Seeking future shock.

Where can I find summaries of historical developments, technological breakthroughs, political and social changes etc. in a similar style as the Afterword in Charles Stross's anthology Toast (free download here)? I am interested in stuff that has happened in the last 30 or 40 years.

That is.. how technology effects culture, how it changes the way we think, learn, etc. Despite this seeming a rather obvious topic, I'm having a hard time finding good research sources. My guess is I'm not asking the question properly, but that doesn't change what I need to know. [more inside]

I've decided that I want to research / work in the development of strong, sustainable local communities using social networks, web and mobile technologies and urban design practice (particularly new urbanism). The problem is, I don't know how or where to get started in this field. [more inside]
