Replacement eyeglasses 1.67 Super Thin High-Index Lenses

What happens to my eyeglass lenses overtime? I buy replacement eyeglass lenses from an online company using my old frames and 1.67 Super Thin High-Index Lenses. After about a year of use the lenses suddenly get splotchy and clouded. I use only a soft cotton cloth (an old t-shirt) to clean them. It's not scratched. I don't get any anti glare or scratch resistant coatings applied when purchasing a new pair. I've used 2 different companies with the same result.
Am I doing something wrong or is one year the life expectancy of 1.67 Super Thin High-Index Lenses?

Dress the 28-year-old grad student.

Where should I be shopping for clothes? 28-year-old straight guy. Long, thin torso; long arms; wide shoulders; ~5'11''; ~165 lbs; USA; East coast/access to NY; athletic and muscled but borderline thin; and a graduate student budget. Clothing has been the bane of my existence for a very long time. I'll spare you the back story. In any case, I spend most of my time slouched in front of a computer, and I can get away with being an unshaven, sweat-shirted mess. That's both because of the culture here and because I'm relatively good looking.

But, for work, campus, and nightlife, I'd like to look a little bit nicer, even a lot nicer (because I think I could pull it off if I tried), but without looking too stiff, and without looking like I'm trying too hard. I feel like it would make me more comfortable and the people around me more comfortable. I think everything hangs funny on me because of my body shape, but that's probably my problem. (Many people have commented that I look like a sculpture when I'm naked, and that it's totally unapparent with my clothing on. See top again for body description.) Also, most of the people around me are a few years younger, and I don't want to dress too old in order to keep up the rapport. (That being said, I try to date people my age or a little older.)

I hate hipsters, cynicism, sarcasm, angst, and drinking the kool-aid. But irony, post-postmodern [sic] and "meta" anything is welcome in small doses. I want to project a friendly, approachable, effortless, laid-back competence, with a bit of an edgy edge, and I really, really don't want to look like I'm trying too hard or trying to be stylish.

I shave once or twice a week, and I'm hoping I can put stuff together that can handle that look. Can any of the above work a little bit rumpled? When I don't shave, I look edgy or gross, depending on unknown factors. When I do shave I look super-clean-cut and even baby-faced, though with a strong jaw.

(I tend to shop at express men's and banana republic, just to give a sense of where I'm going right now. I pretty much own only t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jeans. I'm on a budget, but I'm willing to spend good money on durable clothing that won't go out of style.)

What should I wear? Where should I look for ideas? (What are some good first steps because, clearly, I'm trying too hard and I have an unapproachable ideal in my head--and that's why I default to t-shirts and jeans.)

Que pasa calabaza?

I love ginger snaps. I love pumpkin. How can I make pumpkin snaps? Most pumpkin cookies I have had are big and soft. I like thin and crisp cookies. For reference, my favorite cookies are ginger snaps or thinthinthin sugar cookies that are crisp around the edges.

Perhaps a ginger snap is close enough to the pumpkin-pie flavor, but I seem to have a finely-honed snap sensibility-- I want the rounder and more organic flavor of the pumpkin.

Any recipes or ideas?

Skinny jeans for a big butt?

My best beloved wants a pair of jeans she can wear her boots over top of. She can't seem to find a pair that fits right... How weird is this? I'm asking style advice for my bride-to-be, because she's too shy to ask anyone herself.

She has a body shape that has blessed her with an ample bottom, but exceptionally slender legs. She's not heavy at all... she's got hourglass curves like a 40's pinup.

She likes the look of knee-high boots over tight jeans (as do I, hence my eagerness to ask this question on her behalf) but the jeans that fit her are all boot-cut or wide leg, and don't look right with boots zipped up over them. Skinny leg jeans that accommodate her hips are too loose around the waist and downright baggy around the legs.

Are there any brands/styles that are designed to fit her bodyshape? She's not prepared to shell out megabucks for this, either. (She has a boot addiction to feed.)

One key, one wallet, one problem: how?

How do I securely carry a single key in my wallet? I've started carrying a single housekey in my wallet because my keychain is overladen with keys that it won't fit in any of my pockets without stabbing me or looking like a tumor. However, since the key is loose in the wallet pocket, it has a tendency to move around, and several times it has fallen out when I open my wallet, so far I haven't lost it, but it's bad enough when it happens.

Is there any way of securing the housekey in the wallet? I remember that there were some emergency car keys which were embedded into a plastic card, and it could be popped out: is there something similar for a generic housekey? Like a card-size object that holds one key, easily removable but secure?

I've spent a lot of time slimming down my wallet (made out of tyvek, only four cards carried) so carrying something like a dedicated key wallet would add an unnecessary amount of bulk.

Thin client terminal hardware problems

I am looking to replace some thin-client terminals on our W2K Small Business server running terminal services over RDP. We haven't had much luck with our existing terminal hardware (Compucon Phoenix - the power supplies burn out far too often) so I am looking for something simple, hardy and (of course) not too expensive. We have a 15-terminal, single location set up, connected to a single server running W2K SBS. We are situated in a developing country - hot, humid, dusty, with dirty power and extremely inquisitive ants, and little (if any) IT budget. We are happy with the server set-up (stable and running largely problem free for four years), but it is the terminals that are letting us down. The proprietary (?) power supplies for the Phoenix terminals give up the ghost on a regular basis, and I am sick of spending AU$150 each time to replace them (plus the hassle of having them shipped from Australia - no easy task). We currently have five terminals out of action, and I am weighing up whether we might be better off moving to different brand of terminal. Old technology is fine, but fewer moving parts might be better. Perhaps an external power supply (as for laptops) would be a good idea, so the terminal could be sealed to prevent ant and dust intrusion. Re-purposing old PCs might be a short-term option, but they are likely to have much greater issues with component failure.

I am not an IT person, although I am (unfortunately) the IT person. I assume (hopefully correctly) that it is okay to mix-and-match a different brand of terminal with our existing set-up. We have little money to spend.

Any assistance/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I need corduroy!

Where can I find wide-wale corduroy pants to fit leggy thin me? I really like wide-wale corduroy pants. But I have been searching in vain for ones that fit me for the past four years. Thin-wale jeans-style corduroys exist, but the warm fuzzy wear-to-work kind? Invisible to my eye.

I need pants with a waist around 27-28", inseam at least 33". In girl-fashion-land this seems to often equate to a size 4 Tall, depending on the maker. I am willing to purchase corduroys made for men, but finding them in waist sizes smaller than 32" seems impossible.

So, anybody know where they've been hiding?

How do you naturally thin people eat?

I'm trying to find out how naturally thin people eat, so I can see if I can model some of my new habits after them. I'm also very curious (as someone with dysfunctional eating habits) just what is "normal" to some people. So...are you naturally thin/average in terms of weight? What is your typical day like in terms of meals and snacks? More specifically, I'm interested in:

1) What's your typical breakfast?
2) What's your typical lunch?
3) What are some typical dinners?
4) Do you eat differently on the weekends than you do on weekdays?
5) Do you snack? If so, how often and on what?
6) Do you eat differently on holidays? How so?
7) If you've eaten a bigger than usual meal, do you adjust your next meals at all?
8) What do you do if you find that you've put on a few pounds?
9) Do you exercise? If so, how & how often?
10) Do you use artificial sweeteners? In what situations & how often?
11) What beverages do you drink? Do you drink diet versions of soft drinks?

Also please feel free to let me know anything else about your daily diet / exercise that you think might be useful or interesting!

Thanks!

The skinny on shirts for the skinny, please.

Where might one find inexpensive, stylish button-down shirts if one happened to be a very skinny guy? I am 6" 1' and weigh about 155 pounds, give or take -- I wear size medium American Apparel tee shirts. Most button-down shirts I can buy off the rack are tailored for a huskier sort of guy than I happen to be.

I'm looking for shirts that can do double-duty -- semi-dressy work shirts when tucked in and worn with a belt, casual when untucked and worn with jeans or shorts. Recommendations? Shirts I can order online are preferred.

Sleep/eye mask: Thin, comfy, durable?

Find me a good, thin eye mask for sleeping that would allow me to sleep on my stomach comfortably. I'm kind of addicted to eye masks for sleeping, but I don't really like the ones I own. I got one of these, which is nice, except it's too thick to sleep on my stomach, it's a little rigid (so I need to put the strap way above my ears to align the thing such that it doesn't let in light from the bump created by my nose), and the velcro straps are a bit plasticy and hard.

Anyone know of a very thin, comfortable, possibly silk mask, that blocks out light from every side, and has a fastening system that is somehow as comfortable as thin elastic straps, but as durable as a velcro or buckling-type fastener? (I've been a fan of some of the better airline masks, but I'm hoping to find something that doesn't fall apart in a month or so)

Anyone have lasEk surgery?

Anyone out there have lasEk eye surgery? I have thin corneas, (less than about 480 microns) that precludes me from traditional lasIk surgery. I've been to two laser centers in our moderate city (200k population). Both tried to steer me into PRK - stating my corneal thickness prevented laser. My understanding from newsgroups and Lasek websites is that anyone who is a canidate for PRK is also a candidate for Lasek. Am I wrong? My thinking is that due to the limited number of folks who would get Lasek, and the specialized training it may need- no one in my small city wants to learn how to do it. Anyone have experience with lasEk? Thin corneas?
