We are switching from AT&T cell phone to service to Verizon, and I'd like to perform the switch smoothly while also using one of the new phones as a Christmas gift. Your advice on the proper procedure would be welcome.

Why is it that the phone company can't figure out whether or not an area code is needed when dialing - even when I can't - and just dial the number accordingly?

I will be traveling in Germany for a week soon, and will need a cell phone while there. I won't be able to use my personal cell phone (incompatible with Europe) but I have an unlocked GSM phone that I've used in Europe before. Please help me find a SIM card (with German phone number) that I can order now and get delivered to the US
before I leave for my trip.

I just moved to a new part of the state, and had a landline telephone installed through my local telco. I asked if they could port my old number (123)-xxx-xxxx to my new landline, and they said my old number was not in the same "Rate Center". I confirmed that they were telling the truth based on this AskMeFi
post.
I have the option to enable call forwarding from my old number to my new landline, which takes care of incoming calls.
Now I am turning to you, the hivemind, to find out how to dial out from my new landline, and have my old number, (123)-xxx-xxxx, show up on other peoples' caller ID.
I've done some searching and found a bunch of convoluted VoIP setups that would achieve this solution for me, but I'm not that technical, and I don't want to have to dial a million numbers just to make a single phone call from my land-line.
Does the hive mind have any simple solutions?

Require a replacement for my landline and the 30 bucks a month that it costs me as I now have 4 cell phones in the house.
Require a telephone device that (a) rings on more than one handset (b) has access to cheap long distance (c) good quality and dependable.
I realize Google Voice does a lot of this, but I'm in Canada and we don't have Google Voice available here yet or any indication of how soon it could be arriving.
Is all of this possible without a landline?

I need recommendations for a good "emergency autodialer" system for my grandmother. The general idea is that should she fall and break her hip (or whatever), she can hit a button on a pendant, and the system calls some preprogrammed numbers and delivers an emergency message. CTQs below...

No dial tone inside my house, but the DSL is working. When I plug a phone directly into the grey box (a.k.a. Network Interface Device) on the outside wall of the house, at the same time disconnecting the link from the phone company's incoming line to the wiring inside the house, I get a dial tone! It seems that the phone company is still providing service. The evidence is exactly what I'd expect if there were a phone off the hook inside the house... but there isn't. What else could be going on?

Is there a cheap or free way to setup a phone number in Trinidad and Tobago and have it forward to an American number? Skype and Grand Central don't have numbers in that area code (868). A dozen other vaguely similar services don't, either.

For the last month or two I've been hearing noises from the flat above me. Specifically, I hear a phone number being dialled (as if by a modem), followed by the standard telephone voice saying that the number dialled has not been recognised. This voice repeats itself for a while, before the whole process starts again. This goes on for hours at a time. What's going on?
