our dad needs some help

My siblings and I are trying to find kinds of therapy for my dad, in dealing with the death of our mom/his spouse 17 years ago. He's still very very emotional about any discussion of her, and has never talked to a "professional" about it. Ideas suggestions for types of therapy, and recommendations in the Washington DC area. Why is psychoanlaysis still around?

Freud and his followers have been thoroughly discredited for quite a while now. Our scientific understanding of the brain has grown by leaps and bounds since their heyday, and we now have treatment methods that are cheaper, quicker, and more effective than anything psychoanalysis had to offer. So why is psychoanalysis still practiced? [more inside]

Help me help my brother.

My brother has his head up his butt and I want to help him remove it. As his sibling and one of his only friends, I wish to provide him the best advice possible. So my questions are these: 1) What is a constructive thing to say to a sibling who wants a divorce for all the wrong reasons, 2) How do you get someone into counseling when they don't believe in it? and 3) How does one go about finding a very specific kind of counselor? He'd be best served and less apt to argue with a strong, smart father-figure. [more inside]

Coping emotionally until I get professional help

I know I need therapy, and I intend to get it as soon as my health insurance comes through in a few weeks. I'm under a lot of strain from a pending divorce and various related financial issues. I'm not just depressed, but I have the attention span of a gnat and I get caught in horrible, tormenting chains of obsessive thoughts. This is really crippling my ability to work and bill my customers, leading to more financial stress, leading to more emotional stress, etc. What solid things can I do in the short term to focus, work and get things done without pacing, obsessing and crying a lot? Help me help my boyfriend

Help me help my boyfriend. My boyfriend is caring, supportive and great in all the ways that matter, but I think he's depressed, and it's gotten past the point where he's willing to talk about it.
