By the time my cat gets to the vet, I may have to be sedated, too.

How can I keep my kitty from bouncing off the walls while he’s fasting? My 12-year-old cat Marty must fast Monday after 8 p.m. in preparation for teeth cleaning (and the requisite anesthesia) Tuesday at 8 a.m. (Sorry to fall down on the picture mandate – he’s all black, so taking a recognizable photo of him is … not easy!) Are there any teeth whitening strips that don't have mint flavor?

I'm having trouble finding teeth whitening strips that don't have a mint flavor. Some advertise that they have a mint flavor and others just don't say. (For health reasons, I must avoid mint.) Any ideas?

the canine's incisor

Diagnodent and tiny cavities - get them filled?

I recently moved and went to a new dentist. My old dentist used a probe to find cavities - I haven't had a cavity in a decade. This new dentist used a Diagnodent and told me I had 5-6 areas of decay that he wanted to drill into and fill. He said he didn't know if they went into the dentin or just the enamel, and wouldn't know until he got in there. What's up with this Diagnodent business? Is it legit? YANMD, but is a Diagnodent really better than a probe, and does it sound wise to get them filled? Thanks.

weird feelings in my teeth!

My two bottom front teeth has been feeling a little funny since last Wednesday. They feel tight or crowded, kind of like how I felt back when I had braces on. they also kind of feel like the teeth were impacted recently, which they weren't. They don't hurt-- if I had to pinpoint, I would say the feeling came from between the two teeth. when I bite they don't hurt more. But the tight feeling is quite noticeable, and certainly not very comfortable. They've gotten a bit better in the past five days. What could cause this? Also, I just knocked my upper front tooth on my computer screen 3 minutes ago. It hurt a little bit/ can feel the shock for about 30 seconds, and then it's back to normal. There was no bleeding and I couldn't see any fractures and it wasn't loose. Should I have a dentist look at it anyway? I am worried that it might die later. I've been very worried about my teeth, and at this point I don't know how much to freak out about things that goes on in my mouth! [more inside]

Do I have "soft" teeth?!

Why are my upper left molars so fragile?! I am only 27, but my last three teeth are all dead and have cracked. I had a lot of cavities as a child, despite rarely having any sweets and a moderately good dental hygiene (okay, it wasn't impeccable, but it was not as horrible as some I've seen, namely my father who never brushed with no cavities at all) but as a teenager/young adult/adult my teeth were mostly fine and my brushing habits are much better nowadays. Within the last two years I've had two molars cracked. One losing a big chunk, the other down the middle and is not salvageable. All on my left upper side. [more inside]

Should my seven-year-old son's dentist knock him out?

Just got home from a dentist appointment with my seven-year-old son. Five of his baby teeth are crowding the rest of his teeth and need to be extracted very soon. But he's extremely anxious at the dentist, and after today's ordeal, they're recommending putting him completely under using IV sedation with an on-site MD. I had IV sedation for my wisdom teeth, and it was amazing, but I'm flat-out terrified to knock out my little boy. He's never had anesthesia of any kind. Is it worth doing? Are there any risks or caveats I should know? Would it be better to stick with oral anasthetic? Help!

Tell me my tooth is not going to fall out!

I got bashed in the face yesterday. Please tell me my tooth is not going to die. I know you are not my dentist. I am not sure if I need to go to the dentist. Yesterday afternoon at the cafe, I reached up high to move some kids' books that were stacked horizontally on the shelf above our BookCrossing shelf. Unbeknownst to me, balanced on the books, and totally invisible to anyone but a basketball champion, was a ceramic bowl filled with crayons. The bowl fell off the books and onto my upturned face, a distance of about 2-3 feet, I suppose. It bashed me on my filtrum, right over my right hand big tooth at the front. Hit the, well, the filtrum, hitting that and my upper lip into my gum (I seem to have bitten my lower lip and jarred my bottom teeth too). It bounced off and smashed on the floor. No bruise yet but really tender and I am scared I have damaged my tooth's root and the tooth will suddenly die! [more inside]

I get black stuff on my teeth. Anyone heard of this?

I get black stuff on my teeth. Anyone heard of this? I haven't been brushing my teeth regularly for a while, and that might have something to do with it. I easily get a black film over my teeth, and it doesn't brush away easily. I just scrape it off with a nail, but it's hard to get it all. It's like black plaque. I'm not eating anything unusual, so I don't know why it's happening.

Are my antibiotics necessary?

I had a tooth extracted last week and despite being on antibiotics for four days, it's infected, and the infection has spread, making it painful to swallow. The solution: a different antibiotic has been prescribed. I don't like antibiotics, so my question is: what would happen if I just didn't take the damn things, took the painkillers, braved it out and waited for my body to handle it alone? Would that just be stupid? I appreciate that it's probably hard to advise without specific details, but any comments welcome.
