My partner would like to get a tattoo on his upper arm. The subject he's chosen is adorable and not problematic. However, I'm having trouble with the concept of a new, permanent thing I'll be looking at every day. [more inside]
Can you recommend high quality tattoo shops that take walk-ins in Buffalo? I'll be there for a few days at the end of June. Although I grew up in the Buffalo suburbs, I haven't been back in over 15 years. I'm excited about the possibility of getting a tattoo while on this trip. [more inside]
I've really wanted a tattoo tribute to my favourite artist for several years now, but I am stuggling to find someone who can do it for me, in her style, ideally in London. [more inside]
I'd like to get a tattoo which expresses the following concepts or mantras; just do it/don't overthink things/say yes to all opportunities and if live gives you lemons - make lemonade/be grateful for what you have. However, I'm having trouble coming up with ideas for how to represent these things graphically. [more inside]
On Sunday I get my first ever tattoo and likely my last. It is in Hebrew meaning it reads right to left. So, your advice would be appreciated. [more inside]
At the seasoned age of 38, I'm seriously considering getting my first tattoo. I've been thinking about a particular design for the better part of a decade, but damn, I'm having a hard time tracking down the right person in New York City and need recommendations. [more inside]
I never loved tattoos until I looked at some done with all blue ink. I think they are beautiful and I've always liked blue against my skin tone (pale and cool pinkish.) I have some slight scarring on my right forearm that bothers me and I think a band of tattoo around that part might look nice. I'm 46 years old and have a head of longish mostly grey hair. What should I consider before I take this impulse any further than a sketch and some googling? [more inside]
My wife has been making small stick and poke tattoos (mostly on me) for a while now with great results - she's getting pretty good at it. She now wants to upgrade to an actual machine. We're looking for a reputable guide on what to buy and how to learn how to use a machine for simple tattoos. Is there such a thing available on the internets? I saw a lot of dodgy-looking things so I wanted to ask the hive mind before making a bad choice. [more inside]
I am planning on getting a pair of tattoos, and think that the handpoke/primitive pointillism look would work really well with the design I have in mind. I have a few questions regarding handpoke vs regular machine tattooing, and hope someone here has some experience in this, and advice to give. [more inside]
I am currently obsessed with the style of tattoo done by Pony Reinhardt at her studio Tenderfoot Studio. I signed up for her email list in the hopes she will do an East Coast tour and I could schedule an appointment, but there are no guarantees there. Are there Tattoo Artists working in New York (or a nearby state) who have a similar aesthetic?
I'm going to get my first tattoo for my 30th birthday. My question is, where is the best place on your body to get a small tattoo (probably a couple words a few inches across)? I want to be able to conceal it in case of future workplaces that frown on tattoos, I want it to age as well as possible, and I'd ideally like to be able to see it without the use of a mirror.
My friend and I have a particular history and we want to get a buddy tattoo. Naturally I'm going to ask you to verify a translation. [more inside]
Tattoofilter: I have a bunch of moles. I'm considering turning them into a constellation. That's great, you say, just draw some lines between them. That's cute, I say, but I don't want to do that. I want to decorate individual moles gradually over time, so the constellation changes. Help me brainstorm small delicate designs that meet some or all of the following criteria: [more inside]
Anniversary date concept: while in Boston, we get tattoos (each of us has a small, straightforward one we've been wanting) and then eat fondue. Ideally without spending an hour on the T in between. Where can our inky, cheesy desires be satisfied?
I'm looking for suggestions of traditional tattoo artists in Myanmar who are hygienic and willing to work on foreigners. We'll be in the country in January (in the major tourist spots), and my SO would like to have a leg piece done. Many thanks for any help.
My best friend has a skin condition that presents in a distribution of dark spots scattered across his skin. He needs to reclaim his skin & overwrite this condition. I am reaching out for help to understand the full range of body art options available (focus is currently on tattoos) so we can work through a range of creative inputs. [more inside]
Hi MeFi! I'm going to get another tattoo in a week or so and I chose an artist I absolutely adore. My question is about tipping the artist when the studio is owned by them. In the past, I have always tipped but I've always heard the tipping is for when the person performing the service is not the owner. In this situation, I'm not sure what to do since the price is set by the hour, not the piece, and it's the owner doing it. So, to tip or not to tip? Thanks!
Thinking of getting first ever tattoo. I have Googled, and I have asked around, but I would like more data points from the permanently-decorated Metafilter crowd. [more inside]
I'm planning on getting a new tattoo but it's been so long since my last one that I need to find a new artist. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone good in Toronto? [more inside]
I'm looking for quotes and visual symbols for something that is beautiful but temporary. Whether it's about life, love, passion, or something physical, give me all your ideas. Bonus points if it's brief and elegant enough for a tattoo.
I've been doing a great deal of research on the subject of tattoos and body markings and a question I've come across frequently (and found correspondingly very little literature regarding) is the use of tattoos or brands to indicate a punishment, specifically of crimes like piracy or mutiny. Is there any information on this topic? [more inside]

A while back, I was insomnia-browsing, and I came across either an illustration or a photograph of a tattoo, related to the saying below. Unfortunately, I can't remember which. Either way, it was black-and-white, in a simple engraved style. Any ideas what this illustration could be? If it was a tattoo, it seemed like it was probably copied from or inspired by a historical illustration. [more inside]
My husband and I are honeymooning on Gran Canaria and, in a silly mood, got henna tattoos from a stall on the oceanside. Back at the hotel, I googled for tips on henna tattoo care and discovered that the vendor used "black henna" containing PPD, which can cause severe skin reactions and further health problems. I'm sure looking at a portfolio is one way, but beyond that, what are some good things to look into? Word of mouth? Online reviews? I haven't gotten one since I was eighteen, which is many a moon ago. I'm in Milwaukee, if that is relevant. Thanks!
In a week or so, I'm getting my first tat, and I'm seeking proficient Thai speakers to help me avoid an unfortunate 'choice.' Yep, that's the word in question. [more inside]
I'm interested in recommendations for tattoo artists who are experienced in white tattoo work. I live in the Boston area, but I regularly travel to San Francisco, Austin, and Atlanta, so recommendations there are also welcome, and if there's someone especially awesome in other places, I could make a fun trip out of this project. I found an artist for my first tattoo! I like the artist a lot, we communicate well, and the shop has a good reputation. But is safety something I need to worry about in a well-regarded tattoo shop? And how do I determine for myself if it's a safe place to get needles jammed into my skin? [more inside]
YANMTA (You Are Not My Tattoo Artist): I'm getting a tattoo. I absolutely know what I want, where I'm going (though I haven't been to the parlor yet since it's out of town) and this is definitely happening. What I want to know is how your (or your friends') fineline or scrimshaw-style and/or tattoo with lettering looks 5, 10, 20 years down the line, with regards to thinking ahead with design. "Let's go now and have the truth at all hazards." This sentence is extremely clear in context, but knowing Peter Wimsey, it's also probably a (mis)quote. Please help me find the source so I can get a tattoo with a clear conscience. [more inside]
I met someone today who explained that their tattoo was based on a style adopted by Indian women during British Occupation which served as a way of turning off British men who might otherwise want to take them away for various unsavory purposes. The women would in some cases get these tattoos on their necks and faces. Although the person told me the Indian term for this particular style of tattooing I failed to write it down, and now cannot seem to google up this phenomenon. Was hoping someone knew about it, what it's called, or could provide some links to more information.
I have never once considered getting a tattoo, until now. I have a fairly large scar just below the belt line on my back, just above the 'ol butt cheek. I had a bone graft when I was a teenager, and have been used to this scar peeking out on my back when I wear shorts in the summer, etc. 20 years later, and now I've thought about getting a tattoo around it- something whimsical, snarky, funny, not sure.
