My google-fu is failing me on this one.
Years ago I found a program that would take all the email I recieved, add it to a database and then it would run some algorithm to associate all of the email information together; essentially tagging it all. I was then able to open up their web interface and search for any topic I wished from my past emails.
Think of tagging bookmarks ala del.ic.ious but for email but it auto-tagged everything on it's own.
Basically the flow of email would be Exchange server -> "this program" -> Outlook. I vaguely recall that the program was written in Java and was freely available.

Say I wanted to fill the genre tags of my whole mp3 library automatically.
Say I trusted the last.fm community enough to use the three most used tags for a certain song/album listed there (for example: New Order's Ceremony would get "80s" "new wave" and "post-punk").
Say I wanted to do this automatically.
Say I had a Mac.

I'm doing some research, a timeline, on the evolution of user-experience on the web. I know, via AskMeFi (thank you!) that it was late in 2005 when amazon.com began testing tagging in general but does anyone know, specifically, when amazon.com began allowing users to flag or vote on the relevance of individual tags?

My friends and I are working - and when I say working, I should add that it is with only very vague direction as we are almost all self-taught - on a web project which we think would be very useful to many people. It is in some small respect tangentially similar to Metafilter, but would not compete with it. Are there any out-of-the-box products, commercial or free, that allow a similar question-and-answer (or comment-and-answer) functionality, where anyone can post and/or comment? [more inside]

MP3 tagging: I have hundreds and hundreds of songs tagged with the title like this: Stairway_To_Heaven. In a Word file, fixing this is trivial, and I could save that to a txt file. Is there tagging software that will rename by pulling from a text file? Windows only, please.

I need to find networked photo management software, similar in function to Picasa or ACDSee, but with the ability to share "tags" between multiple users over a network. The products I've been able to find all allow tagging, but those tags are available only to that user, and my company needs to search the photo tags without each user having tagged each photo individually. I would like to build and host a del.icio.us clone on my Mac (Intel iMac running Tiger). It need not be accessible outside of my machine, although if you can advise me how to do that while still keeping my machine secure, that would be a very nice plus. I am able to build simple command-line apps in Unix and puzzle some stuff out, but I am very much not a l33t hax00r. Can anyone walk me through the process very simple step by very simple step? Is there software available that lets me use tagging (a la del.icio.us and Flickr) to tag Word (or other) files on my local computer?
Here's the scenario. I am new to a job where I write a lot of reports. Although these aren't cookie cutter reports, it is often helpful to look at old reports when writing new ones. I would love to be able to organize them by overlapping themes so the collection of files is more useful to me. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I'd like to be able to plug in a few tag words and find just what I need. Can you help?

Like many people, I have a "best of" directory on my web site where I keep various files I find on the net that I want to keep around in case the original host goes away. Right now it's just a raw directory of files, mostly with their original often cryptic filenames. I'd like some kind of drop-in file manager that would let me easily add descriptions and tags. Users could click on tags to narrow the listing to, say, just "flash toys" or "zero wing spinoffs".

Tags. They're used everywhere on the Web now to categorize stuff, but not everything has a unique name. Do you tag stuff in the most individual way possible, or do you let tags overlap? For instance, if I post a picture of my computer screen and one of my house, do I tag them both "windows"? Or do I tag one "Microsoft Windows" and the other "house windows"? Is someone named "Chris Smith" stuck with being conglomerated with other people with the same name, or should I ask Chris Smith what his middle name is and add it to the tag? It's easy for New York City to get the tag "NYC", but should photos of Springfield, Illinois be "Springfield", "Springfield, IL", or "Springfield, Illinois"?

Document management. I get a lot of paper documents (bills, letters, invoices, etc) and want to catalog them digitally. I want a program that scans a sheet (or multiple sheets), turns them into PDF and catalogs them (title, category, and maybe even del.icio.us style tags). Acrobat will do the first two stages, but I want something that does the cataloging too. Any suggestions? OCR not needed whatsoever.

Can anyone help me find a personal information management utility that will let me "tag" different items (with multiple tags), much as one can do with photos in Adobe Photoshop Album? I'd like to be able to keep track of things by tags, not just a simple hierarchical tree and searching. My Google-fu is not powerful enough to find what I am looking for - the closest I have come is finding flags in ActionOutline, but they aren't customizable or useful for finding things.
