eBay Issue: Confirming Order Cancellation as a Buyer

Yesterday I accidentally purchased something on eBay and had to contact the seller today to get the item cancelled. After much grumbling on their part they finally agreed, but now they're hassling me about accepting the cancellation on eBay somewhere and I think because the item never shipped that process doesn't apply. Can anyone help me confirm this? [more inside]

Why is Firefox doing this?

For some months now, seemingly at random, Firefox's UI will completely freeze up. Sometimes it happens after a couple of days, but sometimes after just a few minutes. When it happens, usually it's stuck and must be closed. There's a few weird things about it though, which lead me to believe it might be a Flash or hardware acceleration problem.... [more inside]

What's the opposite of "over your head"?

I do tech support for a complex software/hardware package and for some customers, I have no idea their experience level, and I start with the basics. I have to ask questions that might come across as very obvious to an experienced user and I want to know the safest and most tone-proof way to do this. [more inside]

A new beginning

I got a new ASUS laptop with Windows 8.1. I've removed some of the obvious bloatware, but I'm still getting minor hiccups in games, so I want to wipe everything and reinstall (I don't have the CD). I'm considering using the "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" feature under the "Update and Recovery" settings. According to the official website, "Only apps that came with your PC will be reinstalled." Before I waste several hours, will this actually remove the bloatware?

Help Me Helpdesk Redux

Last week I AskMe'd, thinking software was our problem with becoming a productive tech-support company. Apparently most all of the software acts the same, so the problem seems to be in the management side: how does the physical process of using help-ticket software, and helping people, from the IT Helpdesk end work, and what resources can help teach us to do it right? A slight under-understanding of Tinder

I am having trouble understanding how matches are formed. If I am bisexual and it shows me pictures of people of both genders, does that mean or imply those people are interested in people of my gender, or does it just randomly show men and women when both are selected? Is the pool of people I am shown a pool of people who already said they liked me first and then people who haven't been asked only after those people? Does it ever show me a picture of someone who has already specifically said they don't like me? And along the same lines, does it sometimes (as it seems) show me a bunch of people who haven't yet had the opportunity to thumbs up or thumbs down me, and if they do thumbs me up, will it then tell me and them we matched at the same time? Thank you. Postscript: Also - why so many matches and so few people initiating conversation?

Can I sell my small IT business?

Maybe we need to upgrade the installer too?

The house we bought years ago came with an existing home theater system, speakers wired into the walls, TV installed above the fireplace, components tucked away in a cabinet, all cables hidden away in the walls. It has been pretty awesome, but some of the components have started to fail. We bought a new TV, and the installer is talking about having to open up the wall to run the new HDMI cable alongside the existing cable that is already running through the wall from the TV to the component cabinet a few feet away. We really don't want to cut the wall open if we don't need to, and it seems to us that it should be feasible to use the existing wiring to pull through a new HDMI cable. Are we wrong? [more inside]

Selling tech without becoming the tech-support guy?

I sell and buy stuff like clothing or household goods on eBay without any problems, but whenever I try to sell computer-related gear I end up having a miserable time of it. Numerous apparently tech-illiterate shoppers and browsers message me repeatedly with basic tech-support questions that could be answered with a quick web search, and sometimes they then buy an item only to kick up a huge fuss and demand to return it, with me paying shipping both ways, when it doesn't work as they expect or isn't "compatible" with their setup (often seemingly due to buyer incompetence). Are there seller strategies for ameliorating this problem? [more inside]

Problems with latest version of GameMaker

I'm working on a project where I need to become familiar with the basics of Game Maker. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on my system. Every time I try to run a game to test it, it goes through a compile process, flashes a window on screen which quickly disappears, and nothing actually runs. I've tried the official forums and the support form on the site, and neither one has been much help. I think it might be a problem with permissions, but even allowing the program to run as admin hasn't worked. Log files and system specs below the jump. [more inside]

How do I stop a hardware beep in my desktop PC?

My IT Help Desk is stumped - can you help me? My computer is making what I can only describe as a hardware beep that I can't turn off. Muting Windows and disabling all system sounds doesn't work. Yet the beep only happens when I do certain things with the software - at first, it was only when trying to save a document into my virtual system in Word, but recently it's every time an email arrives in Outlook, which is just awful. This didn't used to happen, but once, many months ago, I accidentally pressed a random combination of keys and it started. I have no idea how to turn it off - and neither do the IT people. My browsers have ADD

How do I get my browser(s) to stop back tracking? When I use both Firefox and Chrome on my office computer, the browser will automatically flip back to the previous page (as if I hit the "back" button) after about 30 seconds. It will actually keep doing it until it gets back to the first page I opened in the browser. It doesn't happen with all web pages (Gmail and Metafilter seem fine), but it's particularly a problem with media sites (e.g. local newspapers, the Atlantic, Good Magazine). I mostly get around it by holding 'ctrl' when I click a link so it opens in a new tab and can't back track. But it's a pain in the butt. Is there a way to stop this?
