I'm from out of town (Chicago), but I met a girl here in KC the other day and we've decided to go out tomorrow evening. We're both artsy types with a fondness for adventure and off-the-beaten-path entertainment. I know I could easily defer to her for suggestions, but I'd like to have a few ideas to throw out. I'm up for anything really. It doesn't have to be a proper event or anything- someplace cool to wander around or explore is fine too. Just toss it all out there!! Food suggestions are good too (she's vegetarian). Thanks!!

I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut! I'm looking for a number of new projects, skills, and interesting things that I can learn or work on. I'm planning on trying out something new every week, dedicating a number of hours to learning new things, embarking on interesting projects and otherwise doing things I wouldn't normally do. I love hands on tasks, making things, cooking and unusual skills. I'm not interested in anything like performance art.

All suggestions welcomed

So far my list includes :

Learning to tie a range of different knots.
Building a solar food dehydrator
How to start a fire without matches or a lighter
Juggling
Make an article of clothing from scratch
Making cheese
Build a kinetic sculpture for my back yard
Build a crystal set radio
Learning how to whistle
Using templates and a pressure washer to clean the path outside my house, leaving decorative patterns of unwashed concrete.
Writing a song.
Learning to solder properly and making an electronic something.

So, any ideas welcomed!

What to do in Louisville, KY this weekend? I'm heading up to Louisville on Thursday and staying through the weekend. Is there anything awesome of note I should investigate? I know about the Downs, and there's the Garvin Gates Blues Festival going on as well. Are there any interesting nightclubs or evening spots worth looking into for the counterculturally-minded? Art exhibits going on? Awesome places to get awesome food I can't eat anywhere else? I'll have days to fill, give me the lowdown!

Good Vibrations : San Francisco :: ________ : Portland, Oregon (and other reasons to fall in love with Portland) I'll be visiting Portland next week (Sunday-Thursday), and since I'm from a small, vibratorless town, I figured I'd take advantage of the visit to a large city to give myself a nice birthday present.

Other, non- adult toy store Portland suggestions are also welcome, though I see that they have been covered before. I'll be on a bicycle, and I have a preference for inexpensive non-touristy suggestions. Tell me of your favorite small little vegetarian restaurant, the comfiest fair/direct-trade coffee shop, your favorite park, that infamous house on the corner of streets A and B that I should walk past to appreciate for reason C, awesome local events/gatherings X, Y, or Z that I should know about that are happening this particular week?

Just moved my boyfriend into a new apartment, and he will be unable to afford cable tv for quite awhile. As admitted boob toob junkies, we are quickly running out of things to do when we just feel like being around the house. Suggestions of fun and relatively budget friendly (under $30 to accomplish, preferably with a re-usability factor) activities to do at home, without the magical box. I live about 5 minutes away in my parents house, and we are getting sick of hanging out there, or having to go out (and thus spending money) when we get sick of sitting in his technology free pad. He has: no internet, no cable for at least 3-4 months (but we will be getting a free 35" tv in the coming weeks), minimal cell phone service in the apartment, minimal kitchen (2 burners, a toaster oven, and 1 old cruddy microwave that I'm afraid will give me cancer if I use it), but a very large living space/bedroom. The apartment is in the basement of a house, and has a large walk out patio area as well.

We do have my laptop, and have been subsisting largely on a dvd of 7 or 8 assembled Star Trek TNG episodes and season 1 of Flight of the Conchords. We have very few other dvds, but enjoy watching movies and would also appreciate suggestions of used dvd merchants or something of the like. When we eventually get sick of watching those, we have been known to just sit around and drink beer and talk, or just sit there in silence which is really pathetic.

We are both 23, and enjoy lots of off the wall kinds of activities but due to stress at my home and job, my usually creative brain is running on E. Please help us with some ideas of things to do on a budget with little to no technology...the crazier the better, we're up for anything and aren't afraid to act like children. To be specific, we are looking for at home/in the yard activities.

Going to Auburn and Birmingham, AL for a wedding...Oh the possibilities! Yes, another "going to x, what should I do" thread. Well I like them.

I'm going to a high school friend's wedding in Alabama, with my girlfriend (who is even better friends with my high school friend). I've lived in southern CA for 10 years and I hear its going to be a culture shock (which is exciting). I'll be in Auburn and Birmingham for 4 days. I'm sure that much of my time will be occupied by wedding related activities, but I'm looking for interesting things to do in the downtime. This can include any range of things...touristy attractions? local hotspots? cultural centers? museums? historical sites? and for my foodie-ness, great restaurants or health-food stores/co-ops? Anything I should generally keep in mind whilst there?

While we're at it, is there anything I should keep in mind to prepare for the wedding stuff? My girlfriend is a maid of honor and will likely have some associated responsibilities/obligations. I'm going to the groom's bachelor party (never been to one before). I've met him once (we hung out for a couple days because our girlfriends were visiting each other).

This is the first wedding I'll have attended for a couple of my age (23...I think the bride/groom are each either 22, 23 or 24), so its a different and exciting perspective. Thank you for your advice!

Moving to Long Island: what should I know? I am about to move to Port Jefferson. What do I need to know about the area? I would love to know about any cool places to visit (and places to avoid), events, restaurants & cafes, and anything else you think is important to know. I would love to hear about any local parks with walking paths, hiking trails, etc.

In general - what are your favorite - and least favorite - things about this area, and what do you think I should know? All advice welcome!

What's awesome in Annapolis? So the lady and are taking a little trip tomorrow afternoon from D.C., and having never been to Annapolis, thought about giving it a shot (bay view also a bonus). So, any recommendations for things to do on a slightly-cooler-than-desired afternoon out there? Saw an old thread, but didn't quite cut what we're looking for. Hole in the wall with awesome food? Things of the non-touristy to see? Places to kill some time?

Yeah, it's going to be St. Valentines' Day, so classy joints are probably out, as I'm sure their reservation-ed out.

What to do in Boise, ID?

If I only go to Boise, ID once in my life what MUST I do there to get the Boise experience? I am going on a business trip to Boise, ID from 11/10-11/13 (my office sends me to the nicest of places...). Google shows me a penitentiary for sightseeing and a golf course, neither of which really interest me.

My interests run to sightseeing, theater, or general tourist-y stuffs.

I'm not really a fan of museums unless they're really special. Same for zoos, etc.

I'm very into photography, especially nature photography if there's anything really scenic. I'm also a foodie if there's some great place to eat while I'm there.

Entertain me in Sao Paulo

Potential six-hour downtime in San Jose, CA. Conditions apply... It looks like I'll be stuck in San Jose for around six hours next Friday. The conditions are that I almost surely won't have a car, and will be relying on VTA bus and light rail to get around. I'm up for the whole spectrum of activities, from doing touristy things, to having sitting around time at a coffee shop or bookstore. Lunch will probably need to happen sometime in this time range (starting around 11am. I need to be at the airport shortly before 6pm).

I'm aware of this old thread, but most of the options in that thread involve car-travel.

Get me a second date!

First date activities in Houston...a couple of caveats, though... I've got a first-date-meetup-type thing with a person I met on $InternetDatingSite, and while I've been in Houston for two years (and she lives in Conroe/works in Houston), I am racking my brain trying to find something unique enough that she probably hasn't done it, but nothing to involved or complicated.

I want to stay away from the "go out to eat+movies" type things, though, interesting food places near activities are welcomed suggestions.

Another caveat: it's gotta be available after 6PM on Monday (tomorrow).

I'll be in Dayton (actually Kettering) OH for one day at the beginning of April. I could drive up to the Cleveland area to visit my son, but I'll be doing that anyway 2 weeks later. What should I do? Don't mind driving up to an hour or so, as previous threads on the topic seem to indicate that the best thing to do in the Dayton area is to drive through it on your way somewhere else. I like museums, local color, historic sites, nature.

Moving to Seattle, where is the good food and the interesting neighborhoods for anything and everything? Moving to a place where I know no one and do not have a clear layout of the land. My girlfriend and her girlfriends are going to see the Spice Girls at the O2 Arena in London tonight, and I've been invited to drive them there. I'm not going to the show, so what is there in the area that I can do between, say, 6pm and 10pm? I would've liked to go to the National Maritime Museum but it's closed at that time of night, as most things seem to be.

Is it safe to go walking around the area with my camera?

I don't know anybody in London and there'll be nobody else with me. My fallback plan is to sit in the car and hum Spanish Flea to myself, so I'm pretty desperate.

Non-Food Things to do in Denver? My girlfriend and I are taking a long weekend vacation to Denver in the middle of December, and need a few more ideas of things to do while we're there.

So far we plan on the Art Museum, and Natural History Museum, and the 16th Street Mall. There have to be some gems in there that we're missing.

We'll have a car to get around, so anything cool in the surrounding area would be great.

I checked the older questions, but I found food recommendations mainly, and ideas we've already gone over.

Is there anything awesome to do in Hilton Head, SC for someone that's not interested in golf, or tennis, and who is well... not retried? Alright, so I've searched a few results, and found mixed answers to my quandry. I'll be in Hilton Head this weekend, as a mini vacation.. Long story how it ended up being there, but nonetheless. I'm looking for something cool to do in HH, or even around SC, since I'm going there and like I said, not interested in the golf scene. I'm young and single and love a great bar or place to relax at, so I'm open to suggestions! I'm also a history buff, so that might be something to consider as well if there's some cool historical things around the area that I can do when I'm not on the beach. Bonus if they're single-person friendly, as I'll be on a solo adventure!

Settling in to New Orleans

I've recently broken off a 2-year relationship and come to New Orleans as a disaster relief worker (housing inspector). I'll be here for 6 months or might move permanently if things work out. I need help finding places to go, things to do and nice people to meet to help take my mind away from the old life and begin anew. I'm 31. I came to New Orleans from Austin, where I enjoyed the hiking, watersports, music, bookstores and cool shops and restaurants. I've had to leave my awesome dog behind, but may be able to bring him over after I find a more permanent house. I'm borrowing a place down in the Bywater area for now.

I've already enjoyed doing a little of the FQ tourist bit in the crowd of strangers. I can tell I'm going to need to make some real friends before I go crazy, though. Recommendations on places to go to meet smart, interesting people around this town would be most appreciated. I've been single for about two months now, and wouldn't mind knowing where the cute, brilliant, sexy girls are hanging out, either. General recommendations on things to do here are very welcome, too.

New Year's Eve in Paris... any ideas? Girlfriend has booked our Euro Star tickets, it's my job to sort out the evening entertainment -- no trivial matter.

I went a couple of years ago, and in my naiveté ambled over to the Eiffel tower for midnight. Big mistake: champagne bottles in the air followed by huge riots. Excessively violent police response plus burnt out cars and pepper spray. Don't want to make that mistake again.

Budget is looking increasingly tight, by the way.

Escape TO L.A.

I'll be in/around L.A. for a family reunion this December 22 - 27. Help me with my reverse-Snake Plisken(sequel) mission: I need to escape from my relatives and finding cool things to do in the L.A. area... Museums, good restaurants, shopping - I am taking all possible suggestions here, as I will definitely need to escape from the family often. Extra bonus points if you know that any of your favorite attractions will be open sometime during my Xmas stay.

My wife and I are into all kinds of food, but ESPECIALLY love cheapish Mexican, Vietnamese, and Thai places - so any favorite taquerias or other spots would be appreciated. We also would love to see any non-touristy old-school LA places (diners, random weird museums, etc). Comic book stores? Cool neighborhoods? Crazy landmarks? We will be renting a car (so we can drive to random places in the vicinity), and have little-to-no advance knowledge of anything fun to do in Los Angeles.

Fun suggestions for the Greater Myrtle Beach area. I have been traveling to the greater Myrtle Beach area with my family for the better part of 20 years now and I feel like I have seen a lot of what the area has to offer. What I'd like to hear is anyone's ideas for interesting or off the beaten path places/activities/resturants/events that we should check out.

For some reference, we'll be there the week of June 17th and we stay in Garden City. We are pretty familiar with the resturants of Murrell's Inlet. In particular we have loved Bovine's and Divine's and would love to find more places to eat in this vein.

We have also ventured north to the Barefoot Landing and the Broadway at the Beach developments...There are good for a quick look see but would tend to skip them this year unless someone knows if there is something different and new that was added to the areas.

To the south, we have traveled to Brookgreen Gardens for the sculpture gardens but I don't thinK I'll e up for seeing that again so soon.

So hivemind, what shall I do next week? I leave myself in your capable hands.
