In search of replacement batteries for older ThinkPads

Looking for a light, Linux-friendly laptop with trackpoint

My Lenovo Thinkpad X220 has been falling apart for awhile, but I've resisted replacing it because shopping for laptops is annoying. But now it's definitely time for something new. I'm overwhelmed by the options, but maybe someone else who's done some laptop-shopping recently can help? I'm looking for something small and light (12-14", less than 4 lbs.), Linux-friendly, and (here's the hard part) with a trackpoint-style mouse. I use my laptop mostly for writing and general Internetting, but also for processing photos, so a decent processor and display is nice. Price isn't a huge issue. I could go with one of the newer Lenovos, and I might still, but I'm interested in other options, as well. I'm not interested in any of the Chromebooks. Any suggestions?

Is the 13" MacBook Air the right laptop for me?

Needing to get a new portable, because the battery in my workhorse laptop is borked, I ordered a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro - which I am typing on at the moment. So far, it seems fine for what I need, but I was wondering whether the hive mind could think of a better solution. Generic snowflake detail inside. [more inside]

Explain my slightly annoying keyboard problem!

I have a Thinkpad T430. I can type anywhere up to 120 words per minute. When I type certain words at high speed my system freezes for a split second - long enough to be noticeable and to break my rhythm but not long enough that anyone watching would probably notice. Sometimes it registers the key-presses, sometimes it doesn't. What's going on here? [more inside]

Mysterious scroll bar appears when I use two fingers on the trackpad

I apologize for the sheer banality of this question, but when I use two fingers to scroll through a web page using my work-supplied Thinkpad T430, a small floating scrollbar appears. When I place my pointer over it, I get that rotating circle "busy signal." It's always there, like a fly on a screen door. How do I get rid of it? [more inside]

Win 7/ Thinkpad X1 Unexpected Shutdown

Win7/ Thinkpad X1 problem driving me crazy - at some random time in sleep mode, my Thinkpad will reboot and give a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" message when it's back up. A Laptop To Study Monkeys By

I am looking for a relatively rugged laptop (or tablet?) that I can use for data entry, word processing, internet browsing, and music playing while in the US, and then use for data entry, arcGIS, and music playing while in the rain forest in West Africa. It would be wonderful if it was less than $700. I do not want a Mac. What should I be looking into? [more inside]

Thinkpad X200 Max Screen Resolution

At work I use a Dell Latitude 5400 on XP Pro. In it's dock - which has twin DVI outputs - it can output to a 32" and a 24" monitor at a resolution of 1920x1200 on each. I want to switch out the Dell with a Thinkpad x200 on Win7. It has a VGA output, and if I buy the dock, it too has a single VGA output. How do I determine the maximum resolution I will be able to achieve from the Thinkpad (understanding that dual monitors would not be possible), and will buying the dock enable me to achieve a larger resolution?

How feasable is a RAIF (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Flash media) on a T40 Laptop?

How would placing two (or more!) Compact flash drives in my T40 laptop and using them as a striped RAID 0 compare to installing an equivalent (PATA) SSD? Is there some other thinking-further-out-of-the-box way of getting lightning-fast disk performance into a Pentium M-class laptop? [more inside]

Laptop got wet. Now the screen is really bright.

About a month ago, I spilled some water on my laptop. So I let everything dry out. It works again, but now the screen is very bright, as if the contrast is turned way up. After searching the internet, I learned that the problem could be a damaged inverter so I ordered and installed a new one. But no dice. The screen is still really bright. Any ideas of what might be the problem? [more inside]

I just bought a used Thinkpad T61 and the e,t, and space bar keys work intermittently. The keyboard is reasonably clean and nothing is obstructing the keycaps underneath. I have taken out the keyboard and reseated the keyboard connector. Is this just a bad keyboard or should i be worried about something else? (os is linux/ubuntu)

Can I disable a firefox addon at the command-line?

I have an Thinkpad X61 that I use both at work and home. Internet at work requires a proxy while at home I have WiFi. Switching browser settings is no problem thanks to the awesome Connection Manager software that ships with the Thinkpad. But now things have become a bit complicated. I had to install FoxyProxy because some sites needed a different connection which the regular proxy couldn't handle. Now when I connect to the internet at home, I have to remember to disable foxyproxy otherwise the Internet doesn't work. Is there a way to disable the foxyproxy extension via the command line so that I can automate this process? Google isn't helping. FWIW, I have AutoIt and Autohotkey installed although I'm not really a programmer.
