Ticks on cats: rip them off or leave them on?

My (outdoor) cats pick up a lot of ticks and I live in an area with a lot of Lyme Disease. Consensus among Vets seems to be that there's never been an observed case of Lyme in a cat (though they're not really sure why). I'm opposed to putting any type of repellent on the cats (as it gets in their bodies). [more inside]

What do I need to know about Ticks in the home.

My dog and I were in Missouri last week and I didn't even think about pest control as we do not need it in Colorado where I am. He became covered in tiny (what I think are) dog ticks and few dear ticks. I was driving back to colorado and didn't know what to do. So I put advantix on him. Now what? [more inside]

Where have all the ticks gone in Arizona?

My dogs in the 70s' never left the yard, in Phoenix, yet ticks were an issue. Tons…I can remember my Dad burning them off with a cigarette (probably not the best way.) FF to 2016, I've had a dog since 2013, no ticks nor fleas. He goes to the dog park 4 times a week (not the cleanest place.) I've had three cats for 20 years, no issues. The new area is in Tucson. Is it an area thing, climate thing, or are ticks on the downward spiral? [more inside]

Transmissible bugs?? (Chigger warning)

My boyfriend has returned from a weekend in the woods with a significant chigger problem, which he says is "everywhere," eyebrow raise. How do I protect myself and how can he get some relief? I realize this is google-able but I can't bring myself to search for self-care reasons. [more inside]

What fly repellent do I want?

I hike a lot in Northern California. I've been getting swarmed by flies, and today several of them bit me. I'm not allergic or hugely reactive to the bites, but the constant buzzing in my ears is really annoying. What product or ingredient should I be looking for to keep the flies away? If it also repels ticks, even better. [more inside]

Spraying our yard for ticks: yea or nay? And chemical or organic?

We have a small back yard that backs up into some woods. I’ve seen deer in the neighborhood (not in our yard though), and there are definitely mice, bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, and neighborhood cats and dogs that can be seen roaming our property. We’re thinking of getting the back sprayed for ticks, esp. for the sake of our one year old. Is that overkill? And if we spray, do organics work, or do we need to go chemical? [more inside]

are Damminix tick tubes really safe for cats?

I'm thinking about using Damminix tick tubes around my yard to reduce the population of deer ticks, but I'm concerned about the possibility that any cats who catch and eat mice that have the permethrin on their fur might be poisoned. [more inside]

Lyme disease: just how screwed am I?

LymeDiseaseFilter: Have you or someone you're close to had Lyme, had it treated, and more-or-less lived to tell the tale? I'm seeking anecdata to help me calibrate exactly how freaked out I should be about this diagnosis. [more inside]

Am I infesting my garage with wood ticks when I leave my work clothes there?

I volunteer at a nature preserve which is known to have wood ticks & deer ticks. People have gotten Lyme disease from tick bites there, so out of concern for our household critters, I take off my clothes in the garage upon returning home and proceed directly to the shower. Would any ticks on said clothing migrate to the rest of the garage, or would they stay put until I pick up the pile & put it through the washer?

Keeping ticks off my dog

I am having a problem keeping ticks off my dog. He is on Advantix, which the vet said to give him every 3 weeks, but I am STILL finding ticks on him. He is kept indoors for the most part, but he does like to explore the backyard, and we go on a long walk each day. I don't want to keep him cooped up, I want to let him be a dog, but I don't want to have to keep taking ticks off him...so gross. Any advice on things to try other than Advantix? Thanks! Best way to keep ticks off of a cat?

What's the best way to keep ticks off of an active, outdoorsy cat (brand recommendations welcome)? Also, is there anything we can spray around her perch to keep any ticks that do hitch a ride from jumping off in the house? (Am already experienced in removing them once we find them, but she seems to pick up the really tiny sort.)
