What time is it on an airplane?

Travelling across a time zone by air is ambiguous. It's hard to tell exactly when it happens. When travelling across time zones by air, when does the time change? Especially across multiple zones. I've noticed that I never see or hear a reference to the time while onboard. For instance, a movie might start at "fifteen minutes after takeoff," but not at 4:45pm. [more inside]

How can I break up with my long time girlfriend and potential fiance?

A few months ago I told my long time girlfriend that I was planning on asking her to marry me in August. I felt pressured in to saying that at the time and I think it's time we go our separate ways. She has been working on the things that bother me and for the past month been altogether great. I am just not ready for marriage (excuse) and I think that in the long run I would not be happy in this relationship. I would feel too controlled, too restricted, and lonely. She is very sensitive and I'm afraid of what she might do if I break up with her, but I have to do something, it's August! She doesn't really have any close friends and is not close to her family. I'm it, really. I love her a lot and care about what happens to her, I just feel like I should probably move on. Any help? [more inside]

How do you fit reading into a busy schedule?

When the time for reading is limited does the dedicated reader read only when she is in the mood, or does he read regardless of mood? I'm a family man with an 7 to 4 job. My favorite time for reading is the morning when I'm at my most mentally alert. At night I tend to be too tired to concentrate. I'd like to know how you MeFi guys fit reading into your schedules. Where and when do you read? Do you need silence, or do you like background sound? General comments and specific tips all welcome.

What are the digital not-clocks on the Budapest Metro all about?

On the Budapest Metro there are signs hanging from the ceiling that show train times - they have analogue clocks at one end and, at the other end, a digital display counting upwards, apparently in minutes. They're not minutes past the hour and they're not minutes since the last train arrived, so what the devil are they for?

Perceptions of Time

Have perceptions of time changed in the last few hundred years? Did people used to speak more casually about periods of time? I'm reading Jane Eyre, and Charlotte Bronte uses "ten minutes" in an odd way. I suspect she means (by today's standards) 30 seconds. Is this sloppy writing, cultural difference or what? [more inside]

How differently do people think?

Richard Feynman described thinking as basically just talking to yourself. Then a friend told him to picture a part of a car and then asked him how he explained to himself what the part looked like. He then realized that you can see when you think as well. Then later on he tried counting up to 60 and seeing how accurate his perception of time was. He usually counted to around 48 by the time 60 seconds had gone by. Then he figured that he could count pretty much all of the time and not get distracted, but he couldn't talk and count at the same time. (+) [more inside]

Book about Time

I once read a book that talked about Time and how the concept of time is different in each culture. It mentioned this: In the US we would make a doctors appointment at 3pm and we made sure to show up at this time and would expect to be served at or close to this time...in another country you set the appointment for 3pm, but your would arrive about 4pm and the doctor would get to you until 5pm and thats how life is there... Who is the artist?

I remember back in the 70s seeing a story on TV about an artist who filmed himself punching a timeclock every hour 24/7 for a whole year. At the end of the year he had a short time-lapse film of himself punching a clock 365 times. He had shaved his head at the beginning of the year, so you could see his hair growing over the duration of the film. He described how he had to structure his life in order to be able to do the filming every hour and how his mind began to short circuit from not getting enough REM sleep from sleeping in only hour-long stretches at a time. I'd like to see that film again. Does anybody else remember this story and/or who this guy is?

Internal Clocks

Somewhat related to grumblebee's question below but not really: I have an uncanny sense of time. I never wake up to an alarm because I spontaneously wake up a minute or two before it goes off and reach out and shut it off. Also, If asked to guess the time after not having looked at a clock for a day, I am usually within 10 minutes or so. Firstly, what exactly is the "internal clock" and how does it differ among people? Secondly, is my behavior typical or is it at an extreme?
