Understanding the Trump-Voting Relatives

Yes, I saw this question. My question is somewhat different - I AM planning on attending Thanksgiving with a mostly Trump-voting family, and am trying to figure out how to discuss the things that will undoubtedly come up in a way that allows me to understand their point of view (whether it's rational or not), and effectively communicate my point of view. How to deal with gun-loving dad as a liberal daughter who hates guns?

My staunch Republican father is even more right-wing and also suddenly into gun ownership in the midst of Trump madness leading up to the elections. I'm in my 30s, liberal, and always have been. I hate guns and violence. He knows this. I text and call him only rarely, but when I do he now manages to pop a note about the gun he bought, how much fun he had with friends shooting at a range over the weekend, etc... into every conversation. I almost think he does it because he thinks it's "funny" to get under my skin. Guns are more than just politics, though. They scare me. When he first told me he got a gun, I emailed him about my fears and linked him to an article about gun accident statistics. Of course, he had a rebuttal for it all and says he's very safe with it, all of that. So far my tactic has been to stay silent if it's in a text (I just don't reply) or I'll say "OK" and move the conversation along to something else if it's over the phone. But the whole thing is tiresome. How do I get this all to stop? How do I respond to him when he tells me about his shooting range plans? [more inside]

Brother in Law tried to stop my wedding. How do I deal w Thanksgiving?

My husband and I were married this past May. In mid-February, before the wedding, the husband of my sister in law called my husband to tell him that he was making a huge mistake marrying me and that it was going to ruin his life. There was a lot of classism and casual xenophobia in his reasoning. Now he and my SIL are coming in from out of state for Thanksgiving. What to do? [more inside]
