Filing US taxes homeless

I was homeless for part of the year last year. I'm filing late (with deferral, sorry I didn't bring this up on Askmefi when it would be more pertinent) because I just now got all the proper info together. Is there anything I should know about filing US taxes for a year in which I was occasionally homeless and/or unemployed?

Westside LA and tax advice

Our taxes this year are complicated by a number of factors, like getting married and dealing with the paperwork from three states. Turbotax is not going to give us the advice we need, so we would like to hire a professional for this round. We also may need professional financial advice in the future, so if the person or firm also offers those services that would be a bonus, but not essential. Anywhere in the Westside would work, though we are also willing to go further out. [more inside]

Financial planner in the Bay Area & knotty tax problem I'm afraid of!

I'm looking for a fee-based financial planner in the Bay Area to help me figure out one simple problem, and one knottier one. I have about $10k in CDs, and I'd like to invest it in a slightly smarter, similarly low-risk way (probably index funds) that I can add to slowly and in (relatively) small increments. I'd probably also like to start a 401k. Unrelatedly, as a child I was gifted $3k in shares of a single bluechip stock that I've never touched, and it's accrued value gradually but steadily over several decades. Recently, talking to a wiser friend, she pointed out that I've never paid taxes on it! I'm not sure how to deal with that, but probably can't avoid it much longer! How money works is confounding to me; I come from a working class background and am good at saving, but not saving wisely. Anyway, I'm primarily looking for financial planner suggestions, but if you've dealt with related stock/tax issues please share your experience and advice! Throwaway: infernalsockpuppeteer@gmail.com if you'd prefer.

1099 contract when I was told I'd be w2, how do I navigate this?

On Tuesday I drove across country to start a new role in the Bay Area. Prior to this I was working on a year-long contract which wasn't renewed. During the interview process I was looking for a full time role, but was convinced that this was a good opportunity, particularly to get my foot in the door back in the Bay Area where I'm originally from and still have family. During the interview I was asked specifically what type of contracting I would be open to and said that I was only interested in W2ing to a new role rather than becoming an independent contractor and billing, and I stated that I wasn't interested in 1099ing. The rate I provided reflected this as well. Turns out I've been onboarded as a 1099 and the rate that I was looking for as a W2. [more inside]

Years I did not file taxes

There were a few years when I did not pay state or federal taxes. I'm not sure exactly which years, but probably 2001-04 is the window of time I'm looking at. I put it off until the last minute, then got overwhelmed by the paperwork and the forms and just gave up. I didn't make much money any of those years. I'm not even sure I owed taxes - in most cases I probably was due for a (tiny) refund. For the past several years I have worked on becoming more financially responsible and have regularly paid my taxes on time. I tend to forget about those years but when I do think about them I'm concerned. I'm just not sure what steps to take to resolve this. I'm not even sure which years I did not file. [more inside]
