I've had a difficult time figuring out my tax situation since I moved from the US and now I'm trying to get everything settled. I'm behind a few years and need someone to talk directly with the IRS on my behalf. Will I need an enrolled agent? A tax attorney? Both? Neither? Arg it's so confusing!

US-ian Tax questions: After a long hunt, this year I finally found a job (yay) several time-zones away from my husband and family (boo). The travel, additional housing, etc costs have consumed a lot of my income. Are any of those additional expenses potential write-offs for my taxes?

Looking for a recommendation for a good CPA or accountant in the DC, NoVA, or Southern Maryland area to field a set of somewhat-complicated questions about taxes. (Read: H&R Block is not going to cut it here.) The problem? All my close friends use TurboTax, and I'm reluctant to mass e-mail my entire contact list for recommendations, since I think the type of CPA (or accountant--is there a difference?) might matter in this situation and figuring out what flavor I need means disclosing more personal financial details than I'm comfortable with.

Responsible Adult Filter: In the last year I've bought a condo, gotten engaged, and received a small inheritance. While I've used TurboTax to file in the past, I think I'm in a little over my head now. Does anyone know a trustworthy, reasonably priced accountant in Chicago who is still accepting new clients?

I have exercised stock options and taken possession of a small number of shares. I have not sold anything, but am wondering how screwed I am, tax-wise. First, do I have to declare the value of the stock as "income" for the year that I acquired it? Second, if I should sell it, do I add the money I receive from that sale to my regular taxable income? Do I deduct the amount I paid in? Is the net difference subject to other taxes? Is this handle-able by an average person or do I need an accountant?
