Please recommend someone to hem jeans in Chicago. I'm not that short (5'5" ish); I wear heels (2-3 inches most days), yet all my jeans are 5-6 inches too long. Have you found a tailor/drycleaner in Chicago that hems jeans without making them look disastrously altered? [more inside]

I've heard rumors that there's a talented Chinese bespoke tailor that comes to SF and books a meeting room where he takes orders and measurements. He then flies back to China (or possibly it was Hong Kong) and assembles the suits. A month or two later, when the suit is completed, he ships it to the customer. Supposedly this man makes a superior quality product for a reasonable price. [more inside]

Alterations/Tailor in Chicago. Anyone have a personal recommendation? The drycleaner in my building does it, but I want to know if anyone can recommend a tailor personally. It's a dress (made of a recycled polyester with a water repellent finish) which needs some refitting through the bodice. Doesn't have to be a commercial tailor, either. If you know a good seamstress who is willing to do piecework, that's great. I just want someone I trust picking apart & resewing my dress.

Can anyone recommend a tailor in Seattle or the Eastside? I need alterations done on several pieces of women's clothing, somewhat more complicated than just doing hems, so I would like a real tailor, not a dry cleaning shop that does alterations. I've already Googled, but would much prefer a referral to someone whose services you have actually used.

It would be great if people could share their favourite suppliers/retailers/tailors for affordable, quality shirts. I'm talking about shirts which are either interesting, different or vintage. I'd be especially keen on those with detachable collars - this was in fact the reason for my asking the question. [more inside]

Can anyone recommend a skilled, reasonably-priced tailor in Los Angeles (preferably on the westside)? Mostly I'm looking for someone who can do some significant suit alterations and occasionally make an outfit from scratch if I provide the material and pattern. I really like the seamstress at my dry cleaners and am happy to have her hem skirts and pants when needed, but I'm looking for someone to do some more advanced work. Any ideas? Thanks!

I want to own a suit that looks like it was made for me. As I see it, there are two ways to do this, one involving buying a good suit that's pretty close in all the important ways and then multiple trips to a good tailor to have it altered to fit, the other involving a made-just-for-me suit. How do I decide which, or is there another path I'm missing? Once that decision's out of the way, how do I find a tailor I trust to walk me through one process or the other? [more inside]

I'm at the point in my career where I'll need to buy more business attire. I've had a little trouble buying off the rack stuff that fits well, due to my build (athletic, but stocky, rather thick-necked. 10 years of rugby will do that). So I'm curious about tailored clothes What can I expect? In what price range should I expect to pay? Are there some things that just aren't worth seeing a tailor for?

Weddings and formal affairs oh boy! This next year will be chock full and since my regular job attire does not include a suit I am clueless when it comes to what is necessary and/or nice to have. I do not need anything different or special, but well-fitted is a must. What type of suits are best all year round, easy to alter (by a tailor, not myself), and just look good?

My favourite pair of shorts is about to die. They're the best shorts I've ever owned and seem to be irreplaceable in this age of cargo-style saturation. How bizarre, difficult and pricey would it be to approach a tailor/seamstress and ask them to dissect the pattern and clone the shorts with new material?

ClothingFilter: I need to find a tailor to make some alterations to an expensive sportcoat. The retailer I bought it from only does alterations to new items, and their tailor works for them... I've always had good experiences with that tailor, but the other things I've gotten done (through the place that dry cleans my clothes) really sucked. How can I find a good tailor besides trial and error?

Wow, this is like popcorn. OK then.
All youse New Yorkers: anybody recommend a decent tailor? This is for some detail work. My wife got this amazing Vivienne Tam skirt at a secondhand store in the East Village, which needs to be taken in a little, and the fabric is like neoprene. She doesn't feel right just bringing it in to the local drycleaner/tailor/laundry, and I can't say I blame her.
