Does anyone know the name of an educational toy/kit for learning reading skills (English language) which involved a big box/case containing a number of small books with pages of heavy white cardboard, each page bearing a letter combination or a simple word. I think they were comb or spiral bound. [more inside]

What have you read that gave you a new outlook on the world—or even changed your life? I teach a Language Arts class to at-risk teenagers at a small high school, and I need to compile a body of short readings for next term, which is six weeks long. I want to give them those "a-ha!" moments that I had as a teenager when I read something that opened up my brain to something new and made my world larger. Warning: F911 question.

The kids in the classroom during My Pet Goat were reading the book out loud in this shouting, choppy cadence with no regard to content or inflection etc. At the end of each sentence, the teacher would give them sort of drill instruction; I think one of which was something like 'Now we're going to read the next sentence without any mistakes'. Cue kids barking words in sequence. Is this some sort of new teaching method?
