Asking for a friend--
Can anyone recommend a therapist for anxiety/depression in Riverdale, Inwood, or nearby Westchester? No particular approach preferred, although approaches like CBT that have some literature supporting their efficacy would be better.

People don't change. If accepting that reality is the way to peace, how do I reconcile it with being married to someone with whom I'm incompatible in fundamental ways? (I am committed to this marriage because we have a young child who means the world to me and needs me.) Do I need to stop believing there could be core change in another person's outlook on life?

Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression - How does that work? I went to a doctor about my anxiety issues and she gave me a referral to a psychiatrist to get some anti-anxiety meds as she did not feel comfortable prescribing them. (She didn't give me a name, I have to call my insurance to get a list or something I guess. Also, she gave me a no refill xanax prescription after I begged.) I am somewhat bewildered by this as I didn't expect to have to go to a psychiatrist so I have some questions.

"You can't get over this unless you really want to." Do I not want to? I need to want to, and I'm a self-sabotaging ball of nonsense. Have therapist and group therapy, intake appointment for medication on two days, feeling like I'm maybe just making it all up. Or I'm using my intelligence to pull one over on either my therapist, or myself.

I may be starting adult attachment therapy in the next week, on the advice of a crisis counselor and after a few years of on-and-off treatment for anxiety and depression that's not getting me very far. Point me to some quality, hopefully easy to find resources that can spell out what the experience might be like.

Please recommend me a psychiatrist and therapist in the Dallas area who 'specialize' in anxiety/dysthymic disorders. I don't have severe anxiety to the point where I'm a hermit or anything. I like to think of my self as a very functional social phobic. But the anxiety is still there enough to rear its ugly head. For example, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to connect with people as I get older. I've lived in Texas my entire life and all my best friends moved away after college. I haven't been able to develop friendships that are as strong as the ones I had in high school and college.

I've been trying to convince my anxiety-afflicted Mom to get therapy for ages. She finally said that if I were to buy her a book, she would promise to read it, and perhaps that would lead to finally giving therapy a shot. She's pushing 70 and has to deal with a new addition to the family who is aggressive and toxic, so I think its urgent for her to get a better handle on her mental state.

For much of my life I dealt with rather severe depression and anxiety, which I've recently overcome with nearly 3 years of therapy. I'm 24 years old, trying to find a meaningful career that's more than just a paycheck. At this point, all I want to do is be a therapist. I want to help others the way that I've been helped. However, another issue I've been working to overcome is crippling social anxiety. It's gotten much better; I hardly consider myself shy anymore. Still, though, I'm not sure if I have the warm, trust-inspiring personality a therapist should have. Could I be a successful therapist if I'm far quieter and more reserved than the norm? I do love people and want to help, but sometimes I might not come across that way. Can a shy person be a good therapist?
