Gifts we can make for daycare caregivers?

What can we make to give as x-mas/holiday gifts to 6 "floater" daycare staff who take care of our kids sometimes, without breaking the bank? Or alternatively, what can we buy them for 10-15 bucks each that is nice and/or useful? Each child (ages 2 and 5) has 2 fulltime caregivers in their room, but this year there are about 6 additional "floater" staff members who help out, fill in on sick days etc. who we really feel deserve something too, to show our appreciation. Can teachers quit?

A good friend of mine is seeking to resign from her middle school teaching job at the end of this quarter. I have a lot of teacher friends, but the question I have has so far been unanswered. Her contract has no provision for voluntary termination, doesn't mention resignation at all, and goes so far as to say that any breach of contract (the terms of which specify a duration of a full school term) may result in heretofore unspecified damages. This is in Illinois. I know that YANAL (you are not a lawyer), dear reader, but the quandry remains: What happens when a teacher quits mid-year? Are there usually lawsuits involved in such cases? Are teachers really required to stick out an entire school year to avoid getting hauled into court for breach of contract? Any other gotchas?

Advice on Software/Paradigms for Non-Techies Going to Techie 6th-12th Grade School?

I'm working with a new 6th - 12th grade school focusing on Arts & Technology integrated into the cirriculum. We're looking for software that will allow us to accomplish varying tasks - e-mail for students/teachers/parents, digital portfolio publishing for students, shared discussion space for class comments, teacher/course specfic pages etc. Each student will have their own portable computer as well.

What I'm looking for is pratical thoughts/examples of how to provide this functionality. I've seen some schools using Manila, dotlrn also seems very promising but perhaps a bit too "big" for us to take on.

Is the weblog paradigm itself a good one to be pursuing to pull this off? Or are we just not ready to go there without significant effort? If you were attempting to create this techno environment for a school (many of whose students and teachers are unfamilar with technology) how would you pull it off?

Online Portfolios for K12

A K-12 school I am involved in wants to be able to publish digital portfolios of student work on the web. As to additional functionality (i.e. Commenting on work, Blogging) I'm open to proposals. Since the budget doesn't allow us to pay someone to hack apache and write code we're looking for an out of the box solution. I believe that Userland's Manila would let me do this at least in part - are there any other solutions I can be looking at?
