I don't have health insurance right now, but I do get an allowance through work to go toward a private, individual plan. I haven't purchased a plan quite yet, and I'm wondering if seeing a therapist now might cause problems for me later. I also don't understand how pre-existing conditions are defined when it comes to mental health issues. (I live in Washington state.) [more inside]

A while ago, I asked about the implications of accessing mental health care and possibly having a diagnosis tied to me. From the answers, I've concluded that in my specific situation, any help I need will have to be "off the record." Because that's my decision, this has made it hard to obtain care. How do I go about finding it anyway? [more inside]

I have a friend who suffers from anxiety and panic disorder. She currently sees a therapist, but is interested in a more structured approach. Does anyone have a recommendation for a female therapist in Austin, TX who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? I would also be interested in getting recommendations for brief inpatient programs.

How did you know that you wanted to be a therapist? What made you feel that you could do it? What doubts did you have, and how did you deal with them? If you changed your mind, what persuaded you to do so? What would you tell someone if they were considering becoming a therapist? [more inside]

what should i take to a psychiatrist? i'm 33, have recently separated from work, never had a relationship and am seeing him for depression. i've had four sessions, and he's asking me to bring in things so he gets a better idea of who i am. i didn't think to ask what (i will) but i figure creative things eg: my folio with paintings/drawings/artwork is a start. what would you recommend?

I think I need to see a therapist (psychological) and I live in San Francisco. I have a history of depression, however, I have never had a therapist here in US. I would like a recommendation on a good therapist in SF as well as what to expect in terms of cost (I have a medical insurance) [more inside]

The spouse and I would like to go to counseling together - not because of any problems in our relationship, but because we both have issues with being forthcoming in individual therapy and in initiating a dialogue with the therapist. We figure that if we went together, we could enable each other to open up and at the very least support each other through what is (for us anyway) an unpleasant experience. (And if it makes us a happier couple, that's just a nice side effect.) Does anyone have any experience with this sort of arrangement? Should we pursue someone who specializes in marriage counseling, or someone who specializes in individual therapy? We each have psychiatrists and are on medication for anxiety and depression - this is talk or cognitive therapy we're talking about. Thanks!

I recently went to a therapist for the first time ever, for a screening for ADD. She told me that I had a severely traumatic childhood because of things like "My father wasn't around much." I don't feel severely traumatized... Is she crazy? [more inside]

ShrinkFilter: I've been increasingly stressed, self-loathing and distracted for years, and (since my spouse and I are having a baby in a few months) have decided I need to Get Professional Help--mostly to figure out what's wrong with me and deal with it, so I don't pass it on to our kid. But "professional help" is a very big category, and I need to narrow it down. I want to find somebody whose perspective is "let's figure out the big problems and how you can fix them, as efficiently as possible," rather than "there's nothing wrong with you that years of expensive chatting can't prolong." I'd also like to avoid medication. How do I find the right... therapist? counselor? I don't even know what the right word is.

A relatively shy MeFi member (and you know I'd admit it if it was me) is looking for advice on finding a good psychatrist in the Los Angeles area. More interested in talking therapy than medication, though not ruling anything out.
