Excel is chapping my hide. I have a comma-delimited .csv which contains quote-demarcated text fields. The source of my never-ending joy is the recurrent use of inch-marks and commas within the textfields. Right this way...

I did a dumb thing. I put together a book list in this format:
first-name last-name (tab) book-title
Note that there *isn't* a comma between the author's first and last name.
Is there any "computer magic" I can perform to change it to this format:
last-name first-name (tab) book-title
The list is just in text format, for what it's worth. I'm on a Mac but also have access to a PC. I'd rather not have to cut-n-paste the last names, it's a pretty long list.

I'm beginning the long process of physically typing my dissertation, and I want to tap the hive mind for how to make the best use of my text editor. Yes, I said text editor: I know that programmers swear by emacs/vim/whatever for physically manipulating text, and I want to know what tricks they know that will be useful for someone writing actual English, not just code.

A previous thread recommended
OhDontForget.com as a way of scheduling text messages to be sent to one's phone. Though the site makes reference to UK cellphone carriers, tests to my O2 phone have not worked, and the site says it is "currently only working in the US and partly in Canada". Does anyone know of a similar service that functions in the UK?

A friend of a friend who does not care for me told his friend that I sent him a text mesage to his cellphone and even showed his friend the message however, I did not send the message, do not know this person's cell ph # nor do I know his last name. The question is, how did he show my cell ph # as having sent a text message to his cell ph. It must be possible because my friend saw my # attached to this message in the inbox in his cell ph .

Communicating with a group via text and email? How can a group of 7 communicate via text and email. 3 are email only, 4 are text only, the idea is any member can send a single text or email which is delivered to all 7 as an email or text as appropriate. Does this exist? Alternate suggestions welcome.

Here's the deal: I've exhausted my neurons looking for some kind of answer to a
mathematical symbol stumper. I'd love to know who invented, originated, or was the first individual to use the double-
tilde (≈) as a means of expressing/denoting "approximately equal" in mathematics. I know that
Robert-Recorde is supposed to have introduced the "equals" sign (=) in 1557. Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. I await enlightenment.

SAS guru question: Is there an easy way to turn voluminous txt multi-page SAS reports generated with PROC REPORT back into a series "one observation per row" SAS tables? I know I can do it with a medium size Perl or Python script but I'm assuming someone must have dealt with this problem before, likely in SAS itself.

Name. Tab. Phone number. This creates two columns. One for name and one for phone number, except--when someone has a really long name that goes past the tab setting and impinges on the phone number area.
Is there some sort of tab setting that will make that long name wrap around, creating a second line within its own name area?
For the record, I know I could use a table to do exactly this, but I'm reformatting a huge amount of text that is already laid out with tabs. Any advice for this poor sap who accepted the job?
The text is in an InDesign document, but I can copy it to a word processor or anything that would do the trick. Thanks!

I recently switched over to a plain text file as my to-do list; I can structure it the way I want, it is an absolute cinch to access in any one of a hundred zillion different ways, it's crossplatform, and so on. However, I am running into one methodology I can't figure out how to translate into the "plain text" world, and that is repeating tasks.
