I want to work in education. I want to work with English language learners with learning disabilities. I want to find a job in Taiwan upon graduating college. Eventually I want to work in Scandinavia. I don't particularly want to work in the American education system. What is the market like for American certified teachers who want to work with these types of students in Taiwan? [more inside]
Are there any stores in Los Angeles that might carry this version of Sherlock - Season 1 (region 3 Taiwan version with Traditional Chinese Subtitles)? I need it quicker than YesAsia's 7-14 day shipping estimate.
Hi MeFites, Here's the deal. I booked the tickets but have done nothing yet about actual planning. I tend to favor seat-of-the pants arrive and go with the flow, but that works for longer trips. Mrs. Gotanda prefers an itinerary and reservations, and we really have 4 actual days. So, we need a happy medium. [more inside]
I've searched previous instances of congee showing up in comments on the Green, but very few actual recipes. None of the recipes I've found online even agree on the rice-to-water ratio or cooking time. Recipes from any nation, savory or sweet and any serving tips or suggestions most welcome!
I ordered a jacket from Taiwan on Oct 2. According to the tracking ID, it arrived in Frankfurt on Oct 5. There have been no further updates on the "foreign information" tab since then. Why is it stuck there for 11 days now? [more inside]
Earlier today I watched a short clip of 2 teams playing a game of... what, exactly? It was an indoor game, and there were field hockey / small soccer goals on each end of the court. Like soccer there were around 10 people for each team, but unlike soccer players seemed to use only their hands to pass the ball -- they couldn't kick it or dribble it, but they could bounce it to each other or into the goal. The ball itself was smaller than a basketball, maybe about the size of a small volleyball. Anyone know what this game might be? This game was between teams from mainland China and Taiwan and the clip was from a Hong Kong news show, so that all leads me to suppose this might be a game played only in Asia. Bonus points if you know the name of it in Chinese!
I am traveling to Taiwan for about two weeks very soon. I will be there with about 20 fellow students from my university. Being able to communicate amongst us while about Taipei will be pretty important. What do you recommend to use around the city? Inexpensive and easy would be great. [more inside]

I live in Toronto, and I have to go to Taipei in June for my brother's wedding. (I've never been to Taiwan.) In addition to the week i spend in Taiwan, I also want to go somewhere culturally interesting with good food and beaches, and i want to either fly there on my way to taiwan, or i want fly there and back from taiwan. Where can i fly to and from taiwan, cheaply? Or where can i stop en route to taiwan, without it breaking the bank? (Right now, my ideal beach vacation stop is Bali, but it appears to be an expensive flight from Taiwan, and it isn't a place i can get to as a stop en route.) [more inside]

Ice Cream Filter: When in Taiwan a few years back, I enjoyed an ice cream that was described to me as "chinese potato." It was purple in color, and it tasted slightly sweet, but otherwise relatively benign. What the hell did I likely eat? (Googling brings up very nearly nothing.)
I've twice bought the same cosmetic packaging components from a specific Taiwanese manufacturer through a US-based middleman. I'm ready to re-order and want to circumvent the middleman and order directly from the manufacturer who we will call BG Manufacturing. There are some fairly compelling motivations and rationale for doing so. Important details inside. [more inside]
