Hi all, I claim exempt at two of my part-time jobs. However, I still get federal and state taxes withheld each paycheck (about 20% of each paycheck). Is my job doing this correctly? And should I be claiming exempt? I'm a graduate student and making about 13k a year. Thanks!
I'm looking into using a "Roth conversion ladder" to periodically convert some of my money from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, which I can then withdraw five years later in a tax-advantaged manner, despite being younger than the typical age to withdraw funds from IRAs. I have several questions about this. [more inside]
I was researching some tax questions on AskMe and learned about the "injured spouse" provision. Last tax year we had a situation where our refund was absorbed by an old outstanding tax bill my spouse incurred a decade before we were married and had forgotten about. I understand I can file as an injured spouse to recoup some of this loss that came from my withheld taxes, but my question is: what happens to the debt? Will my spouse just receive a new bill for that amount? If that's what happens we're probably best chalking it up as water under the bridge. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I was homeless for part of the year last year. I'm filing late (with deferral, sorry I didn't bring this up on Askmefi when it would be more pertinent) because I just now got all the proper info together. Is there anything I should know about filing US taxes for a year in which I was occasionally homeless and/or unemployed?
We donated a service provided by a third party (i.e. "not us") to a deduction-qualified church. The service has a clearly established price of $150. We didn't pay for the service, because the right to the service was given to us in compensation for the provider botching another instance of the service. Can we claim a deduction on our US federal taxes for the normal price of the service? [more inside]

I'm looking for a fee-based financial planner in the Bay Area to help me figure out one simple problem, and one knottier one. I have about $10k in CDs, and I'd like to invest it in a slightly smarter, similarly low-risk way (probably index funds) that I can add to slowly and in (relatively) small increments. I'd probably also like to start a 401k. Unrelatedly, as a child I was gifted $3k in shares of a single bluechip stock that I've never touched, and it's accrued value gradually but steadily over several decades. Recently, talking to a wiser friend, she pointed out that I've never paid taxes on it! I'm not sure how to deal with that, but probably can't avoid it much longer! How money works is confounding to me; I come from a working class background and am good at saving, but not saving wisely. Anyway, I'm primarily looking for financial planner suggestions, but if you've dealt with related stock/tax issues please share your experience and advice! Throwaway: email@example.com if you'd prefer.

Hi, I'm doing my 2014 taxes. I moved to New Jersey on Dec. 13, 2013 (from New York) and during the closing I paid the property tax for December, as well as 3 months of property tax in advance for the first Q of 2014. My question is: one my taxes, do I claim just the December taxes, or can I claim all the money I paid in 2013?

What rules do you use for estimating the value of things you give to charity? The organizations we donate to ask us to estimate the value for tax purposes ourselves, rather than doing it for us. I know we obviously should not use the full price that we paid for the item. I am wondering if it is okay to value items at, for example, what we might get for them off Craigslist (sometimes say 1/3 to 1/2 or in rare cases even 2/3 what we paid, depending on the item and condition), or whether we should be valuing at more like what I'd use for a yard sale price of like 1/10th or lower. Does it matter? And is there a corresponding tax consequence for the recipient organization, such that if I declare the higher value on our taxes that organization realizes some proportionate tax or penalty? If so I should probably just estimate lower in order to further benefit the charity. Thanks!
