My house sold earlier this month. I am not buying a new house right away, but... maybe? How long can I wait? How will this affect taxes? And if I could buy property, should I in order to avoid penalties (if there are any)? You are not my lawyer or my accountant, but way more details with a little bit of drama after the jump.

I'm trying to find information about taxes and volunteer paid experimental (non-clinical) studies. I work in a lab, and one of our participants told us a week ago that if a study pays (the volunteer) over a certain amount, it gets taxed. Can anyone tell me if this is true and give me an official link? We're in Philadelphia, PA, USA. I can provide any other relevant information you need. Thanks!

I am trying to learn more/understand better my new tax situation as an independent consultant, and was hoping someone could help me with the following questions:
1. How do I compute my Net Earnings From Self-Employment (NESE)? What calculation is used?
2. Since I am excluded from Federal and State tax (my tax domicile is TX) for my foreign-earned income amount (I estimate it would be $87,500 for 2011) - can you break down how I can get the estimated tax payment amount for 2011?

As a US citizen, living and working abroad for many years, I recently heard of a new law that I must file tax returns on the US by Aug 31, 2011 or face a penalty. Anyone know about this? If US citizens live and pay taxes abroad, they generally are exempt up to $91,500.

I want to get a business license so I can buy products from businesses-only wholesale stores like Jetro. I would not have any income from the business. Would starting this business as a sole proprietor (no fictitious name) expose me to additional tax liabilities for the income from my regular job?
