Whenever I buy a new suit or pair of wool pants, the tailor always gives me these leftover trimmings. What do I do with these? Are they useful for anything? [more inside]
I have a wonderful peacoat with a hood that I have worn out (it is threadbare and beyond care). I've been searching for a replacement for the past 5 winters and can't find one that meets my specs. Does my jacket exist anywhere or should I have it made? [more inside]
I have been tasked with finding a tailor in or very near to Tribeca in New York City. They ideally are open at 7:00am or open until 7:00pm. And this tailor can take in the waist of a pair of pants without making one of the rear pockets off center to the seam. Chinatown is fine as long as it's west of the Canal street 456/NQR station. Other Manhattan neighborhoods considered if the work is really spectacular and inexpensive. [more inside]
My girlfriend's favorite dress in the world was lost last year. We have pictures of it on her and pictures of it from the manufacturer (no longer in business). Who can we go to to get a dress made in Atlanta? [more inside]
I need to get some jeans hemmed. I don't want them to look home-sewn. I'd like the hems to look like they do when they're bought. Can someone recommend a tailor either in Cypress or near I-10 and Washington?
I'm looking for a wonderful woman who altered my clothes about 10 years ago. I believe she was known for fitting plus sized women well. She made some major changes to some clothes as I lost weight, and did a fantastic job. I'm back in he area but can't seem to find the shop. Does anyone remember this shop? Is it still there or somewhere else?
Every time I try out a button-up shirt, no matter if it's too big or too small, I get outward-facing ripples on my shoulders (like so and so). Why? And short of getting a completely bespoke shirt, is there anything a tailor can do? [more inside]
I want to have some kurtas and/or salwar kameez made and haven't had much luck figuring out a source. I'm in NYC and a local source would be fine, but I'd be willing to do something like eShakti. I know there are lots of stores that sell this stuff, but most of it is in colors/patterns that are too bright and made out of non-natural fabrics. Basically I'm looking for cool, shady, long-sleeved summer clothes in natural fibers, so any other non-Indian sources would be welcome, too.
I would like to have a few shirts made, I think? And maybe, eventually a suit? Please explain the basics of a professional tailor. [more inside]
Roommate and I took advantage of Jos A Banks buy 1 get 3 free offer and now have 4 suits that need to be tailored. Are there any quality places that do this for a good price (or would offer a discount for the number of items)? The store charges $40 each and has 2 week turnaround so looking for any recommendations that would be less! We're located in Streeterville but willing to travel for a good deal. [more inside]
Everything I own is falling apart at once, and contradictory Yelp reviews have left me paralyzed when trying to figure out which Chicago-area tailors and cobblers to go to. Beyond short-term emergency repairs, I also have some more complicated long-term tailoring needs (both men's and women's clothes). Help me find people who can repair my clothing and shoes! I just got a barkcloth jumpsuit that's in need of some alterations. I'm looking for a tailor in the Cambridge/Somerville area that could help me out with this. The tailor my friends keep recommending to me is in Roslindale, and the tailors I've found via Yelp have worked exclusively in menswear. Who's a good tailor on this side of the river that works with womens wear and could help me out with my vintage find?
I am looking for a reasonably priced seamstress or tailor in Austin. I love to buy these 70s / 80s silk shirts from thrift shops, they're lots of fun. But the collars are dorky thin, I'd like to have a seamstress or tailor take the collars off. [more inside]
Looking for a professional or skilled amateur the metro area to make some clothes for me by cutting up and copying existing clothes! [more inside]
After reading a recommendation here for the utterly delightful Ms. Rumphius, I started thinking about kids books about travel that I used to enjoy. When I was a kid I loved a picture book about a kingdom where everyone had to wear black all the time because the prince or princess had died and the kingdom was in mourning, and an apprentice tailor traveled the world by boat and learned about clothing in different cultures and eventually came home and made beautiful colorful clothing for everyone in the kingdom and the sadness over the kingdom was lifted. I have searched and searched and can't remember anything more about it. Can anyone remember? It was a lovely book and I would like to share it with my daughter.
I'd like someone to draft a custom men's shirt pattern for me, so that I can make dress shirts from it for Mr. Needlegrrl. I am quite proficient with sewing, but not with men's patterning, and collars? ugh. Would a tailor do this? other suggestions? [more inside]
I'm getting married at the beginning of May, and would like to purchase a nice suit for the day. But I want a particular look, and something that is going to last me for years that I can wear regularly, not just for one day. [more inside]
I would like to find a seamstress or tailor to make a custom pencil skirt for me that I can wear to work (so, stuffy business fabric). My attempts to google a solution have not been successful. I either find places that want to charge me $300 or more (nope!), places that do alterations (I need it made from scratch), or places that make custom clothing for men but not women, or brides but not non-brides. I am located in lower Manhattan but have a subway card and am willing to use it. Can anyone suggest where I can go to have a nice suit-like pencil skirt created for me?
Please help me find a tailor that can alter skinny jeans properly. So far, I have had bad luck with the two I've tried. [more inside]
I have this dress. The waist of the dress hits me below my actual waist (it hits where my hips start), because I'm short. Could a tailor fix the dress by raising the waist seam to where my actual waist is, or should I send the dress back? [more inside]
I've recently discovered the difference that quality tailoring can make to the quality of my wardrobe. Now I'm looking for a great tailor in London who can alter my clothes at a price I can afford. Any recommendations? [more inside]

I recently bought a relatively cheap men's sport/dress shirt that I love, but while it fits perfectly around the neck and chest the cuffs are about 1/2 an inch too long and there's just a bit too much fabric in the sleeves for my taste. What would I want to ask a tailor before having them alter my shirt, to ensure they wont mess it up/make it look bad? [more inside]

Need recommendation for a tailor on or near the UWS of Manhattan, NYC . Standard stuff, mostly altering off the rack shirts, pants, and jackets, nothing too extreme but should be familiar with vintage and custom-mades. Would prefer quality over speed or cost.
Can I get cheap tee shirts tailored so they don't choke me to death? [more inside]
I have this dress, and while it fits well at the waist and through my ribs and I've worn it before, it squishes my 30F chest in a way that does not look flattering at all. There is not enough extra fabric to let the dress out, and I can't buy a larger size. Whom in Seattle can I trust to do a great job at converting the zippered back (all the way to my nape, with mesh fabric upper half) to a lace corset back? Any other ideas?

Every time I call asking for an estimate, they tell me to bring my clothes in to get an estimate. I would waste time and money driving all over town!

I don't know much about suits, but I do know that the one I own is too big. Tell me (A) very general information about tailors, such as price, how long an alteration takes, and so on, and (B) recommendations particular to Los Angeles, especially affordable ones in reasonable driving distance from West Hollywood. My mother is currrently in Asia and wants her tailor there to make a sack dress for my baby.
