I'm currently unemployed and waiting for a school program to start. I've been having trouble finding things to do during the day so I'm not stuck home and depressed. Any ideas of what I can do to kill a whole working day's worth of time?

This coming Thursday through Tuesday I will be in Madison, WI. Unexpectedly, because other plans fell through, I find myself with the whole weekend open for doing anything. Turns out we will have a few free hours next Wednesday (4/23) afternoon in NYC after an appointment and before the bus ride home. Can you suggest interesting things to do for folks who've seen most of the major museums multiple times, like to stroll but not hike, are comfortable with the subway, and are nerdy? Probably don't have time to take train or bus to outer boroughs, unfortunately, otherwise we'd probably just head to the Brooklyn Botanical gardens and look at the flowering trees, which must be revving up about now. Additional points for good but not super expensive restaurants on Upper East or Midtown East to have lunch after the appointment, like all kinds of ethnic foods but avoid pork. Many thanks; I've been looking though lots of listings but always get a bit overwhelmed by Time Out and the like.
Looking for good, reasonably priced, activity dates in the NYC area. What do you do when you're not doing dinner and a show? Hands-on is preferred - active rather than passive activities. [more inside]

So, spouse and I snagged an invitation to the "Man of Steel" premier (at Lincoln Center) and after-party in New York. But, I've never been to New York and don't have a clue about the place. I have a couple of questions. I've tentatively booked a room at the Empire Hotel (price and location, along with reviews seemed reasonable), my question for you folks is: Is there a compelling reason why I SHOULDN'T stay there? And, if the answer to that is "Do Not Stay There!!!", what other options are there (close to Lincoln Center, room cost $300 per night or less)? The second half of the question is: I'll have from Saturday evening (June 8th) until later afternoon on Monday to experience New York... What should we do?
What are the most fun things to do in Melbourne on holiday? I've got 4 days as a solo female traveller in my 30s. I'm not into footy but open to shopping, good places to eat (cheaply), cultural things and tourist attractions. Inspire me!

Dobbs and I are going to Los Angeles from Dec 15 - 23rd. I'm from out of town (Chicago), but I met a girl here in KC the other day and we've decided to go out tomorrow evening. We're both artsy types with a fondness for adventure and off-the-beaten-path entertainment. I know I could easily defer to her for suggestions, but I'd like to have a few ideas to throw out. I'm up for anything really. It doesn't have to be a proper event or anything- someplace cool to wander around or explore is fine too. Just toss it all out there!! Food suggestions are good too (she's vegetarian). Thanks!!
