I hate Seafair. Is there anything family friendly to do just slightly outside of the greater Seattle area? Bellingham, perhaps? Please, no zoos or waterparks; I've done them all already.

Best beach on the Washington state Pacific Coastline?

Best beach on the Washington state Pacific Coastline? Taking a looong day-trip (rain or shine) to the Pacific Coast this Saturday from Seattle. Anyone have any recommendations for the best beach with access on the Washington coastline?

Also... I want to head South (Olympia) to the coast and come back through the North (via Bainbridge ferry) on the way home to Seattle. Anyone ever done this? Is this crazy to think to do (by simply driving and not stopping very much) in one day?

(Any suggestions as to good eateries/sights that can be easily accessed en route to or from the coast are welcomed as well.)

What to do in the Pacific Northwest next week?

What should I do in Seattle, Portland, and points between, during the first week of December? I'll be in the Pacific Northwest December 5-9 (so, next Wednesday through Sunday). My current plan is to spend the 5th in Seattle, then drive down to Portland for the 6th and 7th, and be in Tacoma on the 8th. I leave from Seattle again on the 9th around lunchtime. (A whirlwind tour, I know, but it has a purpose.) I will have a rental car to take me wherever I want to go.

Are there any special events I should make a point of attending? Any fun winter/holiday/December-related activities I shouldn't miss? Any great and not-overly-expensive restaurants/coffee shops/stores I should visit? Any especially gorgeous scenery I should take in?

I'm a pretty outdoorsy, casual girl who would prefer a nice hike (weather permitting) or hour spent wandering a good bookstore, compared to visiting the trendiest bars. I do love a great meal, but I'm not likely to dress up too much for it. I spent a day in Seattle a couple years ago, so I've got the space needle and Pike Place market checked off my list. What else should I check out?

How are the different neighborhoods in Tacoma?

O wise Tacoma familiar folks of Metafilter: What parts of Tacoma could be described as "up and coming" and what parts are currently just plain bad? We're considering getting a house up there, both for affordability reasons and because when my wife gets her Masters, she'll probably work somewhere in Tacoma, Seattle, or parts in between, and that's a bit of a commute from Olympia. However, neither of us have ever actually lived in Tacoma, so we're not very familiar with the different specific parts of town.

We're moving to Tacoma, WA...

Any Tacoma Me-Fites? We're moving to Tacoma WA and need recommendations for various things.

So my husband and I are taking the plunge into home-ownership, and that means we are moving from Seattle to Tacoma (since the cost of a house is about half of what is in Seattle).

Assuming the deal goes through and we get the house (and we are hopeful even though we know the deal isn't final until we have the keys in our sweaty little hands), we'd be living in S. Tacoma, off S. 38th St near I-5.

I'd appreciate recommendations for the following services, but feel free to include something else that you think would be helpful (a great grocery store, restaurants, etc.)

1. moving company
The total distance is about 38 miles. I'm wavering between renting a truck and calling in favors from friends and moving everything ourselves in one day or hiring a moving company to schlepp our stuff. (We'd pack everything ourselves. We just want to hire someone to load and unload the stuff.)

2. Vet in S. Tacoma area
We have two dogs and a cat.

3. Beer and coffee
Any nice pubs and coffeehouses we should know about?

4. Auto mechanic

Thanks for your help.
