What is a good heuristic for the usage of 'that'? I am not referring to the distinction between 'that' and 'which', but its broader conjunctive and connective use.

I find myself overusing the word, and instead of deciding whether I should omit it or not in the editing process, it'd be great if I could learn to only use it when necessary.

Any ideas?

Is my canola oil still okay to use? Hive-Mind Foodies, I need your help! I bought a gallon jug of canola oil over the weekend and, by mistake, I left it in the trunk of my car for the last two days. During those two days we have had bright sunshine with temps in the high 80's-low 90's. So my question is this: Is that oil still safe to use in food preparation? I've always read that you should store oils in a cool, dark, place so that they don't spoil, but, I'd hate to throw away such a large amount of oil if it was still alright to use. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Food poisoning! Now what? Yesterday, I ate a runny omelet, and a can of dented peaches (yes, I should have asked if I should eat it first... and either one could be the culprit...)

I've parked myself in the bathtub with a sleeping bag (for warmth and easy barf access), laptop (to google for soft/hardcore taters), and am trying furiously to keep some gatorade down. Are there any other handy tips to make the next few days less ridiculous?

Music in the background of the first 30 seconds or so of this video? It's driving me mad and I've asked everyone I know (including the video creator, to no avail.) It sounds so familiar, maybe because it sounds like an audio bed I used to use in my radio production days. But dammit if I can name it. Groinks.

Whats that song? In an advertisement featuring the Concorde, showing it taking off (in slow motion with heat fumes rising in the foreground), the ad played in the early 1990s, and the song went "(something) (something) with Jesus... the great (something) in the sky" and there was cowbell. (It sounds like ELO to me but I cant find or name the song). Thanks, Borg-mind ;)

Who sings the version of "Someone to Watch Over Me" on the latest episode of This American Life? It is incorrectly credited to, uh, Sting, on the TAL website. Between the second and third ‘acts’ of the episode, there’s a nice version of “Someone to Watch Over Me”. On the TAL website, it’s credited to Sting. He has a version of the song but it’s not this one (nor is it nearly as good).

I browsed through iTunes and eMusic, but couldn’t find anything promising. I tried a few Google searches, but unfortunately there’s another episode of TAL named “Someone to Watch Over Me”. In fact, there seems to be some weirdness, because that episode (#269) includes the same ’second act’ as the current episode.

If anybody happens to listen to it (the song is at about 45:30), let me know if you recognize the singer.

Question from a country music video, can you identify it? In the video a man has a flat tire (Driver side rear?) and an arm in a cast. Another car pulls up and a child in the back seat (of the un-damaged car) watches as his dad changes the tire of the original car. When the two drivers shake hands the camera sees a tattoo on the injured mans arm. (It may have been raining the whole time).

Years later the boy is driving his own car and has [problems with the car]. A man stops and helps fix the car. As the two shake hands we see the same tattoo as before.

Bonus points for a link to a video, but the name is sufficient. Thanks MeFi!

I should really wonder about other things. But I don't.

80sTVShow/FantasyFilter: Sword and Sorcery. At the end of each episode (?), the image would freeze and covert to a painting of said image. That's all I remember. I was 7 or 8 at the time so this would make it around 1985 or so. So. Yeah. That's all you get. Go to it, Mefites. On further thought, it might not have been the end of each episode...maybe the end of each commercial break.

And maybe...just maybe it was a sci-fi made for tv movie. I don't know.

Can you name this late 70s kids-coming-of-age movie? I was watching (I think) HBO in (I think) November-December 1978, and I saw this movie about a kid, about 10-12 years old, learning various 'facts of life' in a semi-serious, sometimes whimisical flick. Scenes I particularly remember: the kid sticks a cherry bomb under a trash can and sits on it, so he can ride it when the M80 explodes, and at another point, he witnesses a car crash, so he bicycles over to the excitement, and when sees the dead driver, the reality of the situation sinks in, and he cries. I've never seen this movie again or heard any reference to it, but even as a ten year old, it seemed to be a decently well made movie with a lot of heart and decent production values. It might have been made for TV, but I've got it in my head that it was a bit raunchy, like The Bad News Bears (hence, HBO, which I would've been able to watch in very late 1978 since my family was moving and staying in a hotel while looking for a house; it would've been just a few days or maybe a week or two after the Jonestown massacre). Any ideas?

My phone smells worse than my armpit

Why does my cell phone smell like heinous body odor? ME: Clean person, showers regularly. Healthy. Fit.

My cell phone: A motorola razr with a nasty odor problem.

Seriously it smells bunk. I cleaned it with qtips and warm water, still smells. I don't even use it that much. The keypad smells the worst, like a an NYC cab whose driver hasn't showered in weeks. Like he's just been sitting in the cab sweating, dripping fast-food grease on his chest, like he has no idea what deodorant is and even if he did he would never use it.

I think the phone smells worse the longer its been on.

Ideas?

Can anyone figure out the name/artist for this song. It's based heavily on the following piano riff. It's very recent and sounds like it's roughly in the genre of Train or Coldplay. Here's the riff. Hastily-written note pairs are listed below (A-D means play the A and D note together, D being the note three steps up from A). Each line is a measure.
