Fussy person seeks labeling solution for tiny physical objects

I carry around a lot of small expensive/annoying-to-replace objects, like my phone, tablet, battery packs, earbuds, eyeglasses and wallet. I'd love your help in figuring out how to label them all neatly, permanently and unobtrusively. Difficulty level: I am absurdly fussy and precise, including about aesthetics. [more inside]

Poisoning the well of Facebook's facial recognition

I don't like that Facebook knows my face, so I'm tagging myself (and asking that friends tag me) in a lot of random photos. Does this work? Any tips to do this more efficiently? Is the algorithm already smart enough to detect that something fishy is going on?

How many things can be tracked over the internet?

In addition to the well known sites for tracking Planes and Ships I've recently discovered I can track SHARKS! What other things can be tracked on the internet? I'm specifically keen to see sites with a map of the world (or I suppose a more local region if that is appropriate) with all the things moving around in real time, but any aggregation of real world data would also be interesting.

Has anyone ever studied the long-term effects of tagging wild animals?

I am just wondering what the long-term affects are in regards to tagging mammals & animals in the wild? Does anyone ever analyze or study what effects the tag itself will have on that particular animal or the nearby respective animal community that has not been tagged? Do other animals recognize the tags as foreign objects or do most species accept the tag as a normal bodily feature after it has been attached? Is there a species where the tags were deemed "wierd" or foreign enough to cause that animal to be ousted by others? [more inside]

Graffiti in the pre-internet era

I am currently working on a young adult novel set in a small Massachusetts town at the tail end of the '80s in which one of the protagonists is a graffiti tagger. Unfortunately, I am less familiar with some of the most basic aspects of graffiti writing and the preparations for it, particularly in that era. Below the fold are some questions. [more inside]

Is there a better/faster way to operationalize the coding of messy text data?

I'm trying to tag and code about 4000+ unique paragraphs of data. These are opinion responses to two similar questions. Help me tame my embarassing mp3 mess

I have a 2002-era problem: a big library of Mp3s, many ripped from physical CDs I own, some downloaded from iTunes, others left over from when I merged music collections with my then partner. They are completely disorganised. Some albums are incomplete, most lack album art, hundreds of individual songs are just kicking around in a big folder of their own. What's the best way to tame the mess? (This question has been asked before, but I imagine best solutions have changed since 2008). [more inside]
