and other brands of in-ear monitors.) Thank you.

I need to take an outdoor photograph of a subject standing in front of a large, white, shiny background (a vehicle). The person and the vehicle are equally important elements in the picture. I need to take the photo when both the subject and the vehicle are available, so I have no control over the date or time or weather. Assuming I need to do this on a bight, sunny day (although I'm hoping for a slightly overcast one) where do I position them relative to the sun? [more inside]

I'm trying to make travel plans, however, the whole situation is changing so rapidly. I have not booked any tickets yet. My rough original intention was to travel throughout Southeast Asia through China (Hong Kong) then up to Europe. I originally planned to start in Singapore and work through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam but the recent situation in Bangkok has made me nervous. I'm trying to stay as safe as possible. I want to do as little backtracking as possible. I have saved up a bit of cash and am using the trip as a personal sabbatical/soul searching. My time frame can be up to a year on the road. What would a typical itinerary look like/do you have any alternate suggestions? What do people generally do when on the road for this long/any suggestions to stay busy during this time?

My daily/everyday bag is a canvas haversack - about as large as a small messenger bag. I already know to carry things like breath strips and a small umbrella and a paperback around, but recently I've been looking to expand on the everyday items. For example: there was an awkward lull in conversation during a train ride. I happened to be carrying a pack of cards and taught everyone to play German Whist - wonderful ice breaker, great way to spend the trip. I'm looking for things like that, small, non-obvious essentials to put in your bag that can be used in many different situations.
What I'm search for may not exist. We have recently purchased a new metal-framed coffee-table with legs that taper down to ~1/2" at the floor. With the legs being so slender, they are creating little holes in the pile of the rug that they rest on. I'm looking for something like this, but perhaps only 1/2" wide so they aren't so obvious in the middle of the living room. The smallest I've been able to find is about 3X that size. Thoughts? I'm aware of the stick-on rubber/felt pads that are available and may need to go in that direction, but thought I'd see if anybody has some other ideas like above. thank you.

I'm having my photo taken for professional reasons and if my career takes off it will be seen quite widely. I'm a not-particularly-makeup-savvy female of ~30, not quite as slim or toned as I used to be, with bags under my eyes and not particularly great skin. Oh, and my default face in all photos to date is a solid gurn. [more inside]
We're going to Portland for a week-long vacation (and maybe a moving trial run) in a few days. We've visited before, but this time we're taking our 2-year-old daughter, and I wanted to ask if there are any great toddler friendly destinations or day trips that we shouldn't miss. Any tips on kid-friendly restaurants and organic grocery shopping in NW Portland are also appreciated. [more inside]

I have an Excel spreadsheet with just over 3000 sentences in column A. I need to go through looking at each one and entering some data into columns B-F. The first thing I have to enter is whether the sentence is in the past tense or present tense. If it is past tense, I can ignore it and not have to enter anything in columns C-F. I just move on to the next sentence. Is it going to be quicker if I go through the whole spreadsheet filling out column B first (past/present) and then do a second pass to fill out the rest of the details for the present tense sentences, or quicker to do it all at once for each sentence? Or is it a wash? [more inside]
