Whoah, that's a lot of self-employment taxes that I'm going to have to pay. Oops.

Self-Employment-Tax-Filter: I didn't expect to have much in the way of income from my consulting business in 2007... setting my deductions to '0' should've taken care of what I expected. However, I ended up making almost a quarter of my income by consulting. I understand you're not an accountant and you're not my accountant, but how can I end up not having to owe a ton of penalties for not having filed self-employment tax?

Writing off a home office used for volunteer work?

I write off my home office every year as a legitimate business expense. This year I did not focus on freelance projects and did a lot of volunteer/pro bono work. What do I need to know about writing it off this year? I'll seek out a CPA, but I'd like to be knowledgeable first. Anybody ever get themselves into a similar situation? [more inside]

Cost basis reset...

Suppose that person A buys a stock that then increases in value, and then person A dies leaving everything he or she owns person B. Then under U.S. law the cost basis of the stock for person B is reset to the price at the time of the person A's death. Suppose now that I am the executor of person A's will. Does this tax benefit apply if I sell the stock and distribute the proceeds to person B, or must I transfer the stock to person B?

Tax advice in Raleigh?

I work full-time and my wife and I both have sole proprietorships. I'd like to engage a financial advisor to look over our tax planning. Our situation doesn't change much year to year, so I'm envisioning just a one-time thing to see if we're missing any opportunities. Our estate plan and investments are already in good order. Do I want an accountant? A tax preparer? Financial planner? Any tips for finding a good one? Thanks.

401K and IRA Questions

I've several tax-related questions. Background: (a) I just became eligible in my job to participate in the firm's 401K program--the firm makes a 3% contribution--since I'm over 50 (I'm 57), I'm told I can contribute a maximum of $20,500 during 2007; (b) I have a traditional IRA from the past; and (c) I also am self-employed in addition to working for the firm. My questions are: (1) Since I have ample assets, would it not make sense to immediately start contributing my ENTIRE salary into the 401K until I max out the $20,500 limit? (2) Related to #1, would it not make sense to change my withholding so that nothing is withheld, eg so that the entire amount of my gross is contributed to the 401K? (3) Is there any reason why I should not "roll over" my traditional IRA to the 401K? (4) Am I able to make a contribution to my IRA in addition to my contribution to the 401K? (5) If I don't roll over my IRA, should I convert it to a Roth?
