I want to make a tent that goes over the opened lift gate (hatchback?) of my minivan. The ones I've seen are expensive, and I have an old tent, plus a couple of old tent flies and some mesh screen. The tent acts as an extension of the van and allows in air. Could also be used as privacy space for the camping potty. So, ideas and suggestions for making it as good as possible? Have you ever made your own tent? [more inside]

I'm looking to start backpacking/rough camping this year, and I've had a hard time picking a guide. Can you recommend a book (preferred) or a website for this sort of thing? I've done some not-so-rough campground camping before, but it was alway drive-in camping. We'd love to start off with over nighters and work our way up from there. We don't know what type of pack/tent/gear to get at all. Bonus: guides for the tri-state (Philadelphia-New Jersey-Delaware) area camping/packing would be nice, too. Thanks!

I got a free new REI tent, but it doesn't come with poles. The tent just says "Quarter Dome, year of 2007". We went into REI but the tent is too old for them to support. I emailed Tent Pole Technologies for their opinion and was told that only the 3 UL was made in 2007, and I coughed up the money to buy the poles. However, they do not fit. My tent has grommets on all 4 corners, but each pole only has a grommet on one side. Also, my tent looks a lot like the pictures of other REI quarter dome 3 UL tents, but only half of it is sleeved, the other is attached by hooks. I have emailed Tent Pole Technologies back, but am not hopeful that they will do much more than grudgingly give me a partial refund. So how can I find poles for this tent or should I just give up?

I have an old REI Hobitat 6 tent that has reached the end of its useful life. There were some things I really liked about that tent, and some things I really disliked. I'd like to find a tent that keeps what I liked and fixes what I disliked. [more inside]

I need to buy a shade tent/canopy that is 1) as lightweight as possible and 2) easily erected by one person 3) who is only five feet tall. If I could, I would buy the REI Alcove Shelter
, but it's out of stock. What else can you recommend?

I'm throwing a small outdoor party tomorrow (25 people) and now there's rain in the forecast. It being graduation season, I don't want to spend all day calling party stores to find someone who can still rent me a tent. So, will a pop-up canopy like this
protect people from the rain or is it a waste of money? [more inside]

Starting in a month, my girlfriend and I will be living for the summer in a 10x16, two room Kelty tent we bought on craigslist. We will be living/working on a farm outside of Olympia, WA. We'd love any advice/experience you might have on long-term tent living. We're super excited about it but we are aware it will suck sometimes... what sucked about it and how can we prepare for the suck? Lots more details inside on building a makeshift kitchen, hopefully cozy bedroom, etc. [more inside]

Our tent is OK but there's a gap between the sides and the groundsheet, which makes it rather chilly. How can I best make it more wind- and rain-proof? I think attaching a strip of some sort of waterproof material around the bottom of the sides, that could be tucked under the groundsheet, is the best option. But what sort of fabric? And how do I stop the water wicking up it from the ground and making the sides of the tent wet? [more inside]

I am attending film school where I am putting together the proposal for an ambitious film that takes place in the Roman era, in tent interiors. Now, the Romans used leather for tents, however I'd like to use a cheaper alternative, such as brown canvas. Should I use canvas?
Where can I get largish quantities of canvas/tent making material?
(Some source specific to Vancouver would be very helpful!)

Following up to this
question, my tent seam seal failed to stick down some of the taped seams that were coming untaped. Is it supposed to be able to stick them down or is that irrelevant as long as the seam seal goop absorbs into the stitching etc. I just thought that since when I bought the tent some of the taped seams were stuck down properly and some were peeling up, that maybe that was responsible for the leakage. I have this
tent. The rainfly according to the box is polyester and the plastic window for the solar panel is PVC and the seams where the two materials join are 'taped'. (They are also stitched, whatever.) This seal between the two materials is leaking. Given the type of materials how do I patch this leak? (I have sprayed all interior seams with Silicone tent spray as instructed).

Need advice for two tent camping newbies about to travel the country via Honda Accord. Is KOA generally reputable/nonscuzzy nowadays? Any other hints for this year's summer season? Recommendations on equipment? Do you have to reserve ahead of time (we are trying to not schedule ourselves too much!) or can you usually show up in the evening and get a spot? This question is as broad as can be - all advice welcome. We are happy to do some off-trail places but don't want to backpack necessarily. [more inside]

I want to build a long giant centipede costume for a parade, but am having trouble finding 'how-to' links. I've found lots of parade pictures & sites, but few costume/float building resources. I've gone back & forth between building it segment by segment, to building one long strip that can collapse for storage. I think I've settled on the one long piece. Know of any cheap sources for flexible tent poles sans the tent? Ideas? Links?
