I need to see a therapist but I have NO idea how to find one. I live in Brooklyn and would go anywhere in Queens/Brooklyn/Manhattan (but mid/down town and northeast Brooklyn would be best.) I would prefer to see a woman, maybe someone who specializes in emotionally abusive relationships. I have Oxford insurance but I dont know if that even covers therapy. I could pay up to $100 a session out of pocket, I guess. I need to see someone as soon as possible. [more inside]
OK, AskMe, around these parts we know and love the advice to get therapy. It's great advice! But what about the 201-level advice? Once you get yourself into therapy, how do you get the most out of it? I'm curious to hear some MeFite wisdom. What has made your experience with therapy richer and more helpful? Give me your practical tips, and tell me about mindsets and attitudes that you have found to be helpful (or not helpful). [more inside]

My only real experience with mental health practitioners was a brief stint with my free university counseling where I tried one or two medications for anxiety and depression. They didn't do anything for me and I became disheartened and left the idea behind for the past few years. Having gotten health insurance for the first time a few months ago and after some recent introspection, I've found myself interested in possibly trying some anti-anxiety/depression medication again, as well as some sort of ongoing psychotherapy. I've been seeing the same therapist, mostly once a week, for a little over two years. I feel like we're going around in circles. It may be me (it probably is), but he's been very patient and flexible with me on a variety of issues (including financial--he's not covered by my insurance.) What's the most respectful to say adieu and jump ship [more inside]
My ongoing problems with my therapist have reached a head, but she is urging me not to leave. Having received humane and insightful responses from AskMeFi about another MH issue, I would really appreciate some perspective on this. [more inside]

I don't have health insurance right now, but I do get an allowance through work to go toward a private, individual plan. Austin Therapist Recommendations: A friend is looking for a therapist to work through some issues. He wants someone who is active in conversation and is willing to confront him on things when necessary. He's had therapists in the past who were nice but too passive, and just listened more than they offered ideas and suggestions. The ideal therapist would listen without judging but would help stimulate new ideas and change in his life. Do you know of anyone like this?
