I found an artist for my first tattoo! I like the artist a lot, we communicate well, and the shop has a good reputation. But is safety something I need to worry about in a well-regarded tattoo shop? And how do I determine for myself if it's a safe place to get needles jammed into my skin? [more inside]
YANMTA (You Are Not My Tattoo Artist): I'm getting a tattoo. I absolutely know what I want, where I'm going (though I haven't been to the parlor yet since it's out of town) and this is definitely happening. What I want to know is how your (or your friends') fineline or scrimshaw-style and/or tattoo with lettering looks 5, 10, 20 years down the line, with regards to thinking ahead with design. "Let's go now and have the truth at all hazards." This sentence is extremely clear in context, but knowing Peter Wimsey, it's also probably a (mis)quote. Please help me find the source so I can get a tattoo with a clear conscience. [more inside]
I met someone today who explained that their tattoo was based on a style adopted by Indian women during British Occupation which served as a way of turning off British men who might otherwise want to take them away for various unsavory purposes. The women would in some cases get these tattoos on their necks and faces. Although the person told me the Indian term for this particular style of tattooing I failed to write it down, and now cannot seem to google up this phenomenon. Was hoping someone knew about it, what it's called, or could provide some links to more information.
I have never once considered getting a tattoo, until now. I have a fairly large scar just below the belt line on my back, just above the 'ol butt cheek. I had a bone graft when I was a teenager, and have been used to this scar peeking out on my back when I wear shorts in the summer, etc. 20 years later, and now I've thought about getting a tattoo around it- something whimsical, snarky, funny, not sure. I have an idea for a half-and-half forearm tattoo (like this) where one half will be filled in such a way to represent computation, computers, electronics, artificial intelligence, something like that. A friend of mine wants to get another tattoo, and the phrase he's picked to get inked is this: "I am the angel of death, not mercy." He would like for the ink to be in Latin, so obviously he wants to make sure the translation is spot-on. Any Latin scholars able to help with this? Thank you so much!
I got a new tattoo but also dye my hair. I have some questions about the increased chance of an allergic reaction when using hair dye while having tattoos. Basically, is doing an allergy spot test on the arm with one brand of hair dye sufficient for safety across other brands, or do I have to test the specific dye? (how similar are hair dyes?) After years of careful consideration, I've finally decided to get a tattoo. I know what I want to get, but I don't have a specific design, and I don't know which tattoo parlor to go to. How do I find these things? I live in SF, but would be willing to travel for a really, really good artist. [more inside]
Lately I have been catching myself remembering that I am going to die one day. I think, like like Steve Jobs that remembering this fact is important. I'd like to get a tattoo on my hand, or somewhere visible as a daily reminder, "you are going to die one day". However I would like to find a symbol that represents the opportunity and responsibility of that fact, not the fear of it (like a skull). Any help?
I don't know anything about how much tattoos cost. I know I see a lot of small tattoo parlors all over the place. I got to wondering how many tattoos they would need to do a month in order to stay in business. How much does it typically cost to run a tattoo parlor?

My partner got an eyeliner tattoo today and it didn't go well. Needless to say she hates it, refuses to go out in public, and is edging pretty close to depression over this. It doesn't look that bad to me, but I'm the first to admit I'm fashion blind. Basically, the technician overdid it on one side resulting in the liner extending past the eye with a slight curl up, it's not a style that's unheard of, but it's not my partner's style at all. [more inside]
I've finally decided on a tattoo. Yey! I'm trying to put together a mockup on my Mac, but Pages doesn't allow me to any kerning. This makes the text look weirdly spaced. Any suggestions for software on a mac that will allow me to kern? Freely, if possible? [more inside]

I have a friend who is very proud of her tattoos. I would like to get her a special gift. My first thought was a photography session, but her brother is a photographer and has already given her such sessions in the past. I had a crazy idea and I was wondering if there's any reality to it: Is there any such thing as scanning tattoos? For instance, like pressing the body part with the tattoo against a flatbed scanner and creating a high-quality artistic print of the tattoo itself? Or does this separate the tattoo for the reality of its place on her body in such a way to invalidate the whole purpose of it? If this is a stupid idea, can you suggest others? Thanks!
I'm looking for a picture of a specific nuclear test in a book or other printed resource, or a hi-res photo online. The image in question is here. There seems to be conflicting information about whether this is the first nuclear test (Trinity), I really don't think it is. [more inside]

I tried google Translate and got a bunch of spellings, but many of them had different senses of the word. I want the one that means love as both a noun and a verb- like we do in English. It's going to be a tat, so I don't want to accidently be wearing something on my body that's lewd. [more inside]
