Are campaign expenses incured by the candidate tax deductible?

You Are Not My CPA Filter: I have a friend who is running for a small-time local political office (city charter commission) and who is paying all his campaign costs (signs, literature, etc.) out of his own pocket. Are these expenses tax deductible? We're having trouble wading through the thousands of Google results on business deductions to find an answer....

Tax deductions for freelancers?

Is my health insurance tax-deductible? I'm a freelancer who worked full-time hours for the same company 11 out of 12 months of last year. I received no benefits, and paid for my own health insurance. I'm not incorporated and I do not work at home.

Are my health insurance payments tax deductible? About 75% of them were through COBRA, and the rest was through the Freelancer's Union, if that's relevant.

And while I'm asking, are there other tax deductions for the semi-self-employed that I can take advantage of?

Thanks!
