I am in a situation where % ownership of a house needs to be changed as a result of big life changes. We would like to do this without doing an actual sale among ourselves, but with the goal of selling the house and dividing the proceeds as we see fair, without paying big taxes. You are not my accountant, but maybe you can tell me at least what kind of an accountant I need?

I'm concerned I will be audited by the IRS because circumstances during the past year drastically changed our profit for the year thus resulting in a large refund, as a percentage of what we prepaid through estimates.
Nothing was done inappropriately/questionably/illegally and the money is owed to us but I would like to head-off an audit. Should I include a letter that explains these circumstances or would that draw more attention to the issue? Should I file early or late? Thanks!

Asking for friend, not that it matters, but how do she revise an existing payment plan with the IRS so that she pays more, or perhaps pay the whole thing off (preferably at lower than what she owes)?

Suppose I were soon to receive a check for approximately $20,000. Also suppose that this represents a portion of my share of an inheritance from a relative and that additional monies will be forthcoming and, though I don't know exactly how much, that'll probably be on the order of $50,000 or so. What are the tax implications of this for me? What could I do to minimize the taxes I pay on this money? (I'm in the U.S.) YANAAccountant or MAccountant.

Looking for a recommendation for a good CPA or accountant in the DC, NoVA, or Southern Maryland area to field a set of somewhat-complicated questions about taxes. (Read: H&R Block is not going to cut it here.) The problem? All my close friends use TurboTax, and I'm reluctant to mass e-mail my entire contact list for recommendations, since I think the type of CPA (or accountant--is there a difference?) might matter in this situation and figuring out what flavor I need means disclosing more personal financial details than I'm comfortable with.

Last year I got most of my income for working from home in the state of Virginia. I did work for a company that is not owned by me and was located in another town in Virginia. I got a 1099 as an individual from the company for the work that I did. This work was all conducted by phone and email, no one came to my home. I recently got a letter in the mail from the City of Winchester, VA saying that I did not register as a business in the city and that I needed to pay back licensing fees. I know you're not my lawyer, but do I have to do this?

I'm thinking about cashing out my 401k to help start a business. I know I will pay a penalty, and that what I take out will be taxable income, but I expect my business to post a loss the first year that would offset most of (if not all) of this income. Would I still have to pay taxes on all of the 401k money?
