Teenage Boy, SSRI Change for Weight Gain

Kinetic 3, 15, was diagnosed with OCD and has been on Celexa for 7 years. Over the past few years, despite working with a nutritionist, eating a healthy diet and getting lots of exercise, his weight has ballooned into the technically obese category. He's 5'5" and weighs over 155 lbs. Going to see prescribing psychiatrist next week to consider changing medications, looking for advice. My son is a healthy, active kid. He runs, bikes, hikes, kayaks, swims. He eats colorful foods, a mostly vegetarian diet and very little in the way of bread, pasta, potatoes, junk food, ice cream, soda, etc. He's worked with a nutritionist who feels that his diet and portion sizes are fine and she thinks at this point, he needs to consider a medication change. I'd like to go to the prescribing doctor with some knowledge. [more inside]

technology courses advice for parents of teenagers

My neighbor has young teenage children and asked me what tech-related material they should be studying in school to assure themselves of the best employment opportunities in the future. I would like to be able to give her the most informed answer possible, so I came here for assistance. What would you tell at 13-year-old who asks you what she or he should be sure to learn about to have the widest career options going forward?

Sanity check on teenagers and their whims, please!

We have a teenager that wants to visit his internet girlfriend and is being increasingly pressuring. We're resistant, feel that we are right in being resistant, but just wanted to check whether we're being reasonable or not. So, given the details (and SO MANY DETAILS) below, should we be stopping this teenager visiting his girlfriend in another country? Or should we let him go? [more inside]

Help me feed a teenage boy healthy school lunches

I pack a lunch every day for a 15 year old boy (not my son - I have only been doing this for a year so I don't intimately know all of his likes and dislikes). This year he has asked for "healthier" lunches, as he plays sports and is pretty small in stature but wants to get bigger and stronger. I have NO idea how to get any healthier than what I am doing, given his particularities: [more inside]

How many simple rules for dating my teenage daughter?

My 15-yo daughter has been dating a guy for about a year, has recently become sexually active with him, and we're moving toward getting her on hormonal birth control. The fact that she even came to me to talk about this is a minor miracle. How can I encourage a sex-positive attitude? What boundaries and limits, if any, should I establish? [more inside]

Ideas for daughter's 16th birthday camping trip?

My daughter is planning her 16th birthday party, which will happen in late July. She wants an overnight trip, preferably near the Oregon coast or someplace else with a beach. Since many beach houses expressly forbid teen parties, we're probably looking at camping or... I don't know, a remote cabin maybe. There will be three or four parents in attendance. I've already said that we'll have to have a budget (though I don't know what to plan for realistically), that only parents will drive there, and that the guests have to be people I know. 1) What are other suggestions for a party that is memorable, yet avoids things that are dangerous, illegal, or grounds for a lawsuit? And 2), Oregon folks, can you recommend a place that will be okay with late night music/dancing and about 15 teenagers?

Adding one at the opposite end. 16 year old "adopted" daughter.

How do we "parent" a 16 year old girl? My family is taking in a 16 year old girl to be a new member of our family. She's an amazing young woman in a tough situation. No behavior or academic issues (I taught her in 8th grade, she babysits for us regularly), some emotional issues (most likely due to her environment). We're going to go through the process of temporary custody, so this is not a question about "the system" or "legality". This is a question of family dynamics. We have other children in the house who are super excited as well, but our oldest is 7 and we have no idea how to come up with rules, routines, and boundaries for a 16 year old. Of course we'll have to come up with what will work for us, but what kind of things should we be thinking about? We're already talking about curfew, bedtime!!!!?????, computer use, etc. What should we be thinking about that we might not be. Any help from those with teens or those who have adopted older kids would be appreciated.
