Voice and Text from one number on an iPhone or a Mac?

I want one phone number to use for talk and text, and I want to be able to send and receive texts on my iPhone or from my Mac without using a browser or a second phone number. Currently, Google Voice does this, but it looks like Google is merging Google Voice into Hangouts this spring, and 3rd party apps will no longer work. GAH! I love being able to send and receive texts for my real number on my Mac (I use GrowlVoice). I'm currently on AT&T for my iPhone, but I'm more than willing to switch to another carrier. What are my options?

Did you think I was cheating on you?

I work in a restaurant a few times a month (I also have a full-time professional job that does not cause me nearly as much angst as this does). Last week, I accidentally left my phone there. During the maybe 45 minutes that the phone was there without me, the owners of the restaurant decided to go through my texts. [more inside]

Why can't I get group texts originating from iPhones?

Hi, my band members have iPhones. Since last month, I am not getting group texts from the other members. They can see my texts sent to the group, but their responses never reach my phone. Texts to and from the individual members work just fine, but I never get any of their texts to the group. Any idea what causes this and what can be done to fix it? I don't know the models they are using. I'm using a Blackberry Curve. The internet is filled with questions about this problem, but not specifically related to group texts, which are the only problem for me. The other issues are apparently related to iMessage.

Can I restore accidentally deleted texts/iMessages?

Like a moron, I just accidentally deleted a bunch of texts/iMessages from my iPhone 4 (not 4S). Is there any way to get them back? I'm backed up with iCloud. I've googled and looked at old AskMes but don't understand what I found. I need simple explanations.

Sketched out by repair guy but he has my computer.

The computer repair guy I found online took a longer time to get back to me, then appeared to have misplaced my machine when I called him for an update. After he located it and I agreed to let him continue fixing it, he sends me a highly inappropriate text message, very likely by mistake, the next day. I'm really skeeved out by now and would prefer not to continue working with this individual, but I'm not entirely sure what to do. Details within! [more inside]

I keep forgetting to return texts.

How do you keep track of your texts? I get texts that ask to set up drinks with a friend (or a playdate for my child), or asking how things are, or sending me a link to something silly to check out. If I can't answer then, inevitably a new text from someone else will come in later and I lose track of the unanswered one(s). This is an iPhone, by the way. [more inside]

No more 6am texts, I beg you!

I have an Android phone - T-mobile's MyTouch 3G Slide, to be more precise. How can I make it so when one particular contact text messages me, I don't get a sound or a vibration? I'm happy to download an app to make this happen, if there's not a native way.

Alternative to exorbitant US text rates through 3G?

I text a lot, but don't feel like paying the exorbitant prices for text packages here in American. I have plenty of 3G bandwidth, and wondered if there was a free/cheaper alternative than paying $10 a month for 1000 texts. I only need to text in the US and have a google voice account, but need a way to send and receive texts to my Android Phone.

Primary texts describing ancient Roman housing

I will soon be teaching a course on ancient Roman domestic spaces, and I am looking for primary source material to supplement readings in scholarship. Any suggestions of Roman texts (poetry, fiction, history, law, biography) that describe a Roman domestic space (domus, villa, insula, palace) would be much appreciated. Textual exempla of Roman domestic practices are also welcome (e.g., the account of Trimalchio's banquet in Petronius' Satyricon).

Can anyone recommend a superlative translation, or perhaps even better, a great paraphrase of The Koran?

The Koran. I read it long ago. I found it confusing, odd, hard to understand, in dire need of unpacking. I'd like to try reading it again. Can anyone recommend a superlative translation, or perhaps even better, a great paraphrase. Or at the very least one with decent annotations. I'm not averse to a version that does intelligent re-arranging of the sequence, as I recall chapters on cows following stuff on love. There are a number of current translations so pointers to informed reviews of them would be welcomed too.
