Teachers (especially MA): is it easier to move up or down grade levels?

I have a B.S. in Biochem and Molecular Bio, but after messing around as a bench tech for a while and then substituting at elementary schools, I found I was so much happier teaching then spending hours alone in a lab. Never expected it. So I've substituted mainly K-4 for over a year now (with high praise from the staff), and a few times in Jr. High. I've also done a lot of one-on-one work as a paraprofessional for kids who require accommodations. Physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, behavioral disorders, etc. The Problem: I'm qualified to teach gr. 7-12 full time right now, but in order to teach 6 or lower I need to complete most of a masters program before I can even get initial (or preliminary) licensure. I'd be willing to teach Jr. High for a couple years, but I suspect I would be happier in the long run as an Elementary teacher. [more inside]

Online education: turning graduates into a community of mentors?

I am part of an online philosophical community with an optional mentoring scheme. Those who complete enough lessons from a bank of hundreds graduate and can then become mentors to others, but few stay; how can I foster a sense of community amongst these graduates and encourage them to stick around to become valuable mentors to the waiting students? New Teacher's Aide Feeling Overwhelmed -- Is this normal???

Hi Everyone, I recently took a job as a teacher's aide in a public elementary school. It's my second week, and I like it, but I'm feeling overwhelmed. I think I may want to become a teacher, but I'm having some setbacks that are making me wonder if I am cut out for this field. I feel like I am one step beheind everything and/or totally ineffective at communicating with the kids. Here are some examples (They are long-winded . . . my apologies) [more inside]

Looking for a new public high school in nyc....

SO. My friend is about to get her teaching certification from the NYC Teaching Fellows program. Very exciting! At the end of the program, she will be eligible to teach at a high school in NYC. HOWEVER, apparently due to some current hiring freeze, she's only able to apply to jobs at public (non-charter) high schools that have opened in the past three years. Is there some database online that lists...um... dates when particular nyc schools opened? Or, do any of YOU know of a public h.s. in your neighborhood that opened in the past couple years? We're at a loss as to how to search for these schools! Anywhere in nyc will do.

How do I contact English, Literature, and Drama teachers in NYC?

I want to offer super-cheap ($10 to free) Shakespeare tickets to educators and their students in the NYC area. I'm interested in contacting both high school and college teachers. Would they likely welcome this or consider it spam? Is there some kind of message board or other resource I can use to contact these folks.

Working in Japan as an ALT with a girlfriend

Hi people with ALT experience, finding work in Japan sure is tough. Finding work with your girlfriend? Much harder. Where should a pair of people go to teach English in Japan? We are spending our time trying to get anywhere we can (We hear being near a city increases our happiness), however, we have been rooting for a position in Nagoya, Kanagawa as a close second. We keep hitting dead ends and are getting desperate. It looks like at this rate, we are going to save up $2,000 a piece and take a plane there in mid-april, 3 months from now, hopefully finding work in the 90 days we are legally allowed there. If the Kid with Tourette's Could Stop Barking, He Would. Sheesh.

How can I ensure my kid isn't being penalized for his disabilities in school? He's a 13-year-old 7th grader who's been diagnosed with OCD and ADHD (hyperactive type) and is on meds (and receives therapy as needed) for both. He is a reasonably smart, very chatty little dude. In a recent discussion with one of his teachers, I discovered that he's being penalized and verbally reprimanded for calling out in class. [more inside]

Does Complaining About A Teacher Work?

Will complaints about public school teachers generally fall on deaf ears? For those of you in public education... Does it really change anything if parents complain about a teacher? OR, does this just make the teacher angry and then they're likely to take it out on the kids? Does a teacher consider making changes if parents complain? Is there anything a principal can really do to a tenured, union member that will make a difference? Can such a teacher be effectively disciplined since there's really no threat of ever being fired.
