I need to come up with a Christmas/birthday gift for an exceptionally cool, hip, mature 13 year old dude. [more inside]
I'm considering giving my 15 year old son an experience gift from the Mysterious Package Company for his birthday. I'm looking for any feedback folks may have either from the giving or receiving side of the equation. Thanks!
We have a 15 year old (entering 10th grade) staying with us for the summer, who needs significant help with math. He worked pretty hard this past semester to bring his math grade up to a C - and I don't want him to lose that knowledge. What can we do to work on his math skills this summer? Open to all ideas - books, online tutorials, games.
I want to spend $50 US / $70 Australian on a birthday present for a young teenager who likes drawing anime-ish figures and hasn't got arty friends or other external resources. They have an Ipad Air, but I was thinking of books, plus maybe some nicer paper and/or pens? The stuff they like drawing is mostly Gothic-like figures in formal poses, it might be good to help them branch out a bit too.
How does one handle "parenting" a teenager without feeling like you are just asking questions/following up on things/doing not-fun things? I feel like my life is get up, do the things, go to work, come home, enforce a bunch of rules, watch tv, go to bed. I don't want that to be my relationship with my niece! [more inside]
For a board game I'm working on, I need a "definitive" list of teenage cliques that would have been present in a suburban American high school in 1989. This is mostly a "free-form, go nuts" question, but I have a few guidelines I'd like for you to keep in mind... [more inside]
In 10 days I'm going to visit a friend in Harare who is a foster mother to seven girls between the ages of 11 and 16. They all live on a farm in the suburbs and watch movies, play cards, sometimes read books in the evening. What are some enriching and inspiring books and movies for teenage girls to read and watch that I can bring for them? [more inside]
I am attending a sweet 16 birthday party tomorrow and would like ideas for a gift card. [more inside]
During the school break, my teenager with moderate social anxiety and related perfectionist anxiety needs to work to earn some side cash/pocket money. Older siblings worked at fast food places, dogsat, did data entry, etc. at the same age, but these aren't working out for him at all. I need ideas for work that can be done from home and aren't total "makework". [more inside]
My teenage brother has been struggling with pretty severe anxiety and depression for the last ~9 months; while my parents are being (in my view) amazing caregivers for him, I think they're both suffering from a lack of self-care, optimism, and support. What resources can I point them to, and what can I do, to help them with this? [more inside]
My teen was just diagnosed with pulmonary stenosis. The cardiologist was checking via echocardiogram for a different heart murmur and says while that heart murmur has resolved, he now finds PS. He says it is a mild case and likely due to a recent growth spurt, as bodies can grow unevenly, and it will probably resolve as Kiddo grows more (and to keep an eye on Kiddo in case s/he becomes short of breath, etc etc). Is this a real Thing? [more inside]
This is possibly the greatest problem I've ever had; looking for outside the box answers. I'm able to spend about $3000 on a educationalish vacation for me and my 16-year-old son. There are a few specific parameters that need to be followed but other than that, anything goes. [more inside]
My niece, a 15-year-old who'll be on her first trip outside the US, is visiting us in London in mid June. My wife and I will have lots of time to spend with her doing tourist things as well as just hanging out, and her grandparents will also be here for part of the time, but she'll be on her own for portions of a few days. Although a bit shy, she's expressed interest in doing something cool and interesting with that time that would allow her to be around other teenagers. [more inside]
My son picks up the mail for us every day and there's hardly ever anything for him. Let's fix that. [more inside]
Our two pre-teen children have been clamoring for more ways to listen to music, and they're both going to have personal wifi-only Android devices after Christmas. What music ecosystem should we set them up with (or encourage them to use)? [more inside]
I got a lot of great ideas after this question about things to teach my high school English class, but I need more book recs. MeFis are a literate bunch, but I have incredibly specific parameters from which I can work. [more inside]
My teenage (14) daughter and I are going to a wedding in Charleston. Yay! The wedding is on a Friday, but since school is out for us part of the next week we thought we'd make a vacation of it! So we'll have Saturday through Monday free, leaving on Tuesday. What's good to do with a teenager in and around Charleston, SC? Are there any amusement parks or other cool tourist attractions within say a 3 hour drive of Charleston? Any teen-focuses Charleston-ish recommendations would be appreciated!
My 13 year old nephew's just come out (only to his best friend and mother so far) as trans and seems relieved and happier. I'm terribly happier for him; it's been a rough couple of years for reasons beyond normal early adolescence. How can I best support him? [more inside]
Kinetic 3, 15, was diagnosed with OCD and has been on Celexa for 7 years. Over the past few years, despite working with a nutritionist, eating a healthy diet and getting lots of exercise, his weight has ballooned into the technically obese category. He's 5'5" and weighs over 155 lbs. Going to see prescribing psychiatrist next week to consider changing medications, looking for advice. My son is a healthy, active kid. He runs, bikes, hikes, kayaks, swims. He eats colorful foods, a mostly vegetarian diet and very little in the way of bread, pasta, potatoes, junk food, ice cream, soda, etc. He's worked with a nutritionist who feels that his diet and portion sizes are fine and she thinks at this point, he needs to consider a medication change. I'd like to go to the prescribing doctor with some knowledge. [more inside]
Should my young teenager use her real name on her web comic? [more inside]
My neighbor has young teenage children and asked me what tech-related material they should be studying in school to assure themselves of the best employment opportunities in the future. I would like to be able to give her the most informed answer possible, so I came here for assistance. What would you tell at 13-year-old who asks you what she or he should be sure to learn about to have the widest career options going forward?
We have a teenager that wants to visit his internet girlfriend and is being increasingly pressuring. We're resistant, feel that we are right in being resistant, but just wanted to check whether we're being reasonable or not. So, given the details (and SO MANY DETAILS) below, should we be stopping this teenager visiting his girlfriend in another country? Or should we let him go? [more inside]
What do we do about this depressed / unmotivated / lazy kid? Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
The question came up in a thread on the blue linked within and it was suggested that I come here. How do I tell the story of a disabled student's fight against bullying? How do I not make her a victim while still making an impact? [more inside]

I'm the special education teacher in a therapeutic high school and I've got an amazingly smart male student with an assortment of behaviors (sleeping, work refusal) and diagnoses (depression, selective mutism) who needs help and I'm looking for some suggestions. Have you ever successfully worked with a kid like this? How? [more inside]
I pack a lunch every day for a 15 year old boy (not my son - I have only been doing this for a year so I don't intimately know all of his likes and dislikes). This year he has asked for "healthier" lunches, as he plays sports and is pretty small in stature but wants to get bigger and stronger. I have NO idea how to get any healthier than what I am doing, given his particularities: [more inside]
We discovered last week that our 14yo daughter is cutting. And that it has actually been going on for two to three years. We need help so we can help her. [more inside]
I'm looking for the best marine biology summer camp for my sibling who will be 14 in the summer of 2014. Or the resources to find one. [more inside]
My 15-yo daughter has been dating a guy for about a year, has recently become sexually active with him, and we're moving toward getting her on hormonal birth control. The fact that she even came to me to talk about this is a minor miracle. How can I encourage a sex-positive attitude? What boundaries and limits, if any, should I establish? [more inside]
Really excited to bring my daughter to NYC for her first time next weekend. I haven't been for a few years and never with one of my kids (she's 15) so this trip poses some new challenges. I want her to have a blast, as I have every time I've been there, so I thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions. Oh, and we get along great and she's awesome and I love her! [more inside]
My 14-year-old niece is having trouble in school and has very few, if any, resources among her immediate family. Compounding the problem, her guardian is not family and seems to prioritize her own son's needs over hers. We want to help but we live a thousand miles away. What can we do? [more inside]

My son and I will be in Las Vegas for two days. This will be our first father/son outing alone together in a long time with no other family around. What are some fun/bonding things to do in sin city? My son is seventeen years old, likes heavy metal (so does his father), video games (so does his father) and japanese animation (unlike his father).
My 17yr old nephew is staying with me in London for a few days next month, as I'm taking him to his first gig. He likes graphic design, Jack white and playing guitar. What cool things should he go, see and do? [more inside]

My daughter is planning her 16th birthday party, which will happen in late July. She wants an overnight trip, preferably near the Oregon coast or someplace else with a beach. Since many beach houses expressly forbid teen parties, we're probably looking at camping or... I don't know, a remote cabin maybe. There will be three or four parents in attendance. I've already said that we'll have to have a budget (though I don't know what to plan for realistically), that only parents will drive there, and that the guests have to be people I know. 1) What are other suggestions for a party that is memorable, yet avoids things that are dangerous, illegal, or grounds for a lawsuit? And 2), Oregon folks, can you recommend a place that will be okay with late night music/dancing and about 15 teenagers?
How concerned should I be about my teenage daughter's obsession with taking pictures of herself? [more inside]

Sitting-tour-of-NYC filter: My seventeen-year-old sister is visiting me in NJ this week and we want to hit up NYC on Saturday.
