We are looking for a small city without cold winters that has a large body of water - no inland towns for us- and is vibrant, cultured and intelligent. We have lived in LA, NY and Miami and are now in Durham, Nc - finding it too woodsy and land locked and way to hot in the summer here. We both work and are in our early sixties.
I'd like to make an Escape-The-Room type game for some friends and need puzzle / storyline suggestions. [more inside]
Last night I was watching the Arrow, an admittedly ridiculous show that requires some suspension of disbelief, but this episode showed some legal procedures I didn't understand was possible. [more inside]
I recent watched and loved All the President's Men. Journalists chasing the truth, 1970's aesthetic, Redford and Hoffman, it had lots of appealing aspects. I then saw and liked (but did not love), Three Days of the Condor. What similar films should I search out ?
I have a son who has struggled to find books that he likes. Over the holiday break he picked up The Martian by Andy Weir and devoured it! What other books have the same feel? [more inside]
Hi, I'm trying to put together a week of lectures on Women in Refrigerators for my students and I have gone and found Gail Simone's old list and looked at Feminist Frequency's episodes for Bitch Magazine, and I have some passages from a myth textbook and Joseph Campbell's work. But I want to add one of my favorite podcasts, On the Media. I vaguely remember the host Brooke Gladstone talking to a guest once and she says that when she was younger and she remembers watching those old black and white movies like Perils of Pauline she remembers there being something vaguely erotic or sexual about the way that the evil villains would tie up the damsels in distress and leave them on the railroad tracks, and she may have said she wrote her masters thesis on it? But I can't find a thesis on Proquest or JStor that Brooke published, anyone with a fantastic memory?
After upgrading my Mac home theater computer to El Capitan, when I try to screen share from a client machine that's still running Snow Leopard, it passes the connection through to Chicken of the VNC instead of using the screen sharing that's built into the OS. Is there any way to fix this short of updating the client machine to a newer version of the OS? [more inside]
My 4 month old sweet little girl decided about 2 weeks ago she didn't want to sleep her usual 5-7 hours through the night, and now wakes up every hour or two needing help getting back to sleep, and it's killing me :( Our bedtime routine consist of bottle, bath, then rock until she's asleep at between 7-8 pm. She would sleep until 1-3 am for a feed and then sleep again until 6-7am...not anymore and it's continued for a couple weeks. She uses a pacifier which is the biggest culprit, and she is still swaddled. It's a vicious cycle, re-swaddle her tight, the paci falls out she wakes up crying, or even the paci will still be in and she will drop it just waking up grunting and wiggling around and then it falls out. She is a very active sleeper, I feel like she's trying to get out of the swaddle all night. Usually I have to pick her up and rock her back to sleep or get up to pat her back put the paci back in. "Over the meadow and through the woods to grandmother's house we don't go". We're taking Thanksgiving on the road this year--perhaps a little more thankful of family if we get away from them for a while! Renting a house w/Mrs. Moth and two teenage Moth-ettes near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. We need ideas, efficiencies and even recipes for making the best possible Thanksgiving Dinner with the least fuss as well as any hints about what to do in the local area, how most memorably to spend our time together, etc. This is probably a once-in-a-lifetime in-law-less holiday for us all... The US military follows a time honored tradition of retiring and destroying damaged US flags. That protocol is outlined in US Code, Title 4, Chapter 1 which (link) outlines the disposing of such flags in a manner that shows respect for the flag and the service it has provided. Yet, I frequently see people flying very damaged flags in very prominent locations. [more inside]
Hey Brilliant People, happy Monday! I'm looking for film, tv, novel, play, etc. examples of women heros who are fighting against sexual predators especially ones who are doing it in secret? Like super heros! Can anyone think of a character like that? Thanks so much!
Hi - I'm being interviewed for a job and am being given the choice of day, from Mon - Thurs, so was wondering if the research shows whether one day of the week is better than another?
I think it's Bruce. I think he's wearing a denim jacket. He's raging against OR telling the young people to rage against the impending onset of liking jazz that happens when one ages.
I'm curious to know your stories, or what it is that keeps you happy in the relationship you are in? Also is it possible to grow in love with a person when you are in a happy relationship? Before I confused love with infatuation and I don't want to go through that again! [more inside]
In The Searchers, was there a scene where Ethan (John Wayne) finds some freed white women who have been rescued from the Comanche? If so do you know why this scene is not in the DVD (or at least not in all DVDs) of the film? BONUS POINTS for pointing out the time of the scene on youtube. NOTE: I am NOT asking about the rescue of Debbie, but rather of an episode in the middle of Ethan and Marty's search for Debbie. I am also not asking about Scar's wives in the scene with Debbie, nor about Laurie.
Recently separated after long but loveless marriage. Re-conected with an old colleague. Like her a lot. (I'm wise enough to differentiate btw a rebound and the real thing). Don't want to hide this relationship to friends and acquaintances. But she's worried about my kids running into us together and she doesn't want to be 'the (perceived) other woman' in their eyes. How do I help quell her fears or is she right? [more inside]
As of this writing, North Korea has had two Internet outages in 48 hours. A lot of people seem to watch when Internet service goes down for countries and companies. But I don't recall anyone saying North Korea's Internet had gone down until within the last couple of days. Has anyone reported North Korea's Internet going down in the past?
Of course I am referring to the BBC version of the show here. I am currently rewatching the series and a few scenes stuck out to me as kind of bizarrely sexist and lewd, in a way that goes above and beyond the usual bounds of a comedy. If there wasn't some bit of truth to these scenes I can't imagine they would have worked that well as jokes in the first place, so I ask thee who have worked in that culture... [more inside]

Is there a way to ignore how you feel and just get things done regardless of whether you feel like doing it or not? I don't understand why I am having such a hard time doing the things that I used to do? I used to be able to get a lot of things done, and now I find myself resisting almost all the time. Is there a way to just stop paying attention to the fact that you don't feel good or that you are scared or a number of other emotions?

Im up here at the tip of the iceberg of Philly Soul with The Spinners, The Delfonics, Blue Magic, etc. but I want to dig deeper into this stuff and find some bands/songs/records that I might not encounter otherwise, since history has a way of remembering the big stuff and forgetting some of the amazing but less well known stuff. So help me down the rabbit hole here if you please to find even more music in that vein.

I remember a song from around 2008 that was tagged the bravery- time wont let you go. Ive basically listened to both their sun and moon album but its not one of those songs. It starts with a strong piano and and its kinda slow but the drums are prominent in the song. Its killing me and i cant find it anywhere. I can half remember it in my head and it sounds like it could be by the bravery but im not excluding similar sounding artists like the editors. Cant remember any lyrics though!

"Massive resistance" was a shameful state effort from 1956-1959 to cancel out the Brown v. Board decision. Virginia's Harry Byrd launched it, but the courts ultimately killed it off. I've heard that there was [at least one] petition or letter circulated in opposition to it, but can't find any mention of it. It would have been remarkable in the climate of the time, because signers would surely have lost their jobs. I checked several relevant websites, including that of the Southern Historical Association, but nothing even close. Is anyone familiar enough with the details of this sad chapter to have heard of such an effort?

Help me remember music videos from that magical era when bands would record theme songs for (often horror) movies that were actually lyrically about the movies themselves and the artist would sometimes appear in the video and the video would be a story video and...well you know. I've always wondered how cartoonist create their strips. But I've started to notice that many of them choose simple body shapes and repeat expressions or only use a few settings or locations. Where can I read a straightforward explanation about the how and why of the creative process for making cartoons?
The plan was to fly into Mumbai and make my way down the cost to Cochi. I just realized that my visa to India is not going to happen. I now have a 10-14 day gap. I'm leaving Tel Aviv on Feb. 3rd and staying in Kuala Lumpur on Feb. 14th, dates somewhat flexible. Where should I go? Things to know: -No countries that require anything other then VOA for a US born citizen please. -In addition to Israel and Kuala Lumpur I'm also going to Hong Kong, much of Japan, Australia and New Zealand. -Have visited western Europe and northern S. America on previous trips. Bonus points if it involves hiking, learning how to sail or involves getting to see the countryside in safety, though perhaps not comfort.
Need Epic Italian restaurant in Manhattan. This may have been asked before but restaurants change and close all the time. Relatives are coming into Manhattan this Friday from Texas (originally from Long Island) and seek "epic pizza and Italian food". I know places in Brooklyn etc so please only Manhattan. They have a family of 4 and subways to Bensonhurst would be prohibitive. Special "Awesome Points" for "hole in wall" tiny places. Mifi-ites don't let me down!
I placed an order on The Body Shop's website on Dec. 1 for cyber monday. There was some issue with shipping (where the courier company was given insufficient information, and never delivered and instead returned the package), and I never got the package that I had paid for. I have called, emailed, and tried numerous time to get in touch with a customer service person. I was on hold for more than half an hour each time, and no representative ever responded to my email. I am infuriated now-- they charged my credit card. What options do I have at this point? What can I do? I want either a refund or my order. I don't care which. [more inside]
I'm looking for recommendations for a monthly subscription club that ships live plants suitable to be replanted outside or, at a minimum, kept alive on a porch or window. Cut flowers won't work here, I want to give a gardener a steady stream of projects and surprises for 2014. Mid-Atlantic region of the east coast if it helps. Thanks you so much in advance! This is a bear of a bunch of search terms.

Without giving away my home address, I live in zip code 17837. I really would like to get OTA stations without purchasing cable or a satellite. What are my options? [more inside]
While on facebook, I saw a group photo of Catholic priests in India at St. Alphonsa's Tomb and Chapel, Bharananganam, Pala. While I am aware that it is the norm for Catholic priests in India (and some other countries considered tropical) to wear white cassocks as their street dress, and indeed, a number of the priests in the photograph were wearing them, there was something that was truly puzzling to me in spite of growing up Catholic and having attended mass and otherwise had contact with the Catholic church in two Asian countries, Japan and Thailand. In the picture of these priests gathered at this saint's tomb in southern India, there were some among them who were wearing robes or cassocks in shades of peach or puce, and light goldenrod. I have never seen priests dressed this way in any country, and I want to know if there is some special meaning to this. (For those who don't know about Catholicism, there is a lot of symbolic meaning attached to what priests and other members of the Catholic hierarchy wear, and why. There is actually a webforum devoted to people discussing what then-Pope Benedict was photographed wearing on public occasions and the philosophical and political implications of same). [more inside]
