I want to do the right thing: pay what I owe. Yet, I don't know who would be on my side! A tax preparer? An accountant, CPA, tax attorney, someone else? The years have caught up to me, true, but how will I live once I've acknowledged my debt? Can I pay my bills and the person/company helping me before the IRS freezes or sucks money out of my account? What if my "income" comes not from a job, rather a will/trust account? Add to this Obamacare and recently, a state tax. I am frightened. I figure I'll pay until the day I die. How many years will that be? [more inside]
I have a small mess on my hands with IRS Form 5405, and repaying the 2008 First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit. Looks like amending is going to be needed. In what order, and how, do I need to amend all of these returns? Bonus: also need to amend my 2015 taxes, anyway. [more inside]
In June, I started renting out a bedroom in my condo. I know I can deduct a percentage of some household expenses, but I want to make sure I 'm doing it right. I've been doing my taxes online with FreeTaxUSA for years. I'm really happy with them, but I've always just taken the standard deduction, and I'm wondering if it would be worth hiring someone this year (and then maybe going back to online next year). I have a part-time freelance thing that I do, in California. At what point do I need to get more formal about incorporating and such? [more inside]
The accountant who did my 2011 taxes did a lame job (on several levels). I was notified at some point in 2012 that she'd made en error on my federal return and that I owed more money. Now I just got a notice from the state, saying that I owe them money for the same year. [more inside]
Who is the best professional to call on before 2015 taxes are due? [more inside]
I've got some complicated taxes this year with two W2s and a few 1099s and living in multiple states. Yelp is not turning up anyone useful and the one local company I reached out to is not responding. I don't trust chains like H&R Block, but I don't mind a small company or independent professional. My budget is about $200-$250, might be able to do a little more. Boston, Dedham, Milton area preferred, but may be able to travel a bit further afield for someone with a great reputation. Recommendations are very much appreciated!
Building on an earlier question I'd like some personalized advice on using an accountant. [more inside]
My accountant screwed up my 2012 tax return, to the tune of a six-figure tax bill. You are not my lawyer, or my accountant, but hopefully you can help me figure out which I should contact: a tax lawyer or the accountant? [more inside]
Got my bill today from my accountant...Can anyone tell me if these fee's are legit? They seem pretty high and im hoping someone with knowledge in this could elaborate or confirm these fees are standard. Thank you!
We hate doing our taxes. Despite a professional familiarity with the basics of the tax code, or perhaps because of it, dealing with all of the paperwork really stresses me out, and my spouse doesn't like to do it either. Can you help us find an accountant in the Chicago area who will be competent and easygoing? Details inside. [more inside]
Is an accountant obligated to report unreported income to the IRS, if the conversation is not pertaining to the completion of my tax return? [more inside]
I need to file an amendment to my 2009 US federal and state taxes - I lived in the US (California specifically) half of the 2009 year and the rest of the year in Canada (GTA). I think this will be very simple (nothing but paycheck income to claim, no assets like trusts, property, stock, etc), but I am overwhelmed with the choices of accountants and tax people here, even the ones who specialize in cross border taxes. Can anyone recommend a decent tax person who could help with this? Preferrably someone near Etobicoke, although Mississauga/Oakville fine too. I've had numerous people warn me against the nearest chain type tax place, so I'm looking for someone independent or a small accounting type firm.
I am trying to fill out our first 1065 on Turbotax. We formed as an LLC with the State. The IRS doesn't have a designation for LLC, and considers us a Partnership. Turbotax is asking for each member of the LLC whether we are Limited Partners or General Partners. On the operation agreement, we are member, and actively run the business together. We did not specify a member-manager. On Turbotax, it is asking whether we are General or Limited partners and I am wondering which one I should select. [more inside]

I am suddenly making a grown-up salary, with a retirement plan and everything. I need to talk to a financial professional about optimizing my taxes and retirement and building a perfect(-ish) machine that I don't need to think about too much. I don't actually know what this person is called. Am I looking for an accountant? A financial advisor? A financial planner? Or something else? Please help me overcome my laughable naïveté. Thanks! How important is it for me to get an accountant now that I'm earning most of my income as a freelancer? Can I handle taxes on my own? [more inside]
I have several years of un-filed taxes. I'm in NYC. I've been, mostly, a freelancer. Things are getting scary. I need an understanding, skilled, non-judgmental accountant. [more inside]

I'm tired of doing my own taxes, and afraid of hiring another accountant. What is the best/cheapest tax software for a Canadian living in Quebec? I just can't deal with another accountant. I'm tired of being told something will cost 150$ and then get charged 500$ as if they didn't know what they needed to do. I want a tax software that is going to do the weird stuff for me. I don't depend or trust what the box says either! I have some rental income, some contract income, and some salary income. I also have a second (gf) who has simple income.
I'm inheriting $100,000. My parents are inheriting a lot more (around $1mil, but we're not sure the exact amount). Please give us advice. We're in the US (New Mexico). [more inside]

I need recommendations for an accountant, tax lawyer, or real estate lawyer in the Twin Cities. [more inside]
I've read How to pick an accountant for your online business and I'm ready to find a CPA, but a little lost on where to start. Online searches tell me who is good at SEO, but not who is good at tax advice. The few people I know with similar work situations are still doing their own taxes. I was comfortable doing that before, but my tax situation has grown complicated this year. So I'm looking for recommendations from people in similar situations. [more inside]

I'm meeting with a tax accountant for the first time on Wednesday. I'm a freelancer who gets my income from a number of sources (a combination of freelancing and part time salary work), so my taxes are pretty complicated. Two friends who do similar work recommended this guy, and said he got them big refunds last year, despite having almost no taxes withheld all year. I'm a newbie to taxes -- when meeting this guy, how can I tell whether he's on the up-and-up or whether he's going to get me audited?

Can you personally recommend a reasonably priced tax accountant in Washington, D.C.? I'd like to keep the cost under $500. Also, I think I'd prefer an accountant in a solo or small practice, for the personal touch, but if you've had a great experience with a big firm or chain, do tell. Finally, I'm looking for someone with an office that's Metro accessible and not too far outside the city. [more inside]

Looking for a recommendation for a good CPA or accountant in the DC, NoVA, or Southern Maryland area to field a set of somewhat-complicated questions about taxes. (Read: H&R Block is not going to cut it here.) The problem? All my close friends use TurboTax, and I'm reluctant to mass e-mail my entire contact list for recommendations, since I think the type of CPA (or accountant--is there a difference?) might matter in this situation and figuring out what flavor I need means disclosing more personal financial details than I'm comfortable with. Responsible Adult Filter: In the last year I've bought a condo, gotten engaged, and received a small inheritance. I work full-time and my wife and I both have sole proprietorships. I'd like to engage a financial advisor to look over our tax planning. Our situation doesn't change much year to year, so I'm envisioning just a one-time thing to see if we're missing any opportunities. Our estate plan and investments are already in good order. Do I want an accountant? A tax preparer? Financial planner? Any tips for finding a good one? Thanks.
