Does anybody know of any software solutions for manually capturing connections between specified regions within and between documents? [more inside]
Before building my own... does this software exist? I need to search a collection of PDF & Word files for key phrases, and dump the surrounding lines (x-m to x+n characters/lines, where x is the found phrase) into text files. I occasionally need to search a few dozen files for a few dozen data items, which usually have some identifying text nearby. This needs to be automated. Big bonus if it implements OCR, but that's not essential. Freeware, or cheapware, obviously is best. Windows-based is preferable, but I can do Linux.
In order to reduce eyestrain when on the computer, I use the basic OSX (10.6.8) Text to Speech (System Prefs -> Speech -> Text to Speech) software for the computer to read out long-form articles found online. This works great! Except....sometimes when I ask "Alex" to read out to me it will skip or garble words from the highlighted article, usually one word per sentence or after x number of words. Why? What technology and software I should look at inorder to be able to record interviews on Skype on to my hard disk (MacBook Pro) and then be able to manipulate the recording easily in order to type out a transcript? Or, preferably , find reliable speech recognition software that will automatically produce a written transcript I can enter into my word processing program (Open Office.) ? I'm willing to change up software and able to spend no more than $100 to make this work. Is it possible?
Creating an index of first lines, from a group of many poems, each stored in a seperate .txt file. Are there any applications or scripts that would help me to do that? [more inside]
I would like to create a font using someone's handwriting and am looking for a good software with which to do this. I'm not an expert in this, so it would have to have a small learning curve, unless it is really worth it for me to spend time learning so I can get reasonable results. [more inside]
WordPad is a bare-bones RTF editor. What app will approximate WordPad on an Android? Bonus points if the editor also syncs itself between Android and Windows. [more inside]
I need to animate text (short quotes, one or two sentences each) for a video presentation. Are there any (free or cheap) softwares other than Keynote/Powerpoint that do this? [more inside]
Suggestions for text analysis tools, please! Following a short discussion in the Metatalk infodump thread with cortex and iamkimiam, I realized that we'd appreciate suggestions for tools that can analyze text corpora and text files. Thanks! [more inside]

I maintain lists of to-dos and other information in a lot of text files. Currently I've been having to shuttle them between work and home via my FTP server, which is about a five step process and rather annoying, espcially when Dreamhost is slow. What is an easier way to synchronize text files between two Windows XP machines that are NOT on the same LAN... with a big emphasis on EASY, preferably two steps or less?
Are there any text editors for the Mac that will let me write in full-screen mode--i.e., with, say, yellow text on a black background, and no menu bar, dock, desktop, and so on? [more inside]
I need to convert a scanned pdf to searchable text, without printing it out and scanning it back in using OCR. Also, I'd like a cheap or free solution since I'm not likely to use it
often ever again.
OS X coders, what is your freeware text editor of choice? Something with syntax highlighting, line numbers, auto-indent, a versatile local open/save dialog, and [optional] FTP Open/Save. Right now I use SubEthaEdit and jEdit and like them both, but I'd like to see what other software I may have missed in Googling.
