Book Recommendations for Teen

My 17yo son just finished the last available book in the Game is Life series by Terry Schott and is looking for other books he might enjoy. What he likes: YA science fiction, light fantasy, in-depth character development. Other books he has enjoyed: His Majesty's Dragon, The Martian, and Ender's Game. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

My student lost her battle with bipolar. (triggers ahead)

I'm a high school teacher at a small, therapeutic high school for teens with emotional disabilities. Three days ago, one of my kids suddenly and with no warning committed suicide at her home. Staff found out just as the kids were coming in. We quickly prepared how we would tell the kids, and the next three days were a blur of tears, shock, some hysteria; it was all horrific. [more inside]

Is there an adoption registration for disowned gay youth?

I would totally be willing to take in a kid who has been disowned by his/her parents for being LBTG. Is there somewhere I could register for that? Note: I am legally married cisgender woman with three young children of my own. Not being gay myself, there should be no legal obstacles in that regard. I'm just trying to connect with a disowned population.

For a teen visiting London what are some cool, organized activities?

My niece, a 15-year-old who'll be on her first trip outside the US, is visiting us in London in mid June. My wife and I will have lots of time to spend with her doing tourist things as well as just hanging out, and her grandparents will also be here for part of the time, but she'll be on her own for portions of a few days. Although a bit shy, she's expressed interest in doing something cool and interesting with that time that would allow her to be around other teenagers. [more inside]

How to help teen with alcoholic parent

A family friend who is divorced has been an alcoholic for more then several years. She has primary custody of a teenage daughter. We have kept in touch with the alcoholic mom but sporadically due to her behavior. Recently I found out the the daughter was cutting and acting out, I believe due to the stress of living with her mom. Because of this I started texting the daughter just to check in and give her some positive messages (mostly like “hope you have a good day” and “I’m so impressed how you did on that test”). I did ask her if she’d like to go to an alateen meeting which she agreed to but only if I went with her. However we haven’t set a date. [more inside]

Should my teenage son continue to play for a losing team or switch?

My son has been playing lacrosse for a regional team for about 4 years now. He is heading into his Senior year and is a team Captain. The team has struggled the last couple of seasons with terrible losses and very rare wins. Morale is low. Should he approach the coach of another team, a coach that he plays for in an off-season league, to discuss playing for him in the regular season? Or, should he struggle through what is likely his last season with his current, struggling team? What advice can I give him to help him decide? [more inside]

Not insuring our non-driving teen son.

My sixteen-year-old son got his license recently, and after a month (during which time he did not drive) we insured him for a month as we were going to be out of town and he needed the car. When we called our insurance company to remove him from our policy, we were told that the only way the company would uninsure him is if he turned in his license to the DMV. We only have one vehicle, and he won't drive. He's not the kid who is going to sneak off in the car, either. So can the insurance company just drop us or otherwise hose us over? [more inside]

Tips for 15 year-old negotiating long haul international travel alone

Yay! Our 15 year old nephew Sam is coming to visit us in Italy for three weeks during the school holidays. From Australia. Via Dubai, it's a 22 hour flight. Although he has to disembark and changes flights in Dubai, there is a relatively short hour and a half layover. He has only travelled internationally once before to Vietnam, and then not on his own. He is a great guy, however I want to ensure that he finds the whole experience as easy as possible. Any hints? Dubai is a wonderfully eclectic airport which will be an eye opener. As someone reasonably blasè about international travel and airport transfers, I am hoping to mine the hind mind for special hints that might help Sam in negotiating the flights, transfer and the clearing of customs and arrival in Rome? Thanks!
