Looking for a basic starter book on capitalism and democracy that explains their relationship and, if possible, perhaps explores other systems or changes that could be an improvement on the current systems in place in most developed nations. I have read that capitalism is a good way to stimulate a young nations economy but that it is not necessarily an equitable or functional long term solution. I have some small understanding regarding corporations roles in democracy. Beyond these basics I'm rather lost. (hence the plan to explore further) I would prefer to read books as I would rather utilize them, and my library, than pop from webpage to webpage but would be willing to consider any information. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I'm writing a paper on (animated) GIFs and am trying to track down some of the most (in)famous. I suppose I am talking memes, but I'm more interested in the GIF as an archaeological reference point. I frequent sites like dump.fm, tumblr etc. so am quite tuned in to the glitchy/kitschy side of GIF culture. How theoretical have people got on these wonders of the web? How does one trace the history of an animated GIF? [more inside]
I finished reading Richard Belzer's hilarious book UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe and it has gotten me interested in the JFK assassination. I then looked at a YouTube video that basically used a computer sim that showed the shooting coming from the book depository. My main question: Can any mefite recommend a book or three (of the million written) on the subject that they enjoy and find convincing on the assassination? I am open to any suggestions. Feel free to share your thoughts on the subject.

Types of Games: I have come across various attempts to catalogue the possible varieties of stories that exist. The basic assumption being that all plots (narratives?) can be be boiled down to one among only a few types e.g. Hero leaves the kingdom; Hero steals fire, etc. I am looking for a similar classification system for GAMES, that is: how many fundamental types/kinds of game are there? What is the best way to master scales, chords, and chord progressions on the piano / keyboard. More specifically, help me create harmony and melody. My husband and I are starting to create music on our computer. I think I have a pretty good ear for what sounds good, but I feel like a complete hack on the keyboard. I would like to become proficient at hitting keys that sound well together or next to each other. I am studying basic theory, but where does the rubber meet the road? Is it simply muscle memory? I am not really interested in playing a piece of sheet music, but if that will help, I will learn. I just want to create my own music. I know I have to practice, but practice doing what? I would be rather proud of myself if someone told me drop and play I V vi IV in F Major and I could do it without thinking.
Sacrifice, speech, writing and art: I am interested in the different ways in which a sacrifice, a sacrament, a spoken word and a written word act as signifiers. Browsing today's newspapers here in Scotland it would seem that there is an anti-Scottish feeling pervading the whole of the USA after the compassionate release of the Pan-Am bomber last week. Question1: Am I right in thinking that this is the case, or is it just right wing neo-con nonsense eminating from the Fox News stable?
