One tequila, two tequila...

I'm looking for your favorite tequila cocktails! I love tequila but I'm pretty sick of margaritas and tequila sunrises. Are there other simple, not so sweet alternatives? Ideally they'd be simple cocktails I can make at home OR order out. I'm thinking the tequila equivalent of a drink like a Seven and Seven would be perfect, but I have yet to come across anything like that.

Thank you Mefi!

Premium tequila advice?

Recommend a premium tequila for margarita lover? I am buying a friend a bottle of tequila for Christmas- he loves margaritas. I know that a lot of the time you would only buy a very expensive bottle of liquor if you were planning on sipping it, not mixing it, but does this hold true for tequila/margaritas? Can you recommend a nice bottle? Price is not important, don't really have a budget. Thanks!

What are the best liquors for the money?

What is your favorite price point liquor of a given style and why? I remember when I turned 21, I set out to build up my adult liquor collection. I spent a lot of my hard earned cash on Lagavulin and aged Macallan scotch. I bought Grey Goose vodka, Don Julio and Patron tequilas, cognac and even some port wine. I was very proud of my collection until I realized that my roommates were surreptitiously mixing my scotches with Coca Cola whenever they ran out of Jim Beam.

A few years later, I've given up the pretensions of trying to impress anyone with my liquor collection. At least until a bottle doesn't amount to half of my paycheck.

So here's my question:

What do you drink when you actually enjoy liquor but don't have the cash to get the great stuff? What is your favorite good enough liquor?

Tequila as cold remedy?

My girlfriend has a cold. Multiple people today have told her to take a shot of tequila before bed as a remedy. This sounds like a load of spit to us. Can anyone confirm or refute this? Thanks.

I'm a whisk(e)y drinker stepping into the world of tequila, and I need some good reading. I love the Regans' The Book of Bourbon and Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch -- books that have background and history as well as tasting notes. Is there a definitive book for tequila? What are your favorites?

What tequila should I buy in Mexico?

What tequila should I buy in Mexico? I am going to Mexico on vacation on a cruise ship. We will be in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, and Mazatlan. I have become a fan of tequila, but up in Washington the prices are high and the selection is limited. What are some good tequilas that I can get in Mexico to either try while I am down there or bring back a bottle? I am not looking for anything too pricy or high end, but wouldn't discount it. Mainly I would like to find stuff that you just can't get in WA. Age doesn't matter, I like both the blanco and anejo, mainly I just want some decent stuff. Bonus points if it comes in a fun or unusual bottle.

Agave flavor in tequila

Help me find a tequila I'll enjoy more. In the last year I've come across a couple of tequilas that I actually enjoyed, which surprised me. Basically instead of an oaky, smoky, woody flavor (like El Tesoro de Don Felipe or Patron Añejo) or a musty, off, dirty-socks flavor (Sauza Hornitos), these tequilas had a strong, sort of fresh or green, cactus-y or agave-y flavor. I finally put it together when I tried some fresh blue agave nectar that was being used to sweeten margaritas. I love that flavor.

So far what I've enjoyed most is a tequila called La Cofradia reposado, a gift from Mexico, which I can't find at my usual liquor stores. My substitute has been Puerto Vallarta reposado, which I do enjoy. In general anejos are not to my liking and the reposados I've had I've liked better. I do occasionally sip tequila straight but more often I make a very tequila-heavy margarita on the rocks, with a little lime juice and Cointreau. When I can taste the cactus in my margarita I am happy!

I've heard that some of the silver or "blanco" - non-aged - tequilas have a more pronounced cactus-y flavor. But I've never tried one. I would like suggestions from tequila drinkers about what tequilas to try next!

Comedy Skit About Tequila

Some time ago a colleague (now left the firm) sent me an mp3 file of a comedy skit about drinking different types of alcohol from the point of view of the "stomach" of the person drinking. It ended with the person drinking "tequila" and the voice over had some very funny Mexican-type dialogs. My Googling skills have failed me. Can someone recall this comedy skit and where I might find it? Cheers :-)

I'm hardly drunk and all my friends are puking their guts up. Help?

Other than weight and the proof of the alcohol, what factors influence the level of intoxication resulting from a given dose of alcohol? I was out at the bar this evening with some friends, and found that despite having had about 10 shots of tequila, I find myself only mildly impaired, and nowhere near puking. (I can tell now by my typing skill..when I've had too much, I backspace more than normal)

All my friends, who had less than I, passed the point of regurgitation. (save the designated driver, of course!) Some of them had the same all tequila evening as I, a couple of them had Southern Comfort and lime juice, whatever that's called.

Why is that?

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps my liver is healthy because I don't drink to excess often anymore.

Needless to say, it's something of a killjoy when everybody else is either passed out or puking and you've hardly got a decent buzz going, despite having more :p

Personally, I was convinced that the bar was diluting the alcohol, but based on the reaction of everybody else, apparently not.

ObscureBoozeFilter: I was in SF with some friends and we did shots of (what I think) was called Stella. Now I can't find it... It was a night of heavy drinking, so there's no surprise that I am a bit hazy on what we drank. If I do remember correctly, however, it was a cranberry (?) flavored tequila but was incredibly smooth going down.

It may not be what I remember it being, but it was a very deep red color, tasted of berry, and was tequila. I think it came in a bottle that looked similar to a wine bottle that may or may not have been red also. Oh, and it was expensive.

Does anybody know what this is and where I can find it? I have tried all of the usual search engines, including Amazon and BevMo, and I can't find anything that is even close to it.

Not Chiquita Banana Man.

I'm going to be the Chiquita Banana Lady for Halloween. Can you think of a spicy Latin costume for my boyfriend? We thought of a tequila worm, tequila bottle, and one of those men in Tijuana who wear hawaiian shirts, blow whistles, and pour tequila down peoples' throats before violently shaking their heads. We've also thought of a banana. But he's not excited about anything so far. The easier, (and cheaper) the better.

OR: If you can think of a related brand mascot costume, that's great too! Preferably something human. And not the Jolly Green Giant. Thanks, all!

I wanna sell booze.

I'm curious what it would take to make and sell a bottle of booze commercially. A new tequila or vodka for instance. What would it take to have my own bottle for sale in Albertson's (etc...) nationwide. I know Sammy Hagar wanted his own tequila and now has it, and I know some guy started Skyy vodka. Now, Sammy is clearly a $$$$$-onaire, and for all I know, so was the Skyy guy before he started. Does it take a million bucks? Or can I start small for $10,000? What kind of barriers to entry are there? Legality issues? Initial production? Production scalability? Any info would be appreciated.

Help me figure out what movie I'm thinking of.

Help me figure out what movie I'm thinking of. I'm pretty iffy on all the details, so bear with me. It takes place in an apartment complex in California (the kind with an outside courtyard and more or less seperate apartments). All the shots I remember were either in an apartment, or just outside in the complex. I thought it starred Jimmy Stewart, but I just spent a long while on IMDB and I couldn’t find it. I believe it was in Black and White, but it could have been color. The central theme has to do with a girl living with the main male character without being married, or maybe just about her living alone and not being married. There is a scene where the main male character brings home a bottle of tequila and a book of poems. I believe the poems were by e.e. cummings. He reads one to her. I'm pretty sure they decide to get married by the end of the film.

I just asked a couple of pros and they couldn't help me out. Did I dream this?

Also, I'm interested in exactly what poem he reads.

Straight up. No lime.

As a burgeoning tequila snob, I have two questions:

1) What are your favorite tequilas (especially, let's say, moderately priced ones) and why? Second question inside. 2) The other day I left two shots of tequila (in steel shot glasses) sitting out on my desk overnight. The next morning, I noticed them, tried to drink one but it was completely uningestible. It tasted like it had gone rotten or something. Does anyone have an explanation for this? And does it relate to the fact that, in my experience at least, the taste of tequila tends to degenerate the longer you hold onto an open bottle?
