I just sold my laptop on eBay... my first eBay sale. The buyer was in Poland. I've never shipped anything internationally. Looks like I can ship the package for about $40. It also looks like this sale might require someone to pay a Value Added Tax or import tax of some kind. What do I need to know about how this works? Do I pay or does he? Anything I should consider in the course of this sale?
I still haven't received my tax refund from way back in April. I've been in touch with the IRS, and my track record and paper trail are all on the up and up. I'm assured that it's all a misunderstanding, and once the bureaucratic machinations run their course, I will get my money. Will I? Has this ever happened to you? [more inside]
Are flexible spending plans a racket? Where I work we have a benefit called a "select benefit account" which seems to be called a "flexible spending plan" other places. We can add pre-tax money to an account which can be used for medical expenses. If the money isn't used in the year, then "you lose it". The tax benefits of this plan are obvious. What isn't so obvious is where that money is going when it is lost. Who is making money off this? [more inside]

My employer is paying my tuition, and told me that I could claim the amount as a deduction, because it's a taxable benefit. I did, and now I've received a letter from Revenue Canada asking me to submit a T2202 form and to tell them who had given me money for my tuition. (I filed online, which is why I hadn't submitted the T2202 before.) Was I wrong to claim this deduction? (You aren't my tax lawyer, but you know about these things.)
